Gator Man wins basketball title, soccer heads to cup
Gator Man Pools won its third straight basketball title in the Anna Maria Island Community Center adult coed league June 14 by defeating second-seeded Bowes Imaging 60-54 behind the hot shooting of Aaron Dudukes. Dudukes nailed five 3-pointers on his way to a game-high 23 points to go along with six rebounds and three assists. Matt Dwyer added 13 points, while Cody Sullivan finished with 6 points and three rebounds in the victory.
Jason Mickan scored 15 points and grabbed five rebounds and Matt Ray added 13 points and six rebounds to lead Bowes Imaging, which also received 5 points from Brandon Kern in the loss.
Adult soccer playoffs kick off
And then there were two — teams that is. The center’s adult coed soccer league playoffs were whittled to Wash Family Construction and Island Pest Control after playoff games June 13 and June 14 on the center field.
The action began with Island Pest Control’s workman-like 3-0 victory over Pink & Navy Boutique. Lindsey Weaver and Greg Ross each had a goal and an assist to lead Island Pest Control. Max Gazzo added a single goal and Frank Agnelli made 10 saves in goal.
Goalies Mark Rudacille made 8 saves, while brother Scott Rudacille finished with 5 saves in the loss.
Slim’s Place and Sato Real Estate battled to a 3-3 tie in regulation before deciding the outcome in a penalty-kick shootout won 4-2 by Sato Real Estate. Josh Sato, Paul Heyward, Lexi Braxton and Josh Petit all made their penalty kicks, while only Nick LeDuc and Austin Wash were able to convert for Wash Construction.
Braxton scored two goals and Robert McLaughlin added a goal and an assist to lead the way for Sato. Goalie Jason Sato finished with 15 saves in the victory.
LeDuc scored twice and Omar Polar added one goal in regulation play to lead Slim’s, which received 12 saves from goalie Ryan Moss and 11 saves from goalie Josh Rio in the loss.
1st USA Plumbing and Wash Family Construction also went to penalty kicks to determine a winner after battling to a 2-2 tie in regulation time. Aaron Parkin had a goal and an assist and BJ Grant scored once to lead Wash Family Construction, which also received seven saves from goalie Mark Pennell.
Matt Kretzman and Brian Piha scored a goal each and Pedro Gonzalez made 11 saves in goal to lead 1st USA.
In the shootout, Parkin, Grant and Wash made their kicks for Wash Family Construction, while only Rico Beissert and Tony Frudakis were able to convert for 1st USA in the loss.
The last game of the evening saw Discount Signs & Wraps edge Beach to Bay Construction 1-0 on a goal by Jeff Christianson.
Semifinal action on June 14 saw Wash Family Construction defeat Sato Real Estate in the first game to advance to the finals, while Island Pest Control outlasted Discount Signs & Wraps 5-3 in the second game. Danny Anderson scored two goals to lead Island Pest Control, which also received goals from Sean Sanders, Lindsey Weaver and Greg Ross in the victory.
Damir Glavan, Kim Christianson and Jeff Christianson scored the goals for Discount Signs in the loss.
Key Royale golf news
The Key Royale men played a two-best-balls-of-foursome match on the morning of June 10. The team of Vince Mercadante, Earl Huntzinger and Chris Collins combined on a 12-under-par 52 to tie the team of Fred Meyers, Charlie Knopp and Jim Dunne for first place.
Later in the day, the men played a nine-hole modified-Stableford system or quota points game. Dennis Schavey and Art McMillan tied for first place with matching scores of plus-4.
McMillan also was part of the team title, helping Quentin Talbert, Ray Lammi and Tom Nelson to a plus-4 and first place for the day.
The women got out for a nine-hole individual-low-net golf match June 11. Tootie Wagner grabbed first place in Flight A with a 3-under-par 29, one shot better than second-place finishers Helen Pollock and Kris Landkammer. Sue Hookem and Penny Williams tied for third place at 1-under-par 31.
Liz Lang fired a 7-under-par 25 to win Flight B by one stroke over Roxanne Koche. Luanne Collins and Erma McMullen tied for third at 2-under-par 30.
Kris Landkammer birdied the sixth hole, while Ginny Upshaw had a chip in on hole two.
Horseshoe news
Four teams advanced to the knockout round during June 15 horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City hall horseshoe pits. Sam Samuels made a triumphant return from his golf foray to help Jerry Disbrow defeat John Johnson and John King 22-15 to advance to the finals.
Walker Norm Good won the other semifinal in easy fashion, defeating Tim Sofran and Bob Heiger 21-2. In a tight final, Samuels and Disbrow prevailed 23-19 to earn bragging rights for the day.
Only two teams advanced from pool play during June 12 action. Steve Doyle and Jerry Disbrow edged Tim Sofran and Ron Pepka 22-18 to win the day’s proceedings.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. followed by random team selection.

Center crowns youth b-ball champs, adults enter playoffs
The Anna Maria Island Community Center’s youth basketball season came to an end June 7 after a one-day delay due to Tropical Storm Andrea.
Not one top seed among three divisions captured its championship as second-seeds Heritage Paper Co. in the premier division and Walter & Associates in the 11-13 division and third-seed Manatee Cancer Center in the 8-10 division all scored upset victories.
Premier’s Heritage Paper defeated No. 1 seed Walter & Associates 50-35 behind 19 points and six rebounds from Austin Miller and 13 points and 11 rebounds from Chris Lehman. Tony Sperduto added10 points and 10 rebounds for Heritage, which also received 2 points each from Adam Clark, Sam Cuva, Josh Parrish and Jesse Lawson in the victory.
League MVP Phil Rottes led the Walter & Associates offensive attack with 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Eric Crawford added 8 points and seven rebounds. Neil Carper, Colin Rottes, Jack Walter and Seth Walter completed the scoring in the loss with 2 points each.
Heritage Paper Company advanced to the championship game by defeating Eat Here 39-25 June 5. Austin Miller poured in 22 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead Heritage, which also received 5 points from Burke Hill and 4 points apiece from Adam Clark and Jesse Lawson.
Connor Field’s 9 points and 11 rebounds and 8 points, three rebounds and three assists led the Eat Here offensive attack.
Walter & Associates advanced to the premier division championship game by defeating The Feast 43-32 June 4. Phil Rottes scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, while Colin Rottes added 12 points to lead Walter & Associates, which also received 5 points from Neil Carper and 4 points from Seth Walter in the victory.
Ryan Gilman scored 13 points and Alex Gilman added 8 points to lead The Feast in the loss.
In the 11-13 division championship, a younger Walter & Associates team carried a 45-33 victory over Ross Built behind the inside-outside combination of JP Russo and Dayton Modderman. Russo scored 23 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, while Modderman added 20 points and 20 rebounds to lead Walter. Jack Heckler finished with 2 points and 14 rebounds in the victory.
Trent Boring’s 17 points and 24 rebounds paced Ross, which also received 9 points from Jake Ross and 8 points and seven rebounds from brother Andrew Ross in the loss.
Ross Built advanced to the finals with a 47-27 defeat of fifth-seed Duncan Real Estate, which upset fourth-seed Southern Greens 40-33 June 3. Ross Built received 22 points and 19 rebounds from Trent Boring and 19 points and nine rebounds from Jake Ross. Andrew Ross completed the scoring for Ross Built, while Anna Pears grabbed six rebounds in the victory.
Duncan Real Estate was led by Brooke Capparelli and Leo Rose, who each scored 8 points. Leo Tililli added 6 points and 12 rebounds, while Trent Shackelford finished with 5 points in the loss.
