Center's preseason basketball tournament crowns four team champs

The Anna Maria Island Community Center's preseason youth basketball tourney concluded Wednesday, Dec. 8, culminating a week's worth of basketball action at the Center.
The tournament, which started play on Saturday, Dec. 4, serves as a nice precursor to the regular season and provides coaches a chance to experiment with different lineups and schemes that best fit each team's personnel.
Congratulations to all of the teams that participated and to the four champions. Anna Maria Glass & Screen captured the Premier League title, while Air & Energy rallied to claim the Division I title. Division II tournament winner was Steve Titsworth General Contracting, while Bistros took home the first place trophy for Division III.
Premier Division: AM Glass & Screen edges ReMax
Anna Maria Glass & Screen overcame the absence of big man David Scott on Monday, Dec. 6, to win the preseason tournament by a 51-47 score over ReMax Gulfstream Realty.
Guard David Buck spearheaded the victory with 22 points, while Zach Schields provided a much-needed inside presence with 11 points. Derrick Gargett and Eric Distelhurst chipped in with nine and eight points respectively. Matt McDonough finished with six points while teammates Chad Reed and Sarah Laneillo completed the scoring with two points apiece for the champs.
Spencer Carper scored 19 points and Pedro Alvarez added 11 points for ReMax in the four-point loss. Franklin Moore chipped in with nine points while Jordan Graeff scored six points and Kevin Gruenke finished with two points for ReMax.
ReMax 52, IRE 46
ReMax Gulfstream Realty prevailed over Island Real Estate on Saturday, Dec. 4, to advance to the Premier League title game in a battle of realtors. Spencer Carper scored 19 of his team-high 23 points in the second half to help ReMax overcome a four-point halftime deficit. Franklin Moore followed with 11 points including one three-point basket while Pedro Alvarez scored eight points and Luis Leon added six. Jordan Graeff and Kevin Gruenke completed the ReMax scoring with two points each in the victory.
Island Real Estate was led by Tyler Bekkerus who scored 24 points to lead all scorers in the six-point loss. Chad Richardson added 12 points for Island Real Estate who also received six points from Jamie Urch and two points apiece from Ian Douglas and Phelps Tracy.
Glass & Screen 55, West Coast AC 32
David Buck and David Scott scored 22 points apiece on Saturday, Dec. 4, to carry Anna Maria Island Glass & Screen into the Premier League title game. Matt McDonough added 11 points for Glass & Screen, which also received four points from Zach Schields in the victory.
Clay Orr's 20 points and 10 points from Brian Cziraky paced West Coast Air Conditioning in the loss. Dylan Mullen added eight points while Eric Fridenberg and Taylor Manning completed the scoring with seven points apiece.
Division I: A&E cools off Publix to claim crown
Air & Energy broke open a close game with a dominant third quarter to pull away from Publix for a 34-23 victory to claim the Division I tournament title Tuesday, Dec. 7.
Garrett Secor and Corbin Kitchen were a potent inside-outside combination. Secor dominated the low post, scoring 11 points and blocking or altering at least eight shot attempts by Publix players. Kitchen, who scored eight points, got the majority of his points in transition, usually the result of a steal or a quck outlet pass from Secor.
Other contributors were Will Osborne, who scored four points, and Chris Callahan, who finished with three points. Kyle Seawall, Jordan Sebastiano and Amanda White completed the scoring for Air & Energy with two points apiece in the victory.
Ben Valdivieso led all scorers with 12 points, while Publix point guard Justin Dearlove finished with six points. Egan Fridenberg and Brooke Fitzgerald each scored two points, while Donna Barth scored one point to complete the Publix scoring in the loss.
Air & Energy 36, LPAC 23
Air & Energy ran past Larry Pearson Air Conditioning 36-23 on Saturday, Dec. 4, to advance to the Division I tournament final behind 17 points from Corbin Kitchen and 11 points from Garrett Secor. Kevin Callahan added six points, while Chelsea Crowton completed the scoring with two points in the victory.
