It brings up a whole new definition of running afoul of both the law and the water.

Two men were approached by Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation officer at about 11 p.m. Dec. 27 in Sarasota Bay near Tidy Island.

The men took off, according to FWC reports, and one man tried to dump what was later determined to be an illegal fishing net overboard. However, the net became entangled in the boat’s propeller and their escape was thwarted.

The driver of the boat, Mark Douglas Mora, 50, of Holmes Beach, and passenger Patrick D. Cogan, 26, of Bradenton, were arrested.

Mara was charged with fleeing to elude a law enforcement vessel, possession of an unmarked net and obstruction. Cogan was charged with obstruction, possession of an unmarked net and littering.