Walter & Associates defeated Sand Dollar 51-46 on June 5 to advance to the 11-13 championship game behind 28 points, seven rebounds and two assists from JP Russo and 17 points and 19 rebounds from Dayton Modderman. Jack Heckler added 4 points and seven rebounds and Joseph Peery finished with 2 points in the victory.
Manatee Cancer Center, which won only two regular-season games, swept to the finals and defeated top-seeded Beach Bistro 22-6 in the championship matchup for the 8-10 division. Silas Banyas scored 10 points and Jack Groves added 8 points and 10 rebounds to lead MCC. Joshy Calhoun completed the scoring with 4 points in the victory.
David Daigle, Cameron Gish and Thomas Heckler scored 2 points each to lead Bistro in the loss.
Manatee Cancer Center advanced to the finals by defeating No. 2 seed Beach Bums 22-12 June 4. Silas Banyas scored 10 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead Manatee Cancer Center, which also received 6 points from Jack Groves, 4 points from Joshy Calhoun and 2 points from Joe Ross in the victory.
Ava Zink’s 6 points and five rebounds and 4 points and five rebounds from Tuna McCracken led Beach Bums, which also received 2 points and seven rebounds from Daniel Sentman in the loss.
Adult b-ball playoffs start
The center’s adult basketball playoffs got underway June 4 with a pair of first-round games. Island Real Estate advanced with a win over Duncan Real Estate 65-44 behind a game-high 27 points and 14 rebounds from Dylan Bower. Jim Lynch added 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Teagan Purtil finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Emily Taylor helped out with 7 points and seven rebounds, while Bobby Dawes finished with 6 points, six rebounds and five assists in the victory.
Philip Slack scored 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead Duncan, which also received 10 points and 11 rebounds from Todd Keiser and 8 points from Serena Samuels in the loss.
Gator Man Pools defeated Southern Greens 56-42 in the second playoff matchup of the evening behind a balanced scoring attack led by Aaron Dudukes, who finished with 15 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Joe Combs added 13 points, while Richard Fosmore and Matt Dwyer finished with 10 points each in the victory.
Jonathan Moss scored 14 points and Robert Serrano added 10 points to lead Southern Greens, which also received 8 points each from Jordan Demers and Scott Eason in the loss.
Key Royale golf news
The women of the Key Royale Club played a nine-hole, individual-low-gross golf match June 4. Sue Hookem carded a 43 to take first place in Flight A by one shot over second-place finisher Jean Holmes.
Liz Lang’s 45 gave her the low gross score in Flight B, while Roxanne Koche took second with a 52.
Low-net winner in Flight A was Terry Westby at 2-under-par 30, while Lang’s 3-under-par 29 was low-net winner in Flight B.
Horseshoe news
Only two teams advanced to the knockout round during June 8 horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits. Hank Huyghe and George McKay defeated Norm Good and John Johnson 23-14 to earn the day’s bragging rights.
John Johnson and Bob Heiger were the only team to earn a 3-0 record in pool play and were the day’s outright champs.

Seedings set for adult soccer playoffs
The regular season is in the books and the second season of playoffs are set to start in the Anna Maria Island Community Center adult soccer league. Island Pest Control grabbed the top seed with a 7-1 record and will face No. 8 seed Pink & Navy Boutique at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 6, to open the playoffs.
Second-seed Sato Real Estate takes on No. 7 Slim’s Place in the second game of the night, while No. 3 Wash Family Construction battles 1st USA Plumbing. The final game in the first-round playoffs has fourth-seed Beach to Bay Construction facing off against No. 5 seed Discount Signs & Wraps. Second-round matches will be held June 13 with the Island Cup the following night at 7 p.m.
The final week of the league’s regular season May 30 saw Island Pest Control defeat Pink & Navy Boutique 2-0. Greg Ross and Max Gazzo each notched single goals to lead Island Pest Control, which also received five saves from Frank Agnelli in the victory.
Discount Signs & Wraps defeated 1st USA Plumbing 3-2 in the second game of the night to overtake them in the standings and earn a higher playoff seed. Jeff Christianson scored two goals and Ryan Hogan added one to lead the offense, while the defense received eight saves from Troy Shonk to preserve the victory.
1st USA Plumbing received a goal each from Rico Beissert and Matt Kretzman. Tony Frudakis added an assist, while Pedro Gonzalez and Beissert each made eight saves while splitting time in goal.
The last game of the evening saw Wash roll over Slim’s by a 5-2 score. Aaron Parkin had a hat trick to lead the WFC offense, which also received one goal from BJ Grant and 13 saves from Mark Pennell in the victory.
Nick LeDuc scored both goals for Slim’s Place, which also received an assist from Ed Moss and 20 saves from Josh Rio in the loss.
Basketball playoffs under way
The adult basketball league at the center also completed regular season play and now it was win or go home for the June 4 playoff startup. Top seed Island Sun now waits to see whether it faces Gator Man Pools or Southern Greens, which also faced off June 4. No. 2 seed Bowes Imaging Center awaits the winner of the Island Real Estate vs. Duncan Real Estate matchup in the opening game. Second-round games will be June 11, while the championship match is set for 9 p.m.June 11.
Bowes Imaging solidified its No. 2 seeding with a 64-57 victory over Island Real Estate during the final regular-season night of adult basketball action. Matt Ray had a strong all-around game for Bowes Imaging with 26 points, 10 rebounds and three assists, while Brandon Kern added 23 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Jason Mickan finished with 11 points, eight rebounds and five assists to round out the scoring for Bowes Imaging.
Dylan Bower’s 20 points and 12 rebounds paced Island Real Estate, which also received 12 points and eight rebounds from Jim Lynch and 9 points, three rebounds and three assists from Teegan Purtil in the loss.
Sun nailed down the top seed by edging Southern Greens 55-51 in the second game of the evening. Andrew Terman scored 21 points and Chad Woods added 14 points, eight rebounds and two assists to lead the Sun, which also received 13 points and 10 rebounds from Eric Gledhill in the victory.
Jordan Demers scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, while Robert Serrano added 14 points to lead Southern Greens in the loss.
Matt Dwyer’s 25 points and eight rebounds along with 23 points, 13 rebounds and three assists from Aaron Dudkes carried Gator Man to an easy 70-54 victory over Duncan in the evening’s last game. Joe Combs finished with 13 points, including three three-pointers to round out the Gator’s victory.
Philip Slack’s 16 points and 11 rebounds and 15 points each from Craig Bores and Justin Jones paced Duncan in the loss.
Center awards basketball teams, players
The regular season of the center’s spring youth basketball league has come to a close and these teams also are trying to stay alive in the win-or-go-home playoffs.
The center also announced the end-of-season awards for each of the three youth basketball divisions.
Joshy Calhoun won the sportsmanship award and Tuna McCracken grabbed the defensive MVP award in the 8-10 division. Ava Zink was the female MVP and Jack Groves captured the overall MVP for the season.
The 11-13 division sportsmanship award went to Nicole Sewall, while Brooke Capparelli captured the female MVP award. Trent Boring was named defensive MVP, while JP Russo was the overall MVP.
The sportsmanship winner for the premier division went to Ryan Gilman with Taylor Wilson grabbing the female MVP award. Connor Field was defensive MVP and Phil Rottes was honored as overall MVP.
Hooke sets another record
Longtime Galati Yacht employee Mickey Hooke ran the seventh annual Spring Lake 5K on May 25 in Brooksville. Hooke ran an impressive 18:38 to take first place overall and break the previous event record by 17 seconds. Hooke is one of only two people to have broken 19:00 on this course, dubbed the toughest 5K in Florida.
The course starts on an uphill, skinny and rooty dirt path before moving to the road for three steep, 1-mile hills before finishing the last third of a mile on flat road.
