Joanne (Cotte) Blourne
Joanne (Cotte) Blourne, 75, of Bradenton, died May 10. She was born July 13, 1936 in Claremont, N.H.
Mrs. Blourne came to Holmes Beach in 1973 and worked at Webbs Drug Store, Eckerd and CVS/Pharmacy for 26 years as a cosmetician.

Mrs. Blourne is survived by daughter Diane Colmorgen of Bradenton; granddaughter Alexis; and great-granddaughter Mia.
Michael Wesley Nelson
Michael Wesley Nelson, 51, of Bradenton Beach, died May 14. He was born November 15, 1960, in McMinnville, Tenn. He was raised in Painsville, Ohio, and graduated Riverside High School in 1979.
Mr. Nelson worked for Weller Roofing for the past 20 years. He was an avid fisherman and loved the water.
A celebration of life will be planned at a later date.
Mr. Nelson is survived by his daughter Megan; granddaughters Alexis Marie & Shianne Faith; mother Emma Jean; father Wesley; sister Brenda Norris; nephew Tyson Norris; niece Heather Johnson; four grand nieces and nephews; his dog Lovey; and former wife Chris.

Marilyn Jean Bradow
Marilyn Jean Bradow, 84, of Bradenton, died May 5. She was born in Hinsdale, Ill., and moved to Bradenton in 1957 from La Range, Ill.
Mrs. Bradow was a Lutheran.

Mrs. Bradow is survived by sons Lance of Coleman, Ala., Stuart of Deltona, Fla., and Mark of Bradenton; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Derek Freno, 28, died April 29. He was a long-time resident of Bradenton, and formerly lived on Anna Maria Island. He was born April 6, 1984, in Wheeling, W.Va.
He loved animals, enjoyed fishing and was an avid Miami Dolphin fan.
A service was held in Bellaire, Ohio, May 3, and a a memorial service will be held at a later date in Bradenton for family and friends
Mr. Freno is survived by his mother, Kelly Dobbins Freno of Bradenton; father, Don and wife Mitzie of Ohio; brothers Dustin and Dylan Dobbins; stepbrother Randy Ramsey, stepsisters Denise Ramsey and Tammi Warner of Ohio, and Michelle Trinkeller of North Carolina; and many aunts, uncles, neices, nephews and cousins.
Alma ‘Amy’ Kennedy Hook
Alma “Amy” Kennedy Hook died Nov. 29, 2011, in Houston. She was born Oct. 1, 1922, in St. Alban’s, W.Va.
Mrs. Hook spent her retirement years in Bradenton with her husband, Ted. Her many interests included golf, Methodist Womens church circle, AAUW, and volunteer work at the Island Branch Library.
A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 24, with a reception to follow at Faith United Methodist Church, 7215 First Ave. W., Bradenton.
Maynard V. Pinkham
Maynard V. Pinkham, 71, of Anna Maria, died May 12. He was born June 8, 1941, in Village of Freeport, N.Y.
Mr. Pinkham served two years in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany. As a young man, he worked in the resort industry and managed a hotel in Great Exuma, Bahamas.
He was a union carpenter and master craftsman for 21 years, and was in charge of construction for Harrah’s Hotel and Casino in South Lake Tahoe. He was president of the South Tahoe Swim Team for several years and enjoyed traveling and officiating at the swim meets. After retiring to Anna Maria 15 years ago, his hobbies included building furniture, fishing, boating and driving his yellow Corvette.
A service will be held in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, at a later date. A celebration of life will be held at 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 16, at Roser Memorial Church Church with a reception immediately following. Mr. Pinkham is survived by his wife of 44 years, Linda; son Brett of Anna Maria, daughter Heather Nyberg of Bradenton; sister Janice Raymond of California; grandchildren Alyssa Bosch, Amanda Bosch and Andrew, all of Bradenton, and Adam Zell of Las Vegas; and many nieces and nephews.
Antoinette Scanio
Antoinette Scanio, 97, died May 11 in her home surrounded by family. She was born March 9, 1915, in Tampa, and moved to Anna Maria Island in 1946, where she co-founded the IGA Grocery Store in Anna Maria.
Mrs. Scanio was a member of the Roser Memorial Community Church.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 19, at the Roser Memorial Chapel.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Anna Maria Island Community Center and Tidewell Hospice.
She is survived by daughters Rosemary and husband Roy Griscom and Marie and husband Norman Franklin; grandchildren Dawn Bates and Dina Franklin; and great- grandchildren Johnathon, Tiffany, Tyler and Travis.
Wilson Shymanski
Surfing shaped his life.
Wilson Shymanski, 52, died suddenly in his Bradenton home May 8. He was born in 1959 at Manatee Memorial Hospital and died just two weeks shy of his 53rd birthday.
Growing up in Palma Sola Park, mere miles from the beach, Wilson began going to Manatee Public Beach at a very early age. His mom, Kay Shymanski, who died in 2007, packed her kids in the station wagon, crossed the causeway, and the family spent nearly every day in the sun and waves on Anna Maria Island.
Older twin brothers Rich and Phil Salick became local surf legends, moving to Cocoa Beach just out of high school, and Wilson followed their lead after graduating in 1977 from Manatee High.
Wilson’s base of friends were many and he even held the title “Mayor of Coconuts” given to him by the Cocoa Beach crew that frequented that famous beach area.
If it was physical, Wilson was good at it — skateboarding, surfing — especially anything to do with the
beach. Wilson became one of the most notable surfers in Cocoa Beach while managing the Salick Surfboards retail store at its famous Third Street North location, home of many notable surfers, including Kelly Slater.
After living in Cocoa Beach for a number of years, he located to Texas for a time before returning to his home in Bradenton.
He had a keen interest in cars, and spent a lot of time working on his 1991 Mustang. An avid keeper of fish, his salt water tanks in his home were pristine wonderlands, always in top condition with the meticulous care he gave them.
In 1999 Wilson was the great “Hero,” as he gave the gift of life to brother Rich by donating a kidney, thus saving his brother’s life.

