Center crowns champions in youth soccer league
Two champions were crowned Nov. 10 as the fall Anna Maria Island Community Center Youth Soccer League closed another season of kicks.
The first championship game saw Anna Maria Donuts edge Miller Electric by a 2-1 score. As he has all fall, Anthony Monetti carried the offensive load. Monetti scored both goals to lead the top seeds to victory.
Miller Electric, which entered the playoffs as the No. 3 seed, was led in the loss by Gavin Johnston, who scored the lone goal.
The Donuts advanced to the finals by rolling past Gulf-Bay Realty by a 5-1 score in the Oct. 27 semifinal match. Thomas Heckler paced the Donutmakers with two goals, while Monetti, Michael Pears and Noah Wampole each notched goals in the victory.
Madlyn Rogers scored the lone goal for Gulf-Bay Realty.
Miller Electric then edged Tyler’s Ice Cream 4-3 in the second semifinal match. Ozzy Lonzo scored two goals to lead Miller, which also received a goal each from Gavin Johnston and Max Higgins for the victory.
Ava Alderson scored two goals and Lance Valadie added one goal in the loss for Tyler’s.
Smile Deep defeated Sugar Beach Digital 3-1 on Nov. 10 to win the 11-13 division championship. Zach Fernandes scored three goals to lead the way for Smile Deep, which came into the playoffs as the top seed.
Third-seed Sugar Beach Digital was led by Daniel Sentman, who scored Sugar’s only goal in the loss.
Smile Deep advanced to the finals by defeating the Feast Restaurant 3-0 behind two goals from Fernandes and one goal from Ava Zink. Sugar Beach Digital and Jen Crady Massage battled to a 4-4 tie in regulation and their game was decided in penalty kicks.
Adult soccer rolls on
There was a full night of adult soccer action in the past week at the Anna Maria Island Community Center.
The playoffs will get started Thursday, Nov. 20, and culminate with the Island Cup Dec. 4. Stay tuned to The Islander for the results.
Nov. 13 action started with Eason Builders taking a 3-1 victory over Sato Real Estate behind a goal each from Matt Plummer, Jeff Walker and Nate Coleman. Chris Klotz added a pair of assists, while Wes Robinson made eight saves in goal.
Damir Glavan scored the lone goal for Sato.
Jessie’s Island Store edged Slim’s Place 4-3 in the second game behind two goals and an assist from Holly Belton and two goals from Jeff Gonzalez.
Rico Beissert led Slim’s Place with two goals and an assist, while Gabby Westerman scored one goal in the loss.
In the third match of the night, Wash Family Construction rolled to a 5-2 victory over Beacon Designs behind two goals and two assists from Aaron Parkin. Austin Wash chipped in with two goals, while Ray Gardner scored one goal and made 14 saves in goal.
Omar Polar tallied two goals and Jordan Demers made eight saves to lead Beacon Designs in the loss.
The final game of the evening saw Dojo Martial Arts edge Island Pest Control by a 2-1 score. Chris Circharo and Shay Coleman scored one goal each and Adam Mott made six saves in the victory.
Chris Yavalar scored the lone goal for Island Pest.
Horseshoe news
Two teams advanced to the knockout stage during Nov. 12 horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits. The team of Bob Palmer and Karl Thomas outlasted Sam Samuels and John Crawford 23-18 in the championship match.
Two teams also advanced to the knockout round Nov. 15. John Crawford and Sam Samuels were teammates once again and again found themselves in the finals. This time, Crawford-Samuels came out on top, defeating Bob Palmer and Tom Skoloda 23-19 to earn bragging rights.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m.
Clubhouse news
To celebrate Veteran’s Day, the women of Key Royale Club played a Red-White-and-Blue Game Nov. 11. They teed off three times each from the red, white and blue tee markers during their nine-hole round.
Joy Kaiser won Flight A with a low gross of 41, while Tootie Wagner was alone in second place with a 42 that included a birdie on the second hole. Helen Pollock and Brenda Solleveld finished in a tie for third with matching 43s.
Pam Alvord and Barb Harrold tied for first place in Flight B with 43 strokes. Sue Wheeler and Meredith Slavin finished in a tie for second with 45s while Sue Christianson took third place with a 47.
Joyce Lathrop’s 43 gave her first place in Flight C, three shots ahead of second-place finisher Jan Turner. Kathy Porter was another shot back in third.
Markie Ksiazek fired a 50 to take first place in Flight D, while Kathy Miller took second place.
Winter sports on tap
Youth registration for flag football at the center continues until Nov. 25. The cost is $75 for members and $105 for non-members. If space allows, late registrations will be accepted, but a late fee applies. Games will be played Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays beginning in January.
Tryouts begin Monday, Dec. 1, for ages 5-7 age at 6 p.m. followed by the 11-13 age division at 7:30 p.m. On Friday, Dec. 5, the 8-10 age division tryout is at 6 p.m. followed by age 14-17 players at 8 p.m.
Registration for adult flag football and volleyball also is ongoing. Cost for both leagues is $75 for center members and $110 for non-members. To avoid a late fee, register before Dec. 2.
Tryouts for adult flag football will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 8. Games will be played on Wednesdays for the 18 and up league and Thursday evenings for the 30 and up league beginning Jan. 2015..
Adult volleyball tryouts will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, in the center gym. Games will be played on Tuesday nights beginning in January.
Tryouts for all sports are mandatory, with teams selection immediately following. Players who sign up for both football and volleyball and receive a $25 discount.
Coaches, captains and sponsors are needed. Any youth head coach will receive free play for their children.

Center expands hours
The Anna Maria Island Community Center, 407 Magnolia Ave., Anna Maria, announced this week that it is expanding its activities and operating hours to satisfy requests from its members.
Starting this Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 22-23, the center will open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturdays, and noon-4 p.m. Sundays. For information, call 941-778-1908.
