Island police blotter – 05-23-2012

Anna Maria

• May 12, 100 Cedar Ave., petit theft. A complainant reported her father’s memorial bench was missing, telling a Manatee County Sheriff’s Office deputy the last time it was seen was May 6. The bench was later located at the Willow Avenue beach access, a block north of its former location. However, the memorial plaque was missing from the bench.

• May 8, 200 block of Gladiolus Street, grand theft. A complainant reported that several items were stolen from her home. At press time, the MSCO deputy reported he had not yet received all of the information from the victim.

Bradenton Beach

• May 12, 5100 block of Cortez Road, warrant. A 42-year-old Bradenton Beach woman was arrested on outstanding warrants after attempting to take a cab from the Clam Factory following a night of drinking. Upon arriving home, the woman told the cab driver she could not find any money and asked to be taken back to her vehicle. En route back to the Clam Factory, the driver was ordered by his dispatcher to stop and contact law enforcement. A MSCO deputy attempted to resolve the situation on scene. The woman offered to pay the $17 fare by check, but doing so was against the taxi company’s policy. She then attempted to borrow the money from the deputy, offering a credit card, which was declined. The deputy did a record check and found two active warrants, one each from Polk and Brevard counties. She was taken into custody on the warrants and charged with petit theft.

• May 16, 117 Bridge St., domestic battery. Police responded to a call of domestic violence at the Sports Lounge. While en route to the call, a police officer observed a woman fitting the description of the suspect. The officer made contact with the woman, who did not initially want to cooperate, but reported to the officer that she and her husband had been arguing. Police made contact with the husband at the Sports Lounge, and he said they had been arguing all day. Upon exiting the establishment, the husband noticed his car had been damaged. His wife allegedly admitted she had run into her husband’s vehicle with her own. She then reportedly said she was going to drive her vehicle into a building, at which time the husband called 911. The woman also was alleged to have slapped her husband in the face before leaving the scene on foot. She was charged with misdemeanor domestic battery.

Holmes Beach

• May 13, 600 Manatee Ave., theft. A witness reported a male and female taking a kayak from Westbay Cove condominiums. The witness reported to police that he didn’t want to report it right away, thinking the female may have been the victim’s sister. Upon contacting the victim, it was discovered that the person taking the kayak was unknown. The kayak had been locked to a post, but the lock was cut.

• May 10, 6300 Flotilla Drive, petit theft. A male complainant reported a woman’s teal-and-white 26-inch Schwinn Cruiser bicycle stolen. He had rented the bike and left it outside of his condo.

• May 10, 200 block of 85th Street, vehicle burglary. A complainant reported someone had stolen his GPS unit from his unlocked vehicle. Finger prints were secured at the scene.

• May 10, 5400 Marina Drive, drugs. A 24-year-old Bradenton man was arrested for possession of marijuana and knowingly driving on a suspended license. Michael Bergbreiter Piazza was stopped by police after the officer noticed an expired tag. Upon approaching the vehicle, the officer reported smelling burnt marijuana. Piazza was secured at the scene and gave permission for officers to search the vehicle, where they found .09 grams of marijuana, 16 oxycodone pills, five morphine pills and 1.5 bars of Xanax. The report did not indicate if the suspect had a prescription but, as of press time, had only been charged with driving while license suspended and misdemeanor marijuana possession.

• May 11, 6101 Marina Drive, criminal mischief. While on routine patrol, a Holmes Beach police officer noticed two broken window panes at Island Real Estate. A brick was found inside the business. The damage was estimated at $200.

• May 9, 5800 block of Marina Drive, theft. A female complainant reported a bicycle stolen from her front yard. She told police she typically locks the bike up, but had not done so the previous night. It is described as a red, 21-speed Raleigh with a white basket.

• May 11, 3700 block of Gulf Drive, vehicle burglary. A mother and daughter reported the passenger side window of their vehicle had been broken and both of their purses were stolen. The value of items was listed at $630. Finger prints were secured at the scene.

• May 11, 3700 block of Gulf Drive, vehicle burglary. A female complainant reported her rear side window had been broken. Her purse and a friend’s purse had been stolen. The total value of items stolen was $750. Finger prints were secured at the scene.

• April 29, 500 block of 68th Street, burglary. A complainant reported a burglary to her residence where a silverware set valued at $1,500 had been stolen. Police observed a possible entry point at the rear sliding-glass door and secured finger prints at the scene.

• May 12, 5410 Marina Drive, battery. A woman reported being punched in the face by another woman while at D.Coy Ducks. Witnesses interviewed at the scene told police the two women had been arguing, and confirmed that one woman did punch the other before leaving the establishment. The woman was identified and cited for misdemeanor battery.

• May 12, 4000 Gulf Drive, disturbance. Police were called to a disturbance where a woman reported that her juvenile brother had been hit by a car during a dispute over a parking space. A second female was accused of hitting the boy, but told police she had been waiting for the parking place and, as she began to pull in, the boy ran into the space to hold it for his sister. The woman reported the boy had slammed his fists on her hood when she told him he could not save the parking space. Witnesses on the scene verified the woman’s story of the boy hitting the car, and the sister and brother were asked to leave the beach parking lot.

Island police blotter – 05-16-2012

Anna Maria

        • May 5, 200 N. Shore Drive, criminal mischief. A group of adults and teenagers became involved in a verbal dispute at the Anna Maria City Pier, but separated without incident. Later that day, the two groups came into contact again and another dispute ensued. One of the teens maliciously damaged a vehicle owned by one of the adults, however, the man refused to press charges, telling the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office deputy he would pursue the matter in civil court.

