Basketball league gets underway at community center
Youth basketball is underway at the Anna Maria Island Community Center Monday-Friday evenings, along with an occasional Saturday matchup.
The action got started May 11 with an 11-13 division game pitting Simpson against Laade. Laade came out on top, edging Simpson 10-9 behind 5 points and seven rebounds from Alex Rodriguez and 2 points each from Daniel Sentman and Connor Ludwig.
Hannah McCracken led Simpson with 4 points and nine rebounds, while Tuna McCracken and Tyler Brewer added 2 points each in the loss.
The second game of the evening saw Gardner defeat Gilman 43-37 behind a game-high 20 points from Burke Hill and 12 points from Trent Boring. Jake Parsons added 7 points and 15 rebounds for the win.
Josh Zajistoki led Gilman with 12 points, while Lucas Paquin and Neil Carper finished with 9 points each. Paquin grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
Calvary defeated Island Real Estate 10-8 in 8-10 division action May 14. Sam Wright led the way for Calvary with 6 points, while Fiona Turner-Leatham added 4 points in the victory.
Anthony Negrin, Michael Coleman, Nick Yatros and Dante Tilelli scored 2 points each for Island Real Estate in the loss.
Andrew Proctor scored 14 points to lead Gardner to a 27-18 victory over Laade during action in the 11-13 division May 14. Julius Peteriet added 6 points, while Jack Groves finished with 4 points.
Shawn Balvin’s 7 points and 6 points from Alex Rodriguez paced Laade, which also received 4 points from Joey Mannino in the loss.
Horseshoe news
Two teams emerged from pool play during May 13 action at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits. The team of Tim Sofran and Dave Hennessey earned a come-from-behind 22-19 victory over Jay Disbrow and Steve Doyle for a trip to the winner’s circle.
May 16 action saw two teams advance to the knockout stage. The team of Sam Samuels and Tom Skoloda jumped out to an early lead and held on for a 21-15 victory over Hank Huyghe and Bob Heiger.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. Everyone is welcome to play.
Key Royale golf news
The men of Key Royale Club took the course early May 11 for a nine-hole, two-best-balls-of-foursome match.
The team of Matt Behan, Bill Gallagher, Dan Hayes and Lance Lindeman torched the course and took first place with a 19-under-par 45.
Later in the day, the men returned for a nine-hole, modified-Stableford System or quota-points game. Gary Alford, Bill Koche and Alex Gunn each finished at plus-5 to finish tied for individual honors.
Gunn’s plus-5 score helped teammates Art McMillan, Scott Mitchell and Tom Nelson to a plus-7 score and first place in the team competition.
The women rolled out May 12 for a nine-hole individual-low-net match with a side game that scored holes beginning with “F” and “T.”
Pam Lowry carded a 10-under-par 22 to take first place in Flight A by two strokes over Helen Pollock, who finished at 8-under-par 24.
Marcia O’Brien’s 6-under-par 26 gave her first place in Flight B, with Terry Westby one shot back in second.
Laura Purcell won the game of the day for Flight A with a score of 15. O’Brien took first place for the game of the day in Flight B with a 20.
Liz Lang, Lowry and Purcell each birdied number seven, while Fran Barford, Sally Martin and Terry Westby had chipins.
The men returned May 14 for a nine-hole scramble. The team of Gunn, Bill Lowman, Bill MacMillan and Quentin Talbert combined on an 8-under-par 24 to match the team score and tie for first with Gerry Dahl, Jon Holcomb, Barry Izzard and Hoyt Miller.
Manatee Magic soccer program hosts tryouts
It’s try-out time for the 2015-16 Manatee Magic competitive league.
Manatee Magic’s U14 boys, U15 girls, U13 girls and U13 boys all advanced to the semi-finals of this year’s Florida Youth Soccer Association. Region C Tournament, where the U13 boy’s finished second overall. The “magic” U11 girls, U12 boys and U13 boys teams won their respective age divisions.
All Manatee Magic coaches are licensed and the club provides licensed trainers to further develop players for future competitive play.
Player tryouts — boys and girls teams — will be held at G.T. Bray Park, 5502 33rd Ave. Drive W., Bradenton, as follows:
