Coast Guard search for diver ends

A 12-hour search offshore of Anna Maria Island by the U.S. Coast Guard and other agencies for a missing diver was suspended shortly after 9:30 p.m. April 3.

Watch-standers at Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg received a call that Ron Wunderlich, 35,  of Sarasota, was missing at 9:48 a.m. April 3. It was reported he had been free-diving 28 miles west of Anna Maria Island in about 115 feet without an emergency breathing apparatus and had not returned to the surface.

A Coast Guard 41-foot rescue boat crew from Station Cortez and a Coast Guard HH-60 Jayhawk rescue helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater searched a 68-square mile area for Wunderlich.

Three Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission vessels and divers from Sarasota Police Department also assisted in the search.
