Holmes Beach officer injured in shooting

An off-duty Holmes Beach police officer suffered a minor fragment wound during a shooting near his home in east Manatee County.

The incident began at about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 4, in the 2000 block of 26th Avenue E.

Police officer James Cumston saw a burglary taking place at his neighbor’s home, according to a report from the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.

Two burglary suspects took off in a car, with Cumston following in his car. The officer called 911 and continued his pursuit.

In the 3500 block of 27th Street Court East, the suspects began firing at Cumston. They fired again near the intersection of 27th Street East and 36th Avenue East.

In the 3200 block of 27th Street East, the suspects fired again at Cumston, who then fired back.The sheriff’s office said Cumston lost the suspects in the area of 36th Avenue East and 17th Street East.

The officer suffered a minor wound to his leg. It is not known whether the suspects, described as males in their late teens or early 20s, suffered any injuries.

Authorities found the suspects car later in the day, a dark Dodge Neon with Florida tag number X439WR. The suspects, remained at large.