William Harry ‘Bill’ Snarr
William Harry “Bill” Snarr of Hanover, Ontario, died April 27. He was orn July 13, 1930.
Mr. Snare was former member of the Lord Strathcona Horse Tank Corp Canadian Armed Forces, former superintendent of the Peel Regional Police, retiring in 1982.
A private celebration of life is being planned at a later date.
Mr. Snarr is survived by his wife of 60 years, Dorothy Jean, children Wesley, Victor, Scott, Gail, Suzanne Pearson and Kymberly; 18 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; sisters Joyce, Lorraine Ellis and Susan Hookom of Holmes Beach; and brother Ken.

Betty Anderson
Betty Anderson, 82, of Anna Maria, died April 23. She was born in the mountains of West Virginia in 1929, and graduated from college in Parkersburg, W.Va.
She then moved to Washington, D.C., for work, and met her husband, John. She worked for the U.S. Navy in Washington, D.C., Florida and Nofolk, Va. She worked as an editoral assistant at Walter Reed AMC in Washington, D.C. following her husband’s retirement from the Navy.
After retiring from the civil Service, Mrs. Anderson moved to Anna Maria in 1981, where she and her aunt, Jeanne Blassingame, enjoyed many hours volunteering for the turtle watch group, Island Players, Offstage Ladies and the historical society. She also contributed and attended many fundraising events. She loved the Island, its wildlife, and the close-knit community.
A celebration of Mrs. Anderson’s life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 12, with a reception to follow at Roser Memorial Community Church, 512 Pine Ave., Anna Maria. Shirley Brown Van Winkle
Shirley Brown Van Winkle, 69, of Stratham, N.H., Anna Maria Island and Antigny, France, died in Bradenton April 24, following a brief illness. She was born in Bryan, Texas.
She graduated from Texas Christian University and received a master’s degree in English from Louisiana State University. She was an accomplished writer and enjoyed a real estate career in Austin.
No services are planned.
Mrs. Van Winkle is survived by husband Edward S.; daughter Ana Marie Cox of St. Paul, Minn.; stepchildren Pieter K. of Vashon, Wash., and Hannah K. of Brooklyn; brother Charles E. Brown III of Round Rock, Texas, and many cousins of the Caldwell family.

Cheryll Marie Arnold
Cheryll Marie Arnold, 47, of Bradenton, died March 26.
Miss Arnold attended Charles Leroy Lowman Special Education Center in North Hollywood, Calif., and on moving to Tecumseh, Ok., graduated in 1984 from Bethel High School.
She took classes at St. Gregory’s University, Oklahoma, and participated in a power wheelchair in several Special Olympics hike/bike-athons. She also attended Oklahoma University and participated there in the ROTC program.
When the family moved to Bradenton Beach, she later moved to Bradenton and volunteered at Casa Mora Rehabilitation and Extended-Care Facility. She also returned to participate in summer camp at St. Gregory’s and to volunteer for the Rev. Paul Zahler at the Oklahoma Benedictine Institute in Shawnee, Ok.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 28, at St. Bernard Catholic Church, 248 S. Harbor Drive, Holmes Beach. Cheryl L. (Rankin) Dwinnells
Cheryl L. (Rankin) Dwinnells, 45, of Bradenton died April 10. She moved to Holmes Beach with her family at age 4 from Toledo, Ohio.
She attended Anna Maria Elementary School and graduated from Bayshore High School in 1984. She studied at Manatee Community College. She was a bartender for 12 years at Fan-Atics in Bradenton.

