Fireworks task force to use stuffers, announcements

The Island fireworks task force headed by Anna Maria Mayor Fran Barford plans to educate the public about local ordinances prohibiting the unauthorized use of fireworks, particularly during public holidays such as July 4.

The committee is attempting to organize a “mail stuffer” campaign that would place a brochure in Manatee County utility bills for June advising customers about the ordinance, including the discharge of fireworks outdoors without a permit.

In conjunction with the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, the committee will prepare a public service announcement to air on local television stations prior to the 2008 summer holidays.

The first announcement will air prior to Memorial Day in May, while most will be shown just before the July 4 holiday, which this year is on a Friday.

Barford said the task force will also give presentations in area schools and contact Island rental agents to advise renters about the dangers of fireworks and the fact that personal fireworks are illegal.