Hooke’s run also set new masters and grandmasters’ division records for the course.
Key Royale golf news
In observance of Memorial Day, the club women played a “red, white and blue” nine-hole, individual-low-net golf match May 28. They teed up from the reds, whites or blues on predetermined holes and a good time was had by all at the Key Royale Club.
Ginny Upshaw grabbed first place in Flight A with a 3-under-par 29 for a two-shot victory over Penny Williams and Tootie Wagner, who finished tied for second place. Joyce Brown was alone in third at even-par 32.
Liz Lang’s 3-under-par 29 gave her first place in Flight B, while Marcia O’Brien was a shot back in second place. Terry Westby took third with a 1-under-par 31.
Horseshoe news
Ron Pepka teamed with two players to come away with two days of bragging rights in horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits.
On May 29, he teamed up with John Johnson for the only 3-0 pool-play record for the day’s outright winners.
It was déjà vu all over again June 1 when he teamed up with Tim Sofran for bragging rights.

Center sends basketball, soccer seasons into playoffs
The regular season of the Anna Maria Island Community Center’s youth basketball season is over and playoffs start June 3. Beach Bistro and Beach Bums finished with matching 5-3 records in the 8-10 division with Bistro winning the tiebreaker to earn top seed for the playoffs. Beach Bums will take on Manatee Cancer Center in a semifinal matchup June 4, with the winner taking on Beach Bistro in the championship game June 6.
Beach Bistro closed out its regular season in the 8-10 division May 23 with a 20-9 victory over Manatee Cancer Center. Sean Rodriguez led the way with 10 points and six rebounds, while David Daigle and Cameron Gish added four points each. Thomas Heckler closed out the victory with 2 points.
Cancer Center received 8 points from Jack Groves, 1 point from Silas Banyas and eight rebounds from Josh Calhoun in the loss.
Beach Bums also finished on a high note, defeating Cancer Center 16-12 in the second game of the evening. Ava Zink led the way, pouring in 12 points and grabbing four rebounds. Daniel Sentman completed the scoring with 4 points, while also grabbing 11 rebounds in the victory.
Silas Banyas, Jack Groves and Josh Calhoun each scored 4 points and grabbed 7 rebounds to lead Manatee Cancer Center in the loss.
In what could be a preview of the division championships, Bistro edged Bums 14-12 May 22. Sean Rodriguez and David Daigle scored 6 points each to lead Bistro, which also received 2 points and five rebounds from Thomas Heckler in the victory.
Daniel Sentman’s 6 points and 4 points from Ava Zink led the Bums in the loss. Tuna McCracken completed the scoring with 2 points, while also grabbing a team high nine rebounds.
Ross Built and Walter & Associates were the class of the 11-13 division with matching 7-1 records, including a 1-1 head-to-head record. The next tiebreaker is total points, which was to be decided May 29. Whichever team earns the second seed will be in action against No. 3 seed Sand Dollar June 3. The top seed plays June 5 against the winner of the June 3 game between fifth-seeded Duncan Real Estate and fourth-seeded Southern Greens.
Sand Dollar closed out its season May 22 with a 37-26 victory over Duncan Real Estate behind a game-high 22 points from Joey Stewart. Corey Jacques added 11 points, 12 rebounds and three assists, while Trevor Meek and Shelby Morrow both scored 2 points to complete the Sand Dollar scoring.
Leo Rose scored 12 points and pulled down 12 rebounds and Leo Tilelli scored 6 points and grabbed a game-high 22 rebounds to lead Duncan Real Estate. Brooke Capparelli and Joey Theil completed the scoring with 4 points each in the loss.
Walter & Associates comfortably won the Premier Division with an 8-1 record to take on fourth-seed The Feast June 3, while No. 2 seed Heritage Paper Company takes on third-seed Eat Here June 5.
Eat Here ended its season with a 57-38 restaurant vs. restaurant victory over The Feast May 23. Connor Field poured in 23 points and grabbed 21 rebounds and teammate Garrett Ware added 17 points to lead Eat Here. Joey Carder finished with 12 points and three assists, while Pearce Hogan chipped in 4 points and nine rebounds in the victory.
Ryan Gilman’s 13 points and 11 points from Alex Gilman paced The Feast, which also received 7 points and 14 rebounds from Lee Bergeron and 5 points and 15 rebounds from George Lardas in the loss.
Walter & Associates closed out on May 21 with a 49-44 victory over Heritage Paper Co. in what could be another championship preview — to be played June 6.
Phil Rottes scored 16 points and Colin Rottes added 10 points to lead Walter, which also received 9 points and six rebounds from Neil Carper. Eric Crawford added 6 points and pulled down a team-high 12 rebounds in the victory.
Austin Miller scored 17 points and Burke Hill added 16 points to lead Heritage. Sam Cuva scored 9 points and grabbed six rebounds to round out Heritage Co.’s scoring in the loss.
Adult basketball continues
The adult coed basketball regular season is in its final week and, as of press time for The Islander, seedings were up in the air.
The Sun and Bowes Imaging Center were tied for first with matching 5-2 records. Bowes takes on third-place Island Real Estate while the Sun battles fourth-place Southern Greens — and first place is on the line.
The final Gator Man Pools and Duncan Real Estate match May 28 will decide the bottom of the standings.
In adult roundball action May 21, Bowes edged Southern Greens 54-52 behind 25 points, five rebounds and five assists from Brandon Kern. Matt Ray added 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Jason Mickan finished with 7 points, 11 rebounds and six assists in the victory.
Jordan Demers scored 25 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while Ryan Moss added 13 points and 10 rebounds to lead Southern Greens in the loss.
The second game of the evening saw Island Real Estate roll past Gator Man Pools 65-47 behind 21 points and 16 rebounds from Dylan Bower and 20 points and 12 rebounds from Teegan Purtill. Jim Lynch and Kyle Stopa each finished with 10 points in the victory.
Aaron Dudukes scored 22 points and grabbed 9 rebounds to lead Gator Man Pools, which also received 14 points from Joe Combs and 6 points and 14 rebounds from Matt Dwyer in the loss.
The Sun kept pace with Bowes May 21 in a 54-50, overtime victory over Duncan Real Estate in the final game of the evening. Sun outscored Duncan 6-2 in the overtime period behind 4 points from Eric Gledhilll and a pair of free throws from Andrew Terman, who finished with a team-high 24 points in the victory. Gledhill finished with 16 points and 17 rebounds, while Chad Woods added 12 points.
Todd Keiser’s 14 points and 14 rebounds along with 13 points and eight rebounds from Mike Haines paced Duncan Real Estate, which also received 12 points and six rebounds from Justin Jones in the loss.
Soccer also heads to playoffs
The adult coed soccer league at AMICC has one week of season remaining. Island Pest Control is locked on top seed, but there’s a lot of shuffling to come as the remainder of the teams are packed tightly. Stay tuned.
Playoffs get started June 6 and continue through to June 14 and the Island Cup.
In soccer action May 23, 1st USA Plumbing defeated Discount Signs & Wraps 4-2 behind three goals from Rico Beissert and one goal from Matt Kretzman. Chris Circharo scored for Discount Signs & Wraps.
The second game of the evening saw Wash Family Construction kick past Slim’s Place by a 5-1 margin. Scott Hertrick scored two goals and Aaron Parkin added a goal and two assists. Sato Real Estate tied Beach to Bay Construction 3-3 in the night’s final match. Brent Moss notched all three goals for Beach to Bay while Josh Sato scored two goals to lead his team, which also received one goal from Josh Petitt.