Matt Shafer and Whitney Bauer scored six points apiece to lead LPAC in the loss. Ryan Guerin added six points and Jarot Nelson scored five points for LPAC, which also received two points from Jason Rappe.
Publix 36, Longboat Observer 22
Ben Valdivieso poured in 16 points and Justin Dearlove scored nine points as Publix rolled past Longboat Observer on Saturday, Dec. 4, to advance to the Division I title game. Justin Dearlove added nine points for Publix, who also received four points from Breann Richardson, three points from Brooke Fitzgerald and two points each from Donna Barth and Egan Fridenberg in the victory.
Grant Lukitch led the Observer with 16 points, while Blake Wilson, Celia Ware and Daniel Riley added two points apiece in the loss.
Division II: STGC shuts down Oyster Bar
Steve Titsworth General Contracting employed a balanced scoring attack and played great team defense in its Dec. 8 victory over the Anna Maria Oyster Bar to claim the Division II tournament title. Ally Titsworth and Chandler McClung paced the winners with four points each, while Molly McDonough chipped in with three points. Trevor Bystrom's two points and one point from Emily White completed the scoring for the tourney winners.
The Oyster Bar was led by Sarah Howard, whose six points led all scorers, while Matt Bauer added four points. Blake Rivers completed the scoring for the Oyster Bar with two points in the loss.
STGC 28, Galati Marine 5
Molly McDonough was unstoppable for Steve Titsworth General Contracting in its tournament semifinal victory on Monday, Dec. 6, finishing with a game-high 14 points. McDonough received ample support from teammates Rachael White, who finished with six points and Chandler Hardy, who added four points. Trevor Bystrom and Kelly Guerin each added two points to the victory.
Martine Miller scored three points and Kayla Arritt added two points to lead Galati Marine in the loss.
Oyster Bar 18, Duncan 16
The Anna Maria Oyster Bar foreclosed on Duncan Real Estate behind 10 points from Matt Bauer in a two-point victory Monday, Dec. 6. Sarah Howard added four points, while Zach Evans and Blake Rivers chipped in with two points each in the victory.
Chris Callahan matched Bauer game-high total of 10 points, while Ashley Waring, Patrick Edwards and Kyle Crum added two points apiece in the loss.
Duncan 14, Danziger 12
Kyle Crum's overtime basket lifted Duncan Real Estate past Danziger Allergy & Sinus in Division II opening round action on Saturday, Dec. 4. Prior to Crum's basket, Chris Callahan scored all 12 points for Duncan.
Emma Barlow led a balanced Danziger attack with four points, while teammates Glenn Bower, Matt Danziger, Raphael Kasser and Dylan Riley each finished with two points in the loss.
Division III: Bistros edge Dips
Hailey Dearlove poured in 14 points on Wednesday, Dec. 8, to lead the Bistros to a two-point victory over Dips Ice Cream to claim the Division III tournament title.
Dearlove was supported by teammates Giorgio Gomez and Becca Butler, who each scored four points in the victory.
Dips was led by Justin Gargett's 14 points, while John Mattay, Zach Guerin and Jospeh Darke each finished with two points in the close defeat.
Dips 17, Harry's 2
Justin Gargett led a balanced scoring attack with seven points during Dips Ice Cream victory over Harry's Continental Kitchens on Saturday, Dec. 4. Zach Guerin added four points, while Jospeh Darke, Johnny Mattay and Jerry Meyer each scored two points in the victory.
Savannah Schield led Harry's with two points in the loss.
Bistros 23, Jessie's Island Store 18
Hailey Dearlove scored six of her game-high 16 points in overtime as the Bistros edged past Jessie's on Saturday, Dec. 4, to advance to the tournament final. Giorgio Gomez added four points for the Bistros, which also received three points from Emily Rappe in the victory.
Daniel Pimental scored seven points and Max Miller added four points to lead Jessie's in the tough loss. Jack Titsworth chipped in with three points for Jessie's, which also received two points apiece from Grant Bower and Jonah Castor.
Cheerleaders can still register
The Anna Maria Island Community Center's basketball season will start in early, which means that cheerleaders are sought to round out the B-ball competition.
