Massachusetts visitor Larry Livrago and long-time Anna Maria resident and city public works director George McKay thrashed a pair of playoff teams to win the Aug. 11 horseshoe competition at the Anna Maria City Hall pits.
Livrago was hot as he and McKay ran roughshod over John Johnson and this writer/horseshoe wannabe by a 21-6 score in the semifinal match. The final match was a carbon copy as the winning duo thrashed the team of Ron Pepka and Hank Huyghe by a 21-5 score.
This writer thoroughly enjoyed the morning’s action as everyone who participated made sure to say hello, despite not learning my secret identity (Islander sports writer/photographer) until late in the proceedings. They were, of course, my best friends when they found out I had a camera!
At the end of the day, I was happy to have not embarrassed myself as partner John Johnson and I defeated three quality teams in pool play to advance to the elimination round.
A big thanks to all in attendance for their hospitality and a fun Saturday morning.
In other horseshoe action, Jay Disbrow and Steve Doyle were the only team to post a perfect 3-0 record and, thus, were the undisputed champions during Aug. 8 horseshoe action.
Disbrow also figured in the winning team on Aug. 4 when he teamed up with Larry Livrago to post the only undefeated pool-play record to win the day’s proceedings. The winners threw an impressive five “six packs” as they crushed all comers.
Play gets under way at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. followed by random team selection. There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.
Key Royale golf news
The Key Royale Club men played a pair of “better ball” games during golf action last week. On Aug. 6, they played a nine-hole, better-ball-of-foursome tournament, which was a tie for first by the teams of John Atkinson, Chris Collins, Gerry Slavin and Tom Fin who, along with the team of Richard Westby, Charlie Knopp, Matt Behan and Russ Olson fired a 7-under-par 25.
The Aug. 8 contest was a better-ball-of-partners tournament that saw the team of John Heiselman and Al Morgan fire a 7-under-par 57 to finish three shots ahead of Bob Jorgensen and Don Ledfor, who were at 4-under 60. |
