Pier restaurant reopening: Not before Christmas

It looks as if it will be at least Christmas before the Bradenton Beach City Pier restaurant reopens.

Public Works Director Dottie Poindexter told commissioners last week that the process she recommended to go out to bids for a new franchisee would take about three months. That time frame does not include consideration of any new or different use of the pier, she added.

The lengthy process, pursuant to state law, includes going out to bid, reviewing the bids, holding bid conferences and other elements according to the necessary criteria of the request for proposals.

City commissioners have referenced changing the restaurant layout in previous meetings. A "brainstorming" session is scheduled for 5 p.m. Oct. 7 by the commission to discuss plans for the operation.

City commissioners last month terminated the franchise agreement with Jake and Karen Gallo after hurricane damage to the roof forced the establishment to close. Repair work on the roof was approved by the city last week at a cost of $6,500, with the work scheduled to be completed in about a month.