Key Royale golf news
The women of Key Royale Club hit the links for a two-best-balls-of-foursome match and an individual low-net contest May 21.
The team of Joy Kaiser, Janet Rassi, Penny Williams and Christina Mason combined on an 83 to take first place in the team event.
Williams also captured first place in Flight A in the individual-low-net match with a 3-under-par 29. Sue Wheeler was one shot back in second place, while Fran Barford, Ginny Upshaw and Joyce Brown tied for third place with matching 1-under-par 31s.
Erma McMullen carded a 3-under-par 29 to grab first place in Flight B. Luanne Collins took second with 2-under-par 30, while Kathy Porter and Terry Westby tied for third at 1-under-par 31.
Horseshoe news
Only two teams emerged from pool play with 3-0 records and were left to battle it out for first place in May 25 horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City hall horseshoe pits.
Hank Huyghe and John Johnson rolled past Tim Sofran and Dom Livedotti 22-8 to earn bragging rights for the day.
The team of John Johnson and Norm Good were the only team to earn a 3-0 pool play record May 22 and were the day’s outright champions.
Play gets under way at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. followed by random team selection.
There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.

Adult soccer teams jockey for playoff positions, golf and more
With two weeks of the regular season left to play in the adult coed soccer league at the Anna Maria Island Community Center, teams are jockeying for position in the standings to gain favorable playoff matchups.
Playoffs get underway June 6 and will continue through June 14, when the Island Cup finals and all-star games takes place.
Island Pest Control appears to be maintaining control of the division with a 5-1 record and a 4-point lead in the standings over second-place Sato Real Estate, the remainder of the teams are separated by only 3 points.
Slim’s Place and Beach to Bay Construction are both 3-3 with 9 points, while 1st USA Plumbing and Discount Signs & Wraps are 2-3-1 and have 7 points. Last, but not least, are Wash Family Construction and Pink & Navy Boutique, both with 2-4 records and 6 points. With two games left to play, a lot can change — stay tuned.
In the past week’s soccer action May 16, Island Pest Control earned a statement win, rolling past second-place Sato Real Estate by a 6-1 margin. Danny Anderson and Greg Ross scored two goals each with Ross also collecting an assist on the evening. Max Gazzo added a goal and an assist, while Sean Sanders completed the scoring with one goal. Frank Agnelli made 13 saves in goal for Island Pest Control.
Paul Heyward notched the lone goal for Sato Real Estate, which also received eight saves from goalie Mike Brusso in the loss.
Slim’s Place doubled up on Pink & Navy 6-3 in the second game of the evening. Nick Leduc scored five goals and Ed Moss scored one goal to lead Slim’s Place, which also received assists from Diego Felipe and Austin Wash in the victory. Ryan Moss made 12 saves in goal.
Matt Plummer scored twice and Anthony Rasulo scored one goal to lead Pink & Navy in the loss.
Discount Signs & Wraps edged Wash Family Construction 4-3 in the third game of the night. Jeff Christianson led the way with two goals and one assist. Paulo Fonseca added one goal and one assist and Damir Glavan completed the scoring with one goal. Troy Shonk preserved the victory for Discount Signs with 19 saves in goal.
Wash Family Construction was led by two goals from Darren Wash and a goal and an assist from BJ Grant. Aaron Parkin assisted on two goals and Mark Pennell made 12 saves in defeat.
The final game of the evening saw Beach to Bay Construction cruise past 1st USA Plumbing by a 3-1 score. Julius Gomes led the way with two goals and one assist, while Brent Moss added one goal.
Rico Beissert scored the lone goal for 1st USA Plumbing, which also received 15 saves from Pedro Gonzalez in the loss.
Youth basketball rolls on
Youth players had a light week of basketball with no games played in the 8-10 division and only a couple of games in the 11-13 and 14-17 divisions.
Ross Built and Walter & Associates both won their games last week, so there’s no changes in the standings. The two teams remain tied for first place at 7-1 with Sand Dollar alone in third place with a 3-4 record. Southern Greens is 2-6 for fourth place, while Duncan Real Estate is in last place, still looking for its first victory.
Walter & Associates is on top of the Premier Division as well with a 7-1 record, one game ahead of Heritage Paper Company. The Feast is in third place with a 2-6 record, while Eat Here brings up the bottom with a 1-7 record.
Walter & Associates took on Eat Here May 14 in one of the two 14-17 division games played last week and came away with a 39-20 victory behind the inside-outside combination of Neil Carper and Eric Crawford. Carper scored 16 points, grabbed eight rebounds and dished out three assists, while Crawford scored 13 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Seth Walter added 4 points and six rebounds, while Cooper Hardy, Colin Rottes and Phil Rottes completed the scoring with 2 points each.
Eat Here was led by Garret Ware’s 8 points and 6 points from Joey Carder. Connor Field added 3 points and nine rebounds and Taylor Wilson scored 3 points to complete the scoring in the loss.
Heritage Paper Company kept pace with Walter & Associates in the 14-17 division with a 33-28 victory over The Feast May 13. Austin Miller led the way with 16 points, while Burke Hill added 5 points. Sam Cuva and Tony Sperduto each finished with 4 points for Heritage Paper Company in the victory.
Lee Bergeron’s 9 points and nine rebounds led The Feast, which also received 7 points from Ryan Gilman. Chris Johnson and Alex Gilman each added 6 points to complete the scoring in the loss.
Walter & Associates cruised past Duncan Real Estate 42-25 May 13 to stay on top of the 11-13 division behind a huge game from Dayton Modderman. He scored 22 points and grabbed 20 rebounds, while teammate JP Russo added 16 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Jack Heckler’s 4 points completed the scoring for Walter & Associates in the victory.
Leo Tilelli’s 12 points and 14 rebounds paced Duncan Real Estate, which also received 5 points from Trent Shackleford and 4 points from Leo Rose in the loss.
Ross Built kept pace with Walter & Associates by defeating Souther Greens 43-20 in the second game on May 13. Trent Boring poured in 20 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. Jake Ross added 16 points, while brother Andrew chipped in with 4 points and eight rebounds in the victory.
Hayden Brewer scored 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Southern Greens, which also received 6 points and eight rebounds from Matthew Manger in the loss.
Key Royale golf news
The Key Royale Club women played an individual-low-net golf match May 14 with a side game of low putts for the day.
Joyce Brown negotiated nine holes using 13 putts, while Jean Holmes and Maxine Mitchell each used 14 putts to tie for second.
Holmes rode a birdie on the sixth hole to take first place in Flight A with a 3-under-par 29. Sue Hookem finished in second place with a 2-under-par 30.
Brown rode her low putts for the day to a 7-under-par 25 that gave her a tie for first place in Flight B with Liz Lang. Meredith Slavin took second place with a 3-under-par 29.
Erma McMullen carded a 3-under-par 29 to take first place in Flight C by two shots over second-place finisher Markie Ksiazek.
MAYSO announces youth soccer tryouts
The Manatee Area Youth Soccer Organization has announced tryout dates and times for Manatee Magic, its competitive soccer program.
Cost per player for the Magic season, which runs September-March, is $400 and includes home and away uniforms and a backpack.
All MAYSO Magic coaches are licensed and possess many years of coaching and playing experience.
Tryouts will be held at G.T. Bray Park in Bradenton 6-7:30 p.m. May 28-June 5 for age groups as follow:

Youth basketball takes shape, soccer tryouts announced
Youngsters are playing basketball in age divisions at the Anna Maria Island Community Center, and the teams to beat are rising to the top in the standings. Though there are no unbeaten teams, favorites are becoming apparent.
