Center adult football playoffs underway

The adult flag football league playoffs got started Oct. 20 at the Center of Anna Maria Island with four quarterfinal games played. The teams are fighting to secure a spot in the Super Bowl, which is scheduled for 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, following a pair of semifinal games that get started at 6 p.m.

The playoff action began with a slight upset by fifth-seeded Tyler’s Ice Cream. Tyler’s edged No. 4 seed Coldwell Banker in a close 29-28 score behind three touchdown passes and 115 passing yards from quarterback Jason Sato. Brother Josh Sato also played a hand in the victory, finishing with one touchdown pass to go along with 80 rushing yards and a touchdown, 55 receiving yards and three touchdown catches, all in addition to a 2-point conversion.

Younger brother Nick Sato completed the scoring with one touchdown reception to go along with 3 extra points and 65 receiving yards.

Chuck Buky paced Coldwell Banker with 245 passing yards and three touchdown passes, but was hurt by two interceptions. Karri Stephens finished with 110 receiving yards, inclduing a touchdown and a 2-point conversion to go along with four flag pulls, a quarterback sack and an interception return for a touchdown on defense. Matt Morgan completed the Coldwell Banker scoring with two touchdowns and a pair of extra points to go with 90 receiving yards.

The second game of the evening saw second-seed Mason Martin Construction roll to an 18-9 victory over Blake Medical Center behind the running and passing by quarterback Ray Gardner. Gardner rushed for 175 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while also passing for 75 yards and a touchdown. Frank Agnelli completed the scoring with a touchdown reception in the victory.

Blake could only manage one touchdown on a completion from Chase Bennion to Chris McCorkle, who finished with 85 receiving yards and an extra point. Aaron VanHook completed the scoring in the loss with a quarterback sack for a safety.

Sixth-seed Moss Builders pulled off the big upset of the night by rolling to a 26-8 victory over No. 3 Beach House Real Estate behind 205 passing yards and three touchdown passes from quarterback Ryan Moss. Andrew Terman also had a huge game, finishing with 115 receiving yards, including a pair of touchdowns and two extra points. Terman also came through on defense with a pair of interceptions, including a return for a touchdown. Chad Woods completed the scoring in the victory with a touchdown reception to go along with 80 receiving yards.

Don Purvis led Beach House with 160 passing yards and a touchdown pass, but was hurt by two interceptions. Jon Moss led Beach House receivers with 140 yards and a touchdown in the loss.

The final game of the evening saw top-seed Progressive Cabinetry roll to a 25-15 victory over Anna Maria CrossFit. Quarterback Tim Shaughnessy passed for 85 yards and three touchdown passes, while also adding 95 rushing yards. Caleb Roberts added 140 all-purpose yards, including a pair of touchdown receptions and an extra point, while also chipping in an interception return for a touchdown on defense. Christina Calvary completed the Progressive scoring with a touchdown reception.

Quarterback Danny Murphy paced CrossFit with a strong all-around game that included 160 passing yards and a touchdown pass, 50 rushing yards and 30 receiving yards, including one for a touchdown to go along with two quarterback sacks — one for a safety. Sean Flynn had a 30-yard touchdown pass and finished with 50 receiving yards and a touchdown in the loss to complete the scoring.

 

Youth soccer gets rolling

Youth soccer at the Center of Anna Maria Island moved into its second week of action with a bevy of games. The 6-7 division has Air & Energy atop the standings with a 2-0 record, closely followed by Bin There Dumped That and Signarama which both sit at 1-1. Blalock Walters completes the standings after two weeks of action at 0-2.

The 8-10 division is a picture of parity. Bins Be Clean, Cloud Pest Control, Gulf-Bay Realty and Mason Martin Construction all sit at 1-1 and all games have been decided by one goal.

The 11-14 division has Planet Stone leading with a 1-0 record, followed by 1-1 Tyler’s Ice Cream and 0-1 Progressive Cabinetry.

Tyler’s Ice Cream defeated Progressive Cabinetry 4-2 in 11-14 division action on Oct. 19 to win their first game on the young season behind four goals from Tyler Brewer and six saves from goalie Thomas Heckler.

Christian DeWitt and Tuna McCracken scored one goal each, while McCracken made eight saves between the pipes in the loss.

Cloud Pest Control opened 8-10 division action on Oct. 18 with a 2-1 victory over Mason Martin Builders behind a pair of goals from Aiden Templeton. Connor Allen helped preserve the victory with three saves in goal.

Mason Agnelli notched the lone goal for Mason Martin in the loss.

Gulf-Bay Realty earned a 4-3 victory over Bins Be Clean in the second 8-10 match of the evening behind three goals from Gregory Jordan and a goal from Sam Leister. Lily Kawahata made three saves in goal to help preserve the one-goal advantage.

