A man was evacuated by medical helicopter to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg in stable condition following a two-car crash in Bradenton Beach May 9.

A second person was taken by ambulance to Blake Medical Center in Bradenton with minor injuries.

Authorities, at Islander press time, had completed a report but identified the man taken to Bayfront as Charles Custer of Phoenix.

The accident occurred at about 4:30 p.m. at the intersection of Gulf Drive and Cortez Road.

Police said a red Ford F-250 pickup truck traveling north on Gulf Drive ran a red light and hit a blue Pontiac sedan turning left from southbound Gulf Drive on Cortez Road.

The impact of the crash pushed the Pontiac around until it rested, facing northward, on the sidewalk on the east side of Gulf Drive.

The windshield of the Pontiac, which had Arizona license plates, was shattered, the front doors pressed inward and the hood crumpled.

The pickup truck suffered front-end damage and a boat hitched to the truck rammed into the back of the vehicle.

Debris from the vehicles was scattered in the road and two signs were felled.

Emergency personnel responding to the scene included Bradenton Beach and Holmes Beach police officers, Manatee County Sheriff’s Office deputies, West Manatee Fire Rescue firefighters, Manatee County Emergency Medical Service paramedics and Bayflite attendants.

Police closed a section of Gulf Drive north of Cortez Road for about 30 minutes following the accident.

The Bayflite helicopter circled the area three times before landing on the beachfront on a concrete pad at the former Trader Jack’s restaurant just south of the Gulf Drive Cafe.