The 8-10 Division has pretty good parity, but Beach Bums appears favored to go all the way. It currently sits at 4-2, a game ahead of 3-3 Beach Bistro and two games in front of 2-4 Manatee Cancer Center.
The Premier Division appears to be a two-horse race between Walter & Associates at 6-1 record, one game better than Heritage Paper Company at 5-2. The Feast at 2-5 and 1-6 Eat Here follow in the standings.
The 11-13 Division has Walter & Associates and Ross Built tied with 6-1 records. Ross Built defeated Walter & Associates 42-28 on April 26, while Walter & Associates returned the favor on May 6, earning a 46-34 victory.
Walter & Associates was in action May 11 against third-ranked Sand Dollar, which came into the game with a 3-3 record. Both teams got off to slow starts offensively with Walter & Associates grabbing an early 8-6 lead, but Joey Stewart got hot in the second quarter, scoring 10 points to give Sand Dollar a 22-20 lead at the half.
Walter & Associates, which outrebounded Sand Dollar 49-23 for the game, started capitalizing on its size advantage to take a 37-34 lead after three quarters. JP Russo scored 10 points in the quarter, while Dayton Modderman added 5 points to the 17-12 run.
Walter & Associates closed the game out with a 14-5 fourth quarter to win the game by a comfortable 51-39 margin.
Russo led all scorers with 26 points, including 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Modderman added 15 points and 22 rebounds, while Jack Heckler finished with 6 points and 16 rebounds in the victory.
Joey Stewart led Sand Dollar with 21 points and 5 rebounds, while Corey Jacques added 10 points and 11 rebounds in the loss.
The 8-10 division game of the week saw Beach Bistro edge Beach Bums on May 11. David Daigle paced Beach Bistro with 8 points, 6 rebounds and 1 assist. Abby Clark and Sean Rodriguez each added 6 points in the victory.
Daniel Sentman scored 8 points and grabbed 6 rebounds to lead Beach Bums, which also received 6 points from Ava Zink in the loss.
Walter & Associates edged The Feast 40-39 in the Premier League game of the week May 11. W&A rode a balanced attack that saw six-out-of-seven players score, and was led by 9 points from Seth Walter and 8 points each from Neil Carper and Phil Rottes. Eric Crawford added 7 points and eight rebounds, while Jack Walter added 6 points and 12 rebounds in the victory.
Ryan Gilman’s 14 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists paced The Feast, which also received 12 points from Alex Gilman and 10 points and 11 rebounds from Chris Johnson in the loss.
Locals fair well in Island Run
The 11th annual Island Run, which benefits the Children’s Academy of Southwest Florida, attracted 194 runners to the May 4 starting line. The 5K course that wound through the Anna Maria City streets, tested runners with higher than expected temperatures and the incline of the Crescent Drive bridge at the 2.5 mile mark.
Michael Lamb, 23, of Bradenton, was the overall winner with a time of 16:40, while Anna Neal took first overall among females with a time of 21:30.
Longtime Galati Yacht Sales employee Mickey Hooke set another state masters record with a time of 17:47. Other notable finishers include Islanders Sandy Meneley, who won the grandmasters division with a time of 23:20, and Erma McMullen, who took the Veteran Grandmasters division with a time of 32:54.
Other winners include Jane Asha Gauge, masters 22:45; Rich Mann, grandmasters 20:11; John Batts, senior grandmasters 21:23, Lollette Knox 29:18; and Jim Hicks, veteran grandmasters 25:42.
Adult basketball continues
The adult-coed basketball league at the Anna Maria Island Community Center is about midway through its season, but the race for the top seed remains fairly tight. The Sun is on top at 4-1, closely followed by 3-2 Bowes Imaging Center and Island Real Estate. Duncan Real Estate and Southern Greens follow at 2-3, while Gator Man Pools is languishing at the bottom of the standings at 1-4.
Gator Man Pools earned its first victory of the season, defeating Southern Greens 55-53 May 7. Aaron Dudukes led Gator Man with 23 points, 10 rebounds and three assists, while Matt Dwyer added 18 points, 5 rebounds and two assists. Joe Combs and Richard Fosmore rounded out the Gator Man scoring with 6 points each in the victory.
Jordan Demers scored 16 points and grabbed 9 rebounds to lead Southern Greens, which also received 11 points and four assists from Jonathan Moss and Scott Eason. Ryan Moss added 10 points and six rebounds in the loss.
In other action May 7, Bowes Imaging Cener got rolled 75-35 by the Sun and Island Real Estate edged Duncan Real Estate 54-48.

Key Royale Club’s week of golf ended May 10 with a best-ball-of-threesomes match. The team of Jim Dunne, Bob Dickinson and Earl Huntzinger took first place with a 5-under-par 27.
The men played an 18-hole, combined team score game May 8. The team of Tom Lewis, Tony Hiewyk, Vince Mercadante and Earl Ritchie matched the 22-under-par 106 carded by Jim Thorton, Gary Harris, Carl Voyles and Bob Elliott to finish in a tie for first place.
Thirty-six women took over the course May 7 for a shotgun start to the summer golf season.
Helen Pollock got her summer off to a good start, carding a 3-under-par 29 to take first place in Flight A. Joy Kaiser and Pam Alvord tied for second place at even-par 32.
Maxine Mitchell’s 4-under-par 28 gave her a two-shot victory in Flight B over Terry Westby and Joyce Brown who tied for second at 2-under-par 30.
Kathy Porter fired a 4-under-par 28 to earn a two-shot victory over Barb Renk in Flight C. Joyce Lathrop finished in third place at even-par 32.
Marcia O’Brien’s 6-under-par 26 was the low round of the day and gave her first place in Flight D. Sally Keyes took second place with a 4-under-par 28, while Judy Hanson, Markie Ksiazek, Erma McMullen, Luanne Collins and Joanne Ozdych tied for third at 1-under 31.
The men played a modified-Stableford or quota points match May 6. Bob Soos and Barry Anderson tied for individual honors at plus-3. The team of Craig Humphreys, Gary Duncan and Charles Kutrumbos tied the team of Bill MacMillan, Blake Rees, Lex Halakan and Rich Papini at plus-3.
Tom Lewis carded a 4-under-par 60 to take first place in the men’s 18-hole, individual-low-net match May 4. Larry Fowler was two shots back in second place with a 2-under-par 62.

Serrano returns walk-off favor to Paradise Bagels
Of two youth divisions playing baseball at the Anna Maria Island Community Center, the 8-10 age group’s season opened April 26 and ended with an inside-the-park home run for Tyler Brewer with Tony Rappold on base, giving Paradise Bagels a walk-off victory.
Fast forward to May 3 and Gerardo Serrano’s two-out, two-strike base hit to right centerfield with the score a 9-9 tie, giving Beach to Bay Construction the 10-9 victory.
Paradise Bagels jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top in the first inning on hits by Gianna Sparks, German Rivera, Tyler Brewer and Travis Bates, with Sparks, Rivera and Brewer coming in to score.
Beach to Bay Construction kept it close with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Joel Peters and Serrarno singled and scored on a single by Riley Peters and an RBI double by Julius Peteriet.
Paradise Bagel extended its lead to 5-2 in the third inning on hits by Rivera, Bates, Callen Achor, Sean Rodriguez and Roman Langley.
Beach to Bay Construction went down quietly in the third and fourth innings, but came to life in the fifth.
Will Batey singled and scored on a single by Sam Howells. Watson then came up and cleared the bases with an inside-the-park home run for a 5-5 score. Riley Quillin and Joel Peters later came around to score, giving Beach to Bay a 7-5 lead after five innings.
Paradise Bagels came right back with four runs in the top of the sixth inning, three on Tuna McCracken’s inside-the-park home run, which also plated Rivera and Callen Achor.