Riley Lawson scored all three goals for Bins Be Clean, which received five saves in the loss from Nick Yatros.

Air & Energy opened the 6-7 division action Oct. 17 with a 2-1 victory over Bin There Dumped That behind two goals from Charley Rogers and a pair of saves from Gigi Greene.

Ewan Cloutier notched the lone goal for Bin There, while Brady Thompson had three saves in the loss.

Signarama rolled to a 3-0 victory over Blalock Walters behind a goal each from Alex Cox, Anthony Dunfee and Connor Sambis. Goalie Bert Vortuba made five saves in the shutout victory.

The action takes place Monday through Wednesday evenings on the center field, 407 Magnolia Ave., Anna Maria, so don’t miss out.

 

Key Royale golf news

Nearly 48 golfers turned out Oct. 15 for the Key Royale Club Oktoberfest Scramble. The team of Debi Wohlers, Lori Waggoner, Carol Patterson and Wayne Patterson combined on a 3-under-par 29 to grab clubhouse bragging rights. Second place went to the team of Helen Pollock, Al Pollock, Marie Schultz and Joe Schultz with a 2-under -par 30.

Joe Schultz won the men’s long-drive contest, while Debi Wohlers captured the contest among the women golfers.

Judy Hutton won the closest-to-the-pin contest on the eighth hole, while Jack Isherwood won for the men.

The men were back on the course for a pair of matches Oct. 17. They played a best-ball-of-twosome match in the morning, which saw Tom Lewis and Peter Proxy combine on a 7-under-par 25 for first place by five strokes. The team of Jim Thorton and George Barford came in second place at 2-under-par 30.

Later in the day, the men were back out for a nine-hole modified Stableford System match. The team of Gary Razze, Wayne Patterson, Larry Solberg and Bill Shuman combined on a plus-3 to take the team title.

Bob Leedham carded a plus-4 to win the individual title, one point ahead of Shuman’s plus-3.

The Key Royale women got on the course Oct. 19 for a nine-hole blue-green-and-gold game. They teed off for three holes on each tee color, scoring a low-net match in two flights.

Phyllis Roe and Carol Patterson both carded 1-under-par 31s to tie for first place in Flight A. Debi Wohlers and Jean Holmes were a stroke back in second place.

Debbie Richardson’s 1-under-par 31 gave her first place in Flight B by one stroke over Fran Barford. Terry Westby was alone in third place with a 1-over-par 33.

The men played a nine-hole scramble Oct. 20 that saw the team of Rollin Cutter, Dale Hudson, Jack Isherwood and Gary Razze combine on a 4-under-par 28 to grab a one-stroke victory over the second-place team of Bill MacMillan, Dan Richardson, Bob Soos and Ron Vandeman.

 

Horseshoe news

Horseshoe action Oct. 19 at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits saw six teams advance to the knockout stage with matching 2-1 pool-play records. Dom “Dominator” Livedoti walked past Steve Doyle and Karl Thomas by a 23-4 score, while Neil Hennessey and Norm Langland rolled to a 21-5 victory over Roger Nigg and Tim Sofran. Hank Huyghe and Bob Rowley also advanced on a 22-12 victory over Norm Good.

Huyghe and Rowley drew the bye into the finals and watched as Livedoti advanced with a 24-2 victory over Hennessey and Langland. Livedoti kept his hot streak alive with a 23-14 victory to earn yet another trip to the winner’s circle

Two teams posted 3-0 pool play records during Oct. 22 action as Livedoti made it eight in a row, this time teaming with Gary Howcroft to defeat Steve Doyle by a 23-14 margin.

Play gets underway at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. followed by random team selection. There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.

 

Ugly Grouper cornhole action

Week seven of the Ugly Grouper cornhole league, located at 5704 Marina Dr. in Holmes Beach resumed and Amateur Corn Stars continue to lead the pack with a perfect 7-0 record after dispatching The Feast, The Duckand the Corn by a 2-0 score. Captain Morgan Charters fell to 5-2 after dropping a 2-0 decision to Bag em and Tag em which improved to 5-2.

AMI Car Wash, Ugly Grouper Toss Me Softly and General Store are all 5-2 after last week’s action while Island Coffee Haus HB and Corn Dawgs follow in the standings at 4-3. Def Con 5 and Island Coffee Haus AMI are 3-4 and Island Bazaar Beach Bums is alone in tenth place at 2-5. Corn Dawgs and Island Coffee Haus are 1-6 while The Feast, The Duck and the Corn remain winless at 0-7.

 

Center offers wrestling program

A Center Wrestling Club is reaching out to interested youth ages 5-13 on Anna Maria Island. The club will travel in the area to weekend tournaments.

The season starts Nov. 9 and costs $5 for members and $90 for non-members. The last day to register is Oct. 28.