Paul R. Foor
Paul R. Foor, 94, died April 17. He was born in Tower Hill, Ill., and spent much of his life in Mattoon, Ill., where he owned numerous businesses.
Mr. Foor moved to Holmes Beach in l969, and then to Bradenton, where he owned and operated Foor’s Brake & Wheel & Alignment until retirement. He was a combat veteran of World War II with the Fifth Armored Division. He was lifetime member of the Elks Club, American Legion, VFW and the Moose Lodge.
A service was held April 24 at Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 5115 Cortez Road W. Internment was to be at Sarasota National Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Emmanuel United Methodist Church.
Mr. Foor is survived by wife Barbara; children Gerald and wife Gaye of Fenton Mich., Suzanne and husband Gary Reynolds of Greenup, Ill., Glenn and wife Mary McGinnis of Lutz; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Claud E. McComb
Claud E. McComb, 89, of Holmes Beach and formerly of Ontario, Canada, and Costa Mesa, Calif., died April 19. He was born Dec. 28, 1922.
Mr. McComb was a longtime member of Bradenton Masonic Lodge No. 31.

Shoshana ‘Rosalie’ Ladd
Shoshana “Rosalie” Ladd, 84, of Holmes Beach and formerly of West Islip, N.Y., died April 15. She and husband Saul moved to Holmes Beach in 1974.
Mrs. Ladd Rosalie was a graduate of Hunter College and received her master’s degree from Hofstra College. She earned certification to teach science with an emphasis on marine biology. She chaired the long-range planning committee in Holmes Beach for nine years, and helped develop the manual that limited building heights for the city.
She was a member of the Bradenton Yacht Club and the Key Royale Club.

Robert “Bob” F. Carrick, 76, of Holmes Beach died March 29. He was born May 9, 1935, in Baltimore, Md.
Mr. Carrick graduated from Johns Hopkins University School of Engineering. He served in the U.S. Army and the Maryland National Guard.
He retired from the Maryland Department of Transportation as chief of engineering and development at Baltimore Washington International Airport. He was a member of the Johns Hopkins Club, the Engineers Club and Monumental Lodge 181 of Baltimore.
On to Anna Maria Island in 1990, Mr. Carrick was a member of Moose Lodge 2188, the Florida Institute of Saltwater Heritage and an honorary member of the Anna Maria Garden Club.
Mr. Carrick loved carving decoys, fishing and traveling. He and wife Marguerite began yearly visits and walks on Island beaches in 1971.

Lou W. Riesch
Lou W. Riesch, of Holmes Beach died April 3. He was born June 13, 1948, in Chicago to Roland and Ellen Riesch.
Mr. Riesch served in the U.S. Armed Forces 1967-73 and completed a tour in Vietnam.
Mr. Riesch formed Bass Country Homes Inc. In addition to being a business owner, he was active in his community, serving as president of the Mineola Country Club for several years.
He retired to Holmes Beach, where he enjoyed a family home and casting lines from his boat, the Irish Angel.

Florence Elizabeth Gelderman, 93, of Holmes Beach and formerly of Stamford, Ct., died March 27. She was born Nov. 2, 1918, in Bronx, N.Y.
She attended Cathedral High School and graduated from Albany State Teacher’s College (now SUNY). She worked at Mineola High School on Long Island. Mrs. Gelderman became active in the American Legion and served as president of the women’s auxiliary.
She received her master’s degree in counseling from the University of Bridgeport while teaching at Rippowam and then Westhill High School. She mentored the Future Business Leaders of America Club.
After retirement, she moved to Holmes Beach, where she was active in the Council of Catholic Women at St. Bernard Catholic Church, Holmes Beach and the Women’s Club of Anna Maria Island.
A memorial service was held April 2 at St. Bernard Catholic Church.

Harriet Ronan Carlson
Harriet Ronan Carlson, 88, of Bradenton and formerly of Anna Maria and Highland Park, Ill., died March 17. She was born Aug. 3, 1923.
Mrs. Carlson worked 28 years for Highland Park Hospital. In 1985, she retired with husband Don to Anna Maria, where she became an active member of Roser Memorial Community Church. On moving to Bradenton in 1997, she continued her work with the church.