Beach to Bay Construction’s rally started with singles by Bryce Higgins and Cecilia Peteriet. Batey singled in Higgins, and a ground out by Quillin scored Peteriet, tying the score at 9-9 and setting the stage for Serrano’s heroics.
The Anna Maria Island Community Center’s baseball league plays Monday and Fridays, starting at 6 p.m. for T-ballers, age 5-7, and 7:15 p.m. for the pitching machine-age 8-11 division.
Ross Built undefeated in basketball
With the AMICC youth basketball season at the halfway mark, only Division I Ross Built remains with a 5-0 perfect record. However, it only gives them a half-game lead over second place Walter & Associates, which sits at 4-1. Sand Dollar is alone in third place with a 2-2 record followed by 1-4 Southern Green and winless Duncan Real Estate.
The Division II standings are tight: Beach Bums is on top with a 3-1 record followed by 2-3 Manatee Cancer Center and Beach Bistro, all tied for second, or last, depending on your perspective.
Walter & Associates is on top of the Premier Division standings with a 4-1 record, while 3-2 Heritage Paper Company is a game back. Eat Here and The Feast are tied at 1-3.
Heritage Paper improved to 3-2 with a 42-26 thumping of previously unbeaten Walter & Associates May 4 in the Premier Division game of the week. Burke Hill led Heritage Paper with 12 points, while Tony Sperduto added 10 points and Chris Lehman finished with 8 points in the victory.
Phil Rottes’ 7 points and 6 points from Neil Carper paced Walter & Associates, which also received 5 points from Seth Walter in the loss.
Sand Dollar improved to 2-2 on the season on a win over Duncan Real Estate 37-32 behind 18 points and 19 rebounds from Corey Jacques in the Division I game of the week April 29. Joey Stewart added 15 points for Sand Dollar in the victory.
Leo Rose scored 17 points and Leo Tilelli added 7 points, 16 rebounds and four assists to lead Duncan Real Estate.
Beach Bums stayed on top of the Division II standings, thanks to an 18-16 victory over Manatee Cancer Center May 2. Daniel Sentman led the way with 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Ava Zink finished with 4 points in the victory.
David Daigle’s 12 points and 6 points from Sean Rodriguez led the Manatee Cancer Center scoring effort in the loss.

Another busy week of golf at Key Royale Club closed out with a coed scramble May 3. The team of Maryanne Kaemmerlen, Ron Robinson, Jim Dunne and Bob Dickenson managed a 12-under-par 20 to lap the field.
The men played a team scramble May 2. The team of Terry Schaefer, Ken Rickett, Tommy McDonnell and Randy Clark matched the 4-under-par 28 carded by the team of Jerry Dahl, Jim Kirk and David VandeVrede to tie for first place.
The game of the day May 1 was a best-ball-of-foursome match. The team of Art Hibbs, Al Kaiser, Wade Ladue and Paul Proxy combined to card a 16-under-par 48 to earn a one-shot victory. The team of Jim Thorton, Bob Elliott, Carl Voyles and Gary Harris took second place with a 49.
The women took over the links for an individual-low-net-in-flight match April 30. Tootie Wagner and Pam Alvord both carded 2-under-par 30s to finish in a tie for first place in Flight A. One shot back and tied for second were Marlyn Thorton and Sue Hookem.
Joyce Brown negotiated the Key Royale track at 3-under-par for a two-shot margin over fellow Flight B competitors Penny Williams, Fran Barford, Kris Landkammer and Maxine Mitchell.
Kathy Porter’s 2-under-par 30 was good enough for first place in Flight C. Two shots back and alone in second place was Barb Renk.
Connie Livanos carded a 3-under-par 29 to grab first place in Flight D by one shot over second-place finisher Shirley Cessna. Markie Ksiazak was another shot back in third place.
April 29 saw the men take the course for two rounds. The morning was a nine-hole, best-ball-of-partners match. Bill Martin and George Barford combined on an 8-under-par 24 to earn a one-shot victory over Ernie Hauser and Vince Fanton.
The afternoon match was a modified-Stableford game. Craig Humphrey’s plus-5 gave him first place in the individual competition by one shot over Tom Nelson and Terry Schaefer, who both finished at plus-4.

Youth basketball, baseball seasons take off at AMICC
The Anna Maria Island Community Center youth basketball season got underway last week in the gym. Most games are being played weeknights with some games also being played on Saturdays.
Beach Bums sits atop the Division II standings with a 2-0 record after one week of action. Manatee Cancer Center is on their heels with a 2-1 record, while Beach Bistro is looking for its first win.
Ross Built is on top of the Division I standings with a 3-0 record. Walter & Associates is right behind with a 2-1 record, followed by 1-1 Sand Dollar and winless Southern Green and Duncan Real Estate.
The premier division has Walter & Associates in first place with a 3-0 record, while Heritage Paper Company is in second with a 1-1 record. Eat Here and The Feast are still in search of a first victory in the startup league.
Jack Groves scored all 18 points to lead Manatee Cancer Center past Beach Bistro 18-16 in Division II basketball action April 27. Groves also chipped in 14 rebounds for his team, which also received seven rebounds from Josh Calhoun in the victory.
Beach Bistro was led by David Daigle, who scored 10 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Thomas Heckler added 4 points and six rebounds, while Sean Rodriguez finished with 2 points and five rebounds in the loss.
Ross Built rolled to a 45-27 victory during Division I action April 27 behind 19 points and 13 rebounds from Trent Boring and 18 points and seven rebounds from Jake Ross. Andrew Ross added 6 points and 11 rebounds and Hannah McCracken finished with nine rebounds in the victory.
Joey Stewart scored 13 points and Corey Jacques added 10 points and 14 rebounds to lead Sand Dollar in the loss.
Walter & Associates rolled to a 43-25 victory over Duncan Real Estate in Division I action April 27 behind 21 points from JP Russo and 16 points and 19 rebounds from Dayton Modderman.
Duncan was led by Leo Rose, who scored 19 points, while Leo Tilelli added 8 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the loss.
Trent Boring scored 18 points and grabbed 19 rebounds to lead Ross Built to a 42-28 victory over Walter & Associates during Division I basketball action April 26. Jake Ross added 12 points and twin brother Andrew finished with 10 points, six rebounds and two assists in the victory.
JP Russo’s 21 points and 10 rebounds and 8 points and 17 rebounds from Dayton Modderman paced Walter & Associates in the loss.
Southern Green edged Sand Dollar 36-34 in Division I basketball action April 26. Hayden Brewer led Southern Green with 13 points and seven rebounds, while Edward Cullinan finished with 10 points and 17 rebounds. Blake Battle added 6 points, while Mathrew Manger and Brandon Mills each chipped in with 4 points in the victory.
Corey Jacques led all scorers with 21 points and grabbed 20 rebounds to lead Sand Dollar, which also received 6 points from Joey Stewart in the loss.
Walter & Associates cruised to a 41-27 victory over The Feast in premier division action April 26. Phil Rottes led Walter & Associates with 14 points and 18 rebounds, while Seth Walter added 12 points. Neil Carper chipped in with 5 points, while Jack Walter and Eric Crawford finished with 4 points each in the victory.
Alex Gilman scored 14 points and Lee Bergeron added 10 points and 10 rebounds to lead The Feast in the loss.
Paradise Bagels gets walk-off victory
Paradise Bagels Cafe opened the 2013 baseball season for youths April 26 at the Anna Maria Island Community Center with a walk-off win over Beach to Bay Construction 5-4.
While trailing 4-3 with Tony Rappold on base with a single, the cafe’s Tyler Brewer came up and delivered a two-run, inside-the-park home run to end the game in dramatic fashion.
