Final 4 set in center’s NFL adult flag football playoffs
The first round of playoffs in adult NFL Flag Football heated up Aug. 28 with four quarterfinal games at the Anna Maria Island Community Center.
There were no surprises though, as the second-fourth seeds survived, leaving the semifinals with the perfect No. 1 seed versus the fourth seed and two versus three matchups.
Slim’s Place, the league’s undefeated top seed, earned a bye into the semifinals to take on Beach to Bay Construction Broncos in the first game at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4. The second game has the No. 2 seed, The Feast Redskins, taking on third-seed Jessie’s Island Store Dolphins at 8 p.m.
Beach to Bay advanced Aug. 28 to the next round in arguably the best opening round playoff game. The team outscored Agnelli Pool & Spa Giants 46-34 behind a huge game from receiver KB Belton, who finished with 12 catches for 219 yards, including four touchdowns and two, 2-point conversions.
Quarterback Rob Manderine completed 16 of 25 passes for 189 yards and five touchdown passes. Shiante Moore added five catches for 65 yards and two touchdowns, while CJ Moore added 34 rushing yards, 19 receiving yards, including one touchdown catch, while also completing five passes for 114 yards and two touchdown passes.
Moore and Belton led the defense with five flag pulls in the victory with Belton also adding an interception.
Chuck Buky led Agnelli Pool & Spa on offense, completing 25 of 30 passes for 222 yards and five touchdown passes. Three touchdown passes went to Matt Kretzman, who finished with 13 catches for 182 yards, including an extra point. Frank Agnelli added three catches for 28 yards including two touchdowns and an extra point, while Scott Eason finished with five catches for 46 yards and an extra point.
The second game of the evening saw The Feast ease past Sato Real Estate by a 32-21 score behind the all-around play of Ray Gardner. Gardner lined up at quarterback to complete 17 of 20 passes for 94 yards and a touchdown. He carried the ball three times and finished with 58 yards rushing, including one for a touchdown. He also lined up at receiver where he caught two passes for 25 yards and a pair of touchdown receptions.
If that was not enough, Gardner also had an interception return for a touchdown on defense. Caleb Roberts also had a versatile game, completing four of five passes for 38 yards, including two touchdown passes. He Caught four passes for 23 yards, including a touchdown reception and a pair of extra points. Shay Coleman completed The Feast scoring with a touchdown reception.
Jason Sato threw for 267 yards and three touchdowns to lead Sato on offense. Chad Woods caught seven passes for 90 yards, while Eric Gledhill added six catches for 85 yards, including a touchdown and an extra point in the loss.
The last game of the evening saw Jessie’s Island Store roll to a 34-18 victory over Island Real Estate behind 250 passing yards and five touchdown passes from Ryan Moss. His favorite target was Jonathan Moss, who finished with eight catches for 128 yards, including two touchdowns and three extra points. Andy Szabo added three catches for 50 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while Jeff Walker also had three catches for 50 yards, including a touchdown and an extra point in the victory.
Jonathan Moss also added a pair of interceptions to key a strong defensive effort by Jessie’s.
IRE received 169 passing yards and three touchdown passes in the loss from quarterback Chris Gillum. Mike Gillum caught five passes for 74 yards and two touchdowns and Wayne Wickoff added five catches for 60 yards and a touchdown to lead IRE.
Indoor volleyball heads to playoffs
Florida Discount Signs won a pair of matches during Aug. 26 volleyball action in the Anna Maria Island Community Center gym to nail down top seed for the playoffs, which are set for Sept. 9.
FDS currently has a 7-3 match record, while Duncan Real Estate and Sugar Beach Digital are tied for second with matching 4-6 match records.
FDS defeated Duncan 25-22, 23-25 and 25-20 in the first match of Aug. 26. The second match of the evening saw Sugar Beach Digital sweep past Duncan 25-9, 25-20. The final match of the night saw Florida Discount Signs roll to a 25-13, 25-16 win over Sugar Beach.
Key Royale golf news
Debi Wohlers rode a birdie on the sixth hole to a 3-under-par 29 to gave her first place during Aug. 26 women’s golf action at the Key Royale Club. Joyce Brown was one shot behind Wohlers, alone in second place, while Jana Samuels’ 1-under-par 31 gave her third place on the day.
Samuels negotiated the nine Key Royale Club greens in only 13 putts to win low putts for the day. Janet Razze and Wohlers both finished with 15 total putts to tie for second place.
Two teams emerged from pool play during Aug. 27 horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits. The team of Sam Samuels and Tim Sofran rolled to a 21-7 victory over Steve Doyle to claim the day’s bragging rights.
Two teams also advanced to the knockout round during Aug. 30 horseshoe action. Doyle was back in the mix, teaming up with Hank Huyghe to earn a 21-10 victory over Dom Livedoti and Sofran and a trip to the winner’s circle.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m.
