Boat fire injures Galati worker

A 25-year-old employee with Galati Marine in Anna Maria sustained burns to his arms, legs and face Jan. 30 when a flash fire occurred on a boat he was working on at the marina.

According to a report from the West Manatee Fire & Rescue, the incident took place around 9:40 a.m. The man was working in  a 52-foot charter Viking sportfishing yacht when a flash fire occurred. Matthew Slowen was flown by Bayflite helicopter to the burn unit at Tampa General Hospital where he was said to be improving from second-degree burns Monday.

There was minimal damage to the boat, the Jan Marie, which is captained by Glenn Corder of Holmes Beach. Corder said he'd be "out of work for awhile," but that he's usually "slow in the winter" and it won't be a problem.

The WMFR report said the incident appeared to be accidental, but was under investigation by the state fire marshall and WMFR.