MAYSO announces youth soccer tryouts
The Manatee Area Youth Soccer Organization has announced tryout dates and times for Manatee Magic, its competitive soccer program.
Cost per player for the Magic season, which runs September-March, is $400 and includes home and away uniforms and a backpack.
All MAYSO Magic coaches are licensed and possess many years of coaching and playing experience.
Tryouts will be held at G.T. Bray Park in Bradenton 6-7:30 p.m. May 28-June 5 for age groups as follow:

Horseshoe news
Two teams advanced to the knockout round during April 27 horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits. Rod Bussey ended the championship match with a six-pack — double ringer — to lead both he and Carl Samuelson to a 26-11 victory over Herb Puryear and Marvin Gangemi.
The April 24 games had four teams advance from pool play with matching 2-1 records. The first playoff match saw Jerry Disbrow and Ron Pepka take out Bruce Munro and Gene Bobeldyk 22-11, while Art Kingstad defeated Rod Bussey and Hank Huyghe 21-4 in the second playoff. Kingstad walked over Disbrow and Pepka in the finals, defeating them 21-4.
Play gets under way at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. followed by random team selection. There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.
Key Royale golf news
The members of Key Royale Club got together for a coed best-ball-of-foursome match April 26. The team of Rose Slomba, Terry Westby, Jim Dunne and Bob Dickinson combined on a 7-under-par 25 for first place.
The team of Bob Soos, Dale Hudson, Joe Muscatello and Larry Pippel matched the 4-under-par 28 carded by Jack Conners, Dave Johnson and Art McMillan to tie for first place in a nine-hole team scramble April 25.
The Key Royale men played an 18-hole, two-best-balls-of-foursome match April 24. The team of Al Kaiser, Wade Ladue, Jim Helgeson and Carl Voyles combined on a 32-under-par 96 to earn an eight-shot victory over the second-place team of Earl Ritchie, Larry Fowler, D. Johnavey and Tom Lewis.
Jerry Elson scored a plus-6 to take first place during the April 22, modified-Stableford match at the club. Dale Hudson, Earl Ritchie, Gary Silke and Larry Pippel tied for second place at plus-4.
The foursome of John Cassese, Joe Cassese, Bill Melvin and Rod Bluhm won the team competition with a combined score of plus-5.
The club women played a nine-hole, individual-low-net-in-flight match April 23.
Joy Kaiser and Judy Crowe both carded 4-under-par 28s to tie for first in Flight A. Pam Alvord was one shot back in second, while Jean Holmes finished third with a 1-under-par 31.
Joyce Brown’s 7-under-par 25 gave her a three-shot victory in Flight B over Margrit Layh and Sue Christenson, who tied for second place. Meredith Slavin was another shot back in third place.
Sue Wheeler carded a 6-under-par 26 to earn a 7-shot victory over Maryanne Kaemmerlen and Jan Jump in Flight C. Barb Lindwall and Roxanne Koche tied for third at 3-over-par 35.
Markie Ksiazek’s 8-under-par 24 was the low-net round of the day and gave her first place in Flight D. Shirley Cessna took second place with 4-under-par 28, while Sharon Conlon, Joanne Ozdych and Rose Slomba tied for third with matching 30s.
Bob Landgren and John Sagert combined on an 8-under-par 56 to take first place in the nine-hole, low-net-of-partners match April 22. Andrew Barber and Dave Kruger finished one shot back in second place.

Adult sports takeover spring season at community center
Adult spring soccer and basketball are in a third week of games and both leagues appear to have parity — only one team is unbeaten in basketball while three teams are sitting perfect in soccer.
The Sun sits atop the basketball league with a 2-0 record, while Southern Green, Duncan Real Estate, Bowes Imaging Center and Island Real Estate all sport 1-1 records. Gator Man Pools is still searching for its first victory.
Bowes Imaging won its first game, defeating Southern Green 60-46 to open spring basketball action April 16. Brandon Kern’s 22 points and 18 points from Matt Ray paced Bowes in the victory.
Jordan Demers scored 25 points and Jonathan Moss added 11 points to lead Southern Green in the loss.
Sun defeated Duncan 58-42 in the second game of the evening behind 26 points from Andrew Terman and 13 points from Sean Hubbard.
Evan Wolf led Duncan with 21 points, while Philip Slack added 10 points in the loss.
The final game of the evening wound up with Island Real Estate defeating Gator Man Pools 42-31. Dylan Bower scored 15 points to lead IRE, which also received 12 points from Teagon Purtill in the victory.
Gator Man Pools was led by Aaron Duduke’s 17 points and 8 points from Joe Combs in the loss.
The adult coed soccer league has Island Pest Control on top of the early standings with a 2-0 record, but 1st USA Plumbing and Sato Real Estate are right behind IPC with 1-0-1 records. Wash Family Construction, Slim’s Place and Beach to Bay Construction all sport 1-1 records, while Discount Signs and Wraps and Pink & Navy Boutique are searching for an inaugural victory.
Sato Real Estate rolled past Slim’s Place 4-0 to open the April 18 action. Josh Petit scored two goals, while Lexi Braxton and Paul Heyward each added one goal. Jason Sato earned the shutout with eight saves in goal.
Beach to Bay Construction edged Discount Signs and Wraps 3-2 in the second game of the evening behind a goal each from Julius Gomes, Brent Moss and Blair Schlossberg. Don Purvis made 16 saves in goal to preserve the victory.
Paulo Fonseca and Kim Christianson each scored a goal to lead Discount Signs and Wraps, which received 12 saves from goalie Troy Shonk in the loss.
Rico Beissert notched three goals and Matt Kretzman added two goals to lead 1st USA Plumbing to a 5-2 victory over Pink & Navy in the third game.
Matt Plummer and Anthony Rausulo scored a goal each to lead Pink & Navy Boutique in the loss.
Island Pest Control remained on top of the standings with a 4-1 victory over Wash Family Construction in the final game of the night. Lindsey Weaver scored two goals to lead Island Pest, which also received goals from Sean Sanders and Danny Anderson in the victory.
Scott Hertrick notched the lone goal for Wash in the loss.
Another record run
Longtime Galati Yacht Sales employee and former islander Mickey Hooke took second place overall in the fourth annual Shark Tooth 10K at the 21st annual Venice Shark Tooth Festival April 13 in Venice. Hooke’s time of 38:19 over the 6.2 mile course earned him first place and a 2013 RRCA Florida Master 10K state championship and a new grandmasters division record for the course.
The masters win was Hooke’s 18th championship since 2000.
Horseshoe news
Two teams emerged from pool play in the April 20 horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits. Gene Bobeldyk and Steve Grossman cruised to a 22-11 victory over George McKay and Karl Thomas to earn bragging rights for the day.
Five teams advanced to the knockout round during April 17 horseshoe action. Tom Skoloda and Hank Huyghe rolled past Herb Puryear and Adin Shank by a 21-7 score in the first playoff game. John Crawford and Ron Pepka edged Rod Bussey and Josh Slagh in the second match.
The next round saw Skoloda-Huyghe eliminate Bruce Munro and Ron Slagh 24-17 to advance to the finals. In the finals, Crawford-Pepka threw an easy 21-8 victory over Skoloda-Huyghe.

Key Royale golf news
The men took over the Key Royale Club golf course April 17 for their annual Spring Stag Day tournament. Eighty-two men participated in the event, which included morning and afternoon nine-hole golf matches and a variety of contests.
Low gross winner for the day was Mark Mixon, who carded a 1-over-par 33, while low-net winner was shared by Dan Hayes and Dennis Schavey, both finishing at 5-under-par 27.
