Jennifer Warren, an alert reader in Holmes Beach, caught this photo of Thursday's controlled burn on Egmont Key.

Callers to The Islander newspaper Thursday afternoon were relieved to learn that a raging fire on Egmont Key, visible we were told as far away as the Bradenton Financial Center in downtown Bradenton, was in fact a controlled burn.

Michael Brusso of Holmes Beach called from his 10th floor Morgan Stanley office with concerns for the environment on Egmont.

The fire was visible from many homes on the bayfront and north end of Anna Maria Island, causing concern for people and inquiries to the newspaper.

A quick call to the U.S. Coast Guard station in Cortez resulted in information that a controlled burn of approximately two acres was taking place at approximately 5 p.m. Thursday.

Controlled burns are somewhat routine, like performing wildfire maintenance, removing some low-level plants and controlling undergrowth.
