Privateers honor scholars

The Anna Maria Island Privateers awarded $29,500 in scholarships during the nonprofit’s Independence Day celebration July 3 at Cafe on the Beach.

        The scholarship party took place following the Privateer’s annual parade, which ran from Coquina Beach in Bradenton Beach to the city pier in Anna Maria.

        This year’s scholarship winners include:

        • Eric Whitley, $3,000, Whitey Horton scholar.

        • Chris Chawi, $2,500, Shipreck scholar.

        • Ashley Bishop, $2,500, Privateer scholar.

        • Claire Ingram, $2,000, Privateer scholar.

        • Ashley Stinton, $1,500, Privateer scholar.

        • Dominic Cox, $1,250, Privateer scholar.

        • Kayla Kerns, $1,250, Privateer scholar.

        • Samantha Glodde, $1,250, Privateer scholar.

        • Sarah Beth Scott, $1,250, Privateer scholar.

        • Kyle Messina, $1,250, Privateer scholar.

        • Sarah Norris, $1,250, Privateer scholar.

        The Privateers hold a series of fundraisers throughout the year to raise money for the scholarship fund, as well as other events to support Island youth.