John Estok, Joe Scholz, Dennis Schavey and Greg Shorten won the team low-net competition with a 7-under par-121.
The members teamed up for a two-best-balls-of-group match April 19. The winning team of Nell Bergstrom, Bob Dickinson and Earl Huntzinger combined on a 14-under-par 50. Second place went to the team of Jim Dunne, Sue Little and Rose Slomba with a 1-over 65.
The team of Al Dicostanza, Jon Holcomb, Hoyt Miller and Ken Rickett combined on a 4-under-par 28 in a nine-hole scramble April 18.
The Key Royale women took over the links for a nine-hole, low-net-in-flight match April 16. Marlyn Thorton needed only 12 putts to card a 4-under-par 28 and take first place in Flight A by one shot over Pam Alvord. Beatrice Friebe took third place with a 2-under-par 30.
Penny Williams torched the course with a 6-under-par 26 to take first place in Flight B. Joyce Brown and Ginny Upshaw both carded 4-under-par 28s to finish in a tie for second place.
Barb Lindewall’s 7-under-par 24 was the low round of the day and gave her first place in Flight C. Kathy Porter was five shots back in second place, while Jan Jump was alone in third place with a 1-under-par 31.
Marcia O’Brien fired a 7-under-par 25 to take first place in Flight D by three shots over second-place finisher Erma McMullin. Shirley Cessna finished with a 2-under-par 30 in third-place.
Neil Hammer and Chet Hutton both carded 5-under-par 27s to finish in a tie for first place during a nine-hole, individual-low-net golf match April 15. One shot back and tied for second were Arch Fowler and Dennis Schavey.
Later the same day, the men played a nine-hole, modified Stableford or quota points match. Dan Hazewski, Dale Hudson, Rich Papini and Charlie Porter each finished with plus-4 to tie for first place. KRC finale, spring-summer sport leagues under way
The Anna Maria Island Community Center has myriad sporting opportunities available for adults looking to have some fun and stay active. Basketball on Tuesdays, kickball on Wednesdays and soccer on Thursday evenings are three offerings that got started this past week.
Soccer topped the adult sporting action April 11. The first game of the season saw 1st USA Plumbing tie Sato Real Estate 4-4. Paul Heyward scored two goals to lead Sato while Lexi Davis and Josh Petit each added one goal. Mike Brusso made 10 saves in goal to preserve the tie.
Matt Kretzman’s two goals and a goal and an assist from Rico Beissert paced 1st USA Plumbing on offense. Goalie Pedro Gonzalez made seven saves in the loss.
Island Pest Control doubled up on Florida Discount Signs with a 4-2 victory behind a pair of goals from Lindsey Weaver in the second game of the evening. Danny Anderson added a goal and an assist while Frank Agnelli scored one goal and made four saves in goal.
Paulo Fonseca scored two goals to lead the Florida Discount Sign offense, while Troy Shonk made 18 saves in the loss.
Wash Family Construction demolished Pink & Navy Boutique by a 5-0 score in the third game. Darren Wash and Scott Hertrick scored two goals each, while Aaron Parkin scored one goal, two assists and five saves in goal.
Scott Rudacille made 11 saves to lead the Pink & Navy effort.
Slim’s Place received four goals and an assist from Nick “Canadian Freight Train” LeDuc, during its 7-3 victory over Beach to Bay Construction. Omar Polar added two goals and two assists for Slim’s, which also received a goal and an assist from Austin Wash and 12 saves from Ryan Moss.
Julius Gomes scored two goals and Brent Moss added one goal to lead Beach To Bay Construction, which also received 10 saves from Don Purvis in goal.
Basketball season also got going with three games played April 9. The first game of the evening was a doozy, as Duncan Real Estate edged Bowes Imaging 71-68 behind 23 points and six rebounds from Todd Keiser, and 15 points, five assists and three rebounds from Evan Wolfe. Mike Haynes added 11 points, while Chris Smith and Justin Junes each finished with 8 points in the victory.
Brandon Kern sank six three-pointers on the way to a game-high 29 points. Jason Mickan added 16 points, while Alban Gega finished with 6 points in the loss.
The second game of the evening was another close affair as the Sun rode a balanced scoring attack to edge Gatorman Pools 45-42. Sean Hubbard scored 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, while Andrew Terman scored 13 points and Chad Woods finished with10 points. Eric Gledhill scored only 2 points, but hauled in 15 rebounds in the victory.
Aaron Dudukes scored 18 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead Gatorman Pools, which also received 13 points from Joe Combs in the loss.
Southern Green defeated Island Real Estate 51-42 behind 17 points and 10 rebounds from Jonathan Moss and 14 points and nine rebounds from Jordan Demers in the final game of the night. Scott Easton and Ryan Moss scored 7 points each in the win.
Dylan Bower’s 19 points and 10 rebounds, and 11 points from Jim Lynch paced Island Real Estate in the loss.
Horseshoe news
Three teams advanced to the knockout round in April 13 horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. John Crawford and Marvin Gangemi drew the bye into the finals and watched as Adin Shank and Gene Bobeldyk slipped past Herb Puryear and Bruce Munro 21-16. Crawford and Gangemi then defeated Shank and Bobeldyk by the same 21-16 score to earn bragging rights for the day.
The April 10 games saw two teams advance to the final round. The team of Gene Bobeldyk and Dave Lansaw won the day’s proceedings in a route, defeating John Crawford 21-3 in the finals.

Key Royale golf news
It was another busy week at the Key Royale Club, where members put down their clubs to attend the 45th annual farewell and award’s dinner the evening of April 13. All of the various club champions and runners up were recognized, as well as the players who got a hole-in-one during the year.
The women took the course for the club’s annual “Doe Day” on the morning of April 9 with Judy Christenson and Jan Jump chairing the event that includes different games on each hole followed by wine on the patio and lunch.
Erma McMullen and Brenda Sollevid won the day with Fran Barford and Sue Wheeler taking second place. Marianne Siegler and Sally Keyes finished alone in third place.
On April 12 the members played a nine-hole, best-ball-of-playing-group match. The team of Rose Slomba, Sue Little, Dave Kruger and Earl Huntzinger combined on a 10-under-par 22 to grab first place for the day. One shot back in second place was the team of Terry Westby, Jim Dunne and Sue Liddle.
The team of Barry Izzard, Larry Pippel, Charlie Porter and Blake Ress combined on a 5-under-par 27 to win the nine-hole, team scramble on April 11. Second place went to the team of Tom Nelson, Greg Shorten, Jim Menzies and Terry Schaefer, who combined on a 3-under-par 29.
The men played an 18-hole, two-best-balls-of-foursome match April 10. The team of Gary Harris, Jim Thorton, Carl Voyles and Bob Elliott won the day with 24-under-par 104. One shot back in second place were Al Kaiser, Wade Ladue, Jim Helgeson and Art Hibbs, who finished in a tie for second with Pete Weir, Dick Eichhorn, Bob Landgren and Tom Lewis.
The morning of April 8 saw the men in a nine-hole, two-best-balls-of-foursome match. The team of Pieter Thomassen, Neil Hammer and Gerry Taylor combined on a 15-under-par 49 to grab a one-shot victory over Tom Lewis, Tom O’Brien and Jim Helgeson.
The afternoon match was a nine-hole, modified Stableford or quota-points game. Tim Friessen rode an eagle on the second hole to a plus-6 score and first place in the individual game. Two points back and tied for second were Gary Duncan and Mike Gillie at plus-4.
Friessen’s plus-6 also helped his team of John Holcomb, Al DiConstanza and Mike Ross to the team title with a plus-2.