Raymond R. Garant
Raymond R. “Frenchie” Garant died March 1. He was born April 2, 1927, in Windsor, Ontario, Canada.
Mr. Garant retired after 30 years at Pontiac Motors in chassis design and was instrumental in the initial CAD system program. He was an avid golfer, who also enjoyed dancing, fishing, cars and spending time with family and friends near the water.

Mr. Garant is survived by wife Evelyn; daughters Lynn and husband Ron, Laura and husband Doug, Luanne and Lana; grandchildren Julie, Andrew, Bradley, Raymond, Samantha and Brittany; brother Roger and wife Jacky; and sisters-in-law Barbara, Yvette and Genvieve.
George M. McDonald, 97, formerly of Anna Maria Island, died March 20. He was born in upstate New York near the Canadian border and moved to Florida in the 1950s.
He was a glider pilot stationed in France while serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II.
After the war, Mr. McDonald had a varied career path, starting out as an electrician then moving on to become an entrepreneur, building and operating diners and motels in both New York and Florida. Upon moving to Anna Maria Island in the early ’60s, he didn’t find a place to open a diner, and he and wife Vera instead opened what became one of the first arts and craft stores in Florida and, eventually, the biggest in the United States.
Mr. McDonald had countless close friends that spanned his life, including Earl Mowry of Holmes Beach, his good friend of more than 50 years.
A service was held March 23 at Serenity Gardens Cemetery, Largo.
Mr. McDonald is survived by son John and wife Dixie of Gulfport, Jerry’s wife Holley McDonald in Issaquah Washington, grandchildren Kent and wife Leah of Trussville, Ala., and Kerry and husband Tom of Renton, Wash.; and great-grandchildren Miles, Madaline, Sam and Molly.

Richard “Rich” Charles Eisert, 82, of Tampa and formerly of Bradenton Beach, died March 13. He was born and raised in Erie, Pa. He moved in 1989 to Anna Maria Island to manage his family’s guest house, “The Island Breeze.”
Mr. Eisert is survived by companion Ann Heath; daughters Caroline and husband Ted Salchak of Erie, Pa., and Manatee County, and Diane and husband Roland Vildostegui of Tampa; daughter Debbie Salchak of Clearwater; sons Rick and wife Paulette of Erie, Pa., and Douglas of Tampa; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Walter J. Meesenburg, 82, of Holmes Beach, died March 12.
Mr. Meesenburg retired 20 years ago and commuted between his Holmes Beach and Wisconsin homes.
He loved playing tennis.
His friends and family held a celebration of life March 16.
He is survived by wife Giesela, sister Lisa Beesbensee of Mountain Home, Ark., sons Stuart of Nebraska, and Pete and Sven, both of the Chicago area.
Henry James Vaccari
Henry James Vaccari, 77, died March 16.
Mr. Vaccari was employed at Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority in Boston. He was a U.S. Army Korean War veteran. He was a member of the Bradenton Beach Moose Lodge and the American Legion of Somerville, Mass.

Florence Marguerite Woodland, 89, of Queensland, Australia, and formerly of Anna Maria, died Feb. 22. She was born Nov. 23, 1922, in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada.
She attended the Ontario College of Art in Toronto and served in the Canadian Air Force during World War II.
She married an Australian serviceman in 1943, Max Woodland, who was training in Canada during the war. They reunited in Australia and, later moved to Canada and started their family. They moved to Bermuda and lived there for about two years, before coming to the United States in 1953, and then to Anna Maria Island in
the mid-1950s
In the 1960s and ’70s, Mrs. Woodland owned the “Ports of Paradise” and “Spindrift” gift shops in Anna Maria and on Longboat Key. She was active in the Island Players as a makeup artist and a member of Roser Memorial Community Church in Anna Maria.
Mrs. Woodland moved to Queensland, Australia, in 1990. She embraced the Australian lifestyle and traveled extensively throughout Queensland. She also traveled New South Wales and Vanuatu. She was active in the Mooloolah Valley Social Club. She had a lifelong love of animals, always having a variety of cats, dogs and birds, and loved gardening.
Private memorials are planned at a later date in Australia and Florida.
Mrs. Woodland is survived by son Dale, city commissioner of Anna Maria; daughter Melanie Woodland Johnson of Bradenton; grandchildren Scott and Jason and Hunter, Travis and Cole Johnson; great-grandchildren Jordan and Savannah and Kara and Tanna Johnson; brother Francis Atkinson of Fredericton; half-sister Joyce Mowatt of Ontario; cousin Stephen Harper, presently Prime Minister of Canada; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins in Canada, Australia and England.
