Patrol to check for waste in water

The Bradenton Beach Police Department will be patrolling its waters this month to monitor for improper waste disposal from boats.

The BBPD is partnering with the U.S. Coast Guard and the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office on the campaign, according to Chief Sam Speciale.

Speciale announced the patrol during a pier team meeting April 1 at Bradenton Beach City Hall.

The chief said BBPD received reports of some waste washing up on shore.

He said authorities want to determine whether waste is being dumped or leaked from boats.

“We’ll end up proving a point,” Speciale said.

Dave Russell of Rotten Ralph’s on the Pier restaurant said he appreciated the patrol. “It doesn’t do anything to increase appetites,” Russell said of the pollutant.

In other business at the meeting, city project/program manager Lisa Marie Phillips said a grant contract that would allow the city to move forward with establishing its mooring field soon would be presented to the city commission.

Phillips said a draft of the contract was received from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The FWC has awarded the city a $225,000 grant for the project.
