2 champs crowned, 1 title game to be played

The 11-13 playoffs March 15 for the youth flag football playoffs at the Center of Anna Maria Island had the seedings correct with No. 2 Planet Stone taking on top-seed Miller Electric.

Miller Electric edged Tyler’s Ice Cream 20-18 to advance to the championship game, while Planet Stone rolled to a 53-28 victory over Progressive Cabinetry in the other semifinal game.

The finals saw Planet Stone edge Miller Electric 19-12 to win the 11-13 championship game.

The 14-17 championship game March 15 saw Intechgrate Systems live up to its top seed and record a 24-15 victory over Air & Energy.

Weather and other events resulted in last-minute schedule changes and postponements in the 8-10 division. The 8-10 division semifinal and championship games were delayed to March 27.

 

Adult flag football update

Week four of the adult flag football league at the center, 407 Magnolia Ave., Anna Maria, saw Beach House Real Estate continue its chase of an unbeaten record by rolling to a 35-6 victory over Smoothie King to close out action on March 16.

The loss dropped Smoothie King to 1-4 and sixth place in the standings.

Mason Martin Construction cruised past winless Progressive Cabinetry 47-13 to climb into a tie for second place with idle Tyler’s Ice Cream and improve to 3-1 on the season.

Beach to Bay Construction fell to  2-2 after dropping a 27-19 decision to Moss Builders. Moss Builders improved to 2-3 on the season.

 

Key Royale hits the links

The Key Royale Club men played a nine-hole,  modified-Stableford system or quota-points match March 13.

Wayne Patterson carded a plus-5 to win individual honors and the accompanying clubhouse bragging rights. John Estok was alone in second place at plus-4.

Estok and Patterson teamed up, along with Fred Miller and Paul Proxy, to win the team title as well with a score of plus-5.

The men were back on the course March 16 for a nine-hole scramble.

The team of Peter Lund, Wayne Patterson, Frank Purritano and Dave Richardson matched the score of Gerry Elson, Peter Fischer, Dick Mills and Bill Shuman, which match the score of Fred Miller, Scott Mitchell, Larry Pippel and Peter Proxy.

All three teams carded 4-under-par 28s to finish in a three-way tie for first place.

 

Horseshoe news

Two teams posted 3-0 records during March 15 horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits and were left to battle for the day’s supremacy.

The team of Steve Hooper and Tom Farrington outlasted Bob Heiger and Sam Samuels 25-17 to earn a trip to the winner’s circle.

March 18 action saw four teams advance to the knock out stage. In the first semifinal match, John Crawford and Norm Langeland eased past Gene Bobeldyk and Samuels 22-15 while Jim Waller and Adin Shank took out Gene Fehl and Bob Lee by a 22-5 score. Crawford and Langeland rolled to a 22-8 victory in the finals to earn the day’s bragging rights.

 

Register now for youth soccer

The Center of Anna Maria Island is accepting registrations for the spring youth soccer league until Saturday, March 25.

Cost for the spring season is $5 for members and $120 for non-members.

The season will start April 8 and all games will be played on Saturdays.

Player evaluations are scheduled for the week of March 26 and are as follows. An exception is the 3-5 years, who have weekly clinics and games, but no evaluations.

  • March 27, 6 p.m., ages 6-7.
  • March 27, 7 p.m., ages 8-10.
  • March 28, 6 p.m., ages 11-13.
  • March 28, 7 p.m., ages 14-17.

The center also is looking for volunteers coaches and team sponsors.
