Planet Stone, Bins Be Clean celebrate division soccer titles

The top seeds in the youth soccer league at the Center of Anna Maria island lived up to their regular-season billing. Planet Stone captured the 11-14 division championship and Bins Be Clean topped the 8-10 division during championship night Nov. 29 at the center, 407 Magnolia Ave., Anna Maria.

Planet Stone outlasted Progressive Cabinetry 6-5 in an exciting back-and-forth game. The Planet led 3-2 after the first half on three goals from Chris Snyder, while Progressive Cabinetry received a goal each from David Daigle and Tuna McCracken.

Progressive tied the score at 3-3 early in the second half when McCracken hit a long clearing pass that found Nicholas DeWitt, who finished the scoring chance.

A few minutes later, Progressive took a 4-3 lead on some nice passes between Daigle and DeWitt that resulted in a pass inside to Connor Ludwig and a goal.

The lead was shortlived, however, as Planet Stone’s Jack Barnes got loose up the right side and crossed it inside to Snyder, who deposited into the goal to tie the score at 4-4.

With 8:14 remaining to be played, Bryce Higgins somehow fought his way through two Progressive defenders to score and give Planet Stone a 5-4 lead.

Three minutes later, Planet Stone earned a corner kick that Nick Cavaluzzi hammered toward the goal mouth as it caromed off the goalie and into the goal for a 6-4 Planet Stone lead.

Undaunted, Progressive Cabinetry continued to fight and with just over 3 minutes left to play, a long goal kick found its way to Daigle, who ripped a shot from the 18 yard line that found the back of the net to cut the deficit to 6-5.

Daigle almost tied the score in the final minute of play, when his shot from 25 yards hit the left post and bounced to Nicholas DeWitt. However, DeWitt’s shot was saved by Snyder in goal to preserve the victory for Planet Stone.

Snyder finished with a game-high four goals and a pair of saves, while Cavaluzzi and Higgins each added a goal.

Daigle’s two goals led Progressive Cabinetry, which also received a goal each from DeWitt, McCracken and Ludwig in the loss.

Progressive Cabinetry advanced to the title game by defeating Tyler’s Ice Cream 6-3 Nov. 28 in the semifinal match. Daigle and Nicholas DeWitt scored two goals each to lead Progressive, which also received a goal from Christian DeWitt in the victory.

Tyler Brewer scored three goals to lead Tyler’s Ice Cream in the loss.

The 8-10 division championship game saw Bins Be Clean ease past Gulf-Bay Realty behind a pair of goals from Riley Lawson. Bins Be Clean goalie Evan Talucci, who made nine saves, came up with a big save on a Gulf-Bay penalty kick with just over 6 minutes to play to preserve his team’s two-goal advantage.

Gulf-Bay advanced to the finals by upsetting Mason Martin Builders 5-3 during semifinal action Nov. 28. Sam Leister scored two goals, while Gregory Jordan, Juliet Greene and Elek Brisson each scored a goal in the victory.

Mason Agnelli scored two goals and Jiles Kirkland added a goal to lead Mason Martin Builders in the loss.

Bins Be Clean advanced to the finals by rolling past Cloud Pest Control 6-2 in the second semifinal match of the evening. Riley Lawson scored five goals and Maddox Culhane added a goal to lead the Bins in the victory.

Aiden Templeton led Cloud Pest Control with two goals in the loss.

On another center note: The youth football league registration will close Dec. 9. Tryouts are Dec. 12-14 and play starts in January.