• 10005 Gulf Drive, battery. A 20-year-old Anna Maria man was arrested on a misdemeanor battery charge in Holmes Beach following an argument between he and his father that turned physical. According to the report, the father questioned his son about money that had gone missing while he was in jail. The son became upset and wanted to leave in his dad’s car. The father grabbed a screwdriver to remove the license plate to prevent his son from taking the car, at which time the son allegedly attacked his father, shoving him repeatedly and punching him. During the scuffle, the son cut his hand on the screwdriver, and told law enforcement that his father had stabbed him. The investigation concluded the son was the aggressor.

May 5, 800 block of North Shore Drive, domestic disturbance. While on beach patrol, a MSCO deputy was flagged down by a female, who reported she had just swam from Egmont Key following an argument with her boyfriend. The woman reported she had taken the boyfriend’s boat keys because he was too drunk to operate the craft. The boyfriend then was alleged to have knocked the woman’s cellphone from her hands, after which she said she jumped overboard to avoid further confrontation. Deputies were unable to make contact with the boyfriend by Islander press time.

Bradenton Beach

• May 2, 2502 Gulf Drive, disturbance. Police responded to the Dream Inn in response to a disturbance. A male complainant said his female companion was causing problems due to being “too intoxicated,” according to the report, and he wanted her to leave.

• May 4, 2600 block of Gulf Drive, felony warrant. Police arrested Jill Rickerson, 36, on a felony warrant for failure to comply with a summons.

• May 5, 2600 block of Gulf Drive, domestic disturbance. Police responded to find a couple arguing. Police reported both people were intoxicated, but no physical altercation occurred. Domestic packets were issues.

Cortez

• May 4, 4400 block of 123rd Street, information. A complainant reported he sold a trailer, which contained his tools. The man reported he had been in contact with the buyer, who promised to return the tools, but had yet to do so. The complainant was advised that since both parties were aware the tools were on the trailer at the time of purchase, the matter would have to be taken up in a civil court.

• May 7, 4400 block of 123rd Street, domestic disturbance/Baker Act. A mother and her adult son became involved in an argument, at which time the son began to break things in their home. A deputy reported the son also had punched the wall, injuring his hand. The mother reported she was “very afraid” of her son, according to the report. The son was reported to say he may harm himself.

• May 9, 4000 block of 129th Street, theft. A complainant reported a stolen kayak. According to the report, the kayak was stored in a shared garage, hanging from the ceiling by ropes, which were cut.

• May 10, 11900 Cortez Road, vehicle theft. A golf cart was reported stolen from the Holiday Cove RV Resort.

Holmes Beach

        May 3, 200 block of 82nd Street, theft. A female complainant reported a male juvenile had stolen her debit card from her purse and ran away from home. Further investigation revealed the juvenile is on probation. The complainant was advised to cancel her bank cards and the juvenile’s probation officer was contacted. At press time, police were searching for the juvenile.

• May 2, 3000 block of Avenue C, domestic disturbance. A couple became engaged in a verbal argument. The woman called 911, saying she was concerned the argument was escalating, but told police she only called because the man said she wouldn’t. Police advised the woman that 911 is not to be used as a threat. Domestic violence packets were issued.

• May 1, 5400 Marina Drive, criminal mischief. Police responded to a criminal mischief complaint at the Sand N Sudz Laundromat and discovered a broken plastic chair, and a shattered sliding-glass window. The establishment has video surveillance, which recorded three males entering the business. Video showed two of the men exited while one remained inside. The suspect inside the business then threw a book through the window. He was shown entering a vehicle with the other two men. The investigation continues.

• May 5, 200 block of 84th Street, petit theft. A man reported his garbage can stolen. He told police that he happened to notice his neighbor had two trash cans, but did not want police to interview the neighbor.

• May 5, 600 block of Gladstone Lane, vehicle burglary. A man reported someone had entered his boat, stealing custom-made fishing gear valued at $300. The man told police his residence and dock are under video surveillance and he would turn the video over to police. The investigation continues.

• May 8, 1400 Cortez Road, failure to report found property. A Holmes Beach man was arrested for failure to report found property, after a MSCO deputy made contact with him on Cortez Road. According to the report, the man was riding a girl’s blue bicycle with a flowered basket. Upon making contact with the suspect, the deputy asked why he was riding a girl’s bike. The man said he had borrowed it from his girlfriend’s sister, but the deputy noted the bike still had a price tag affixed to it. The suspect then changed his story, saying he had found the bike. He was taken into custody for failing to report found property.

• May 9, 300 block of 67th Street, vehicle burglary. A woman complainant reported someone had entered her unlocked vehicle. Approximately $10 in change was reported stolen. Finger prints were taken at the scene.

• May 9, 4900 block of Gulf Drive, domestic disturbance. A mother and her adult daughter became involved in an argument when the daughter became upset that her mother brought home a “strange man” from a bar. Police observed the “strange man sitting peacefully on the couch,” while the mother and daughter continued to argue, the report stated. Domestic violence packets were issued.

May 8, 600 Manatee Ave., larceny. A male complainant reported a stolen kayak valued at $350. According to the report, the man returned from a fishing trip and locked his kayak with two others. On his return, he found only his kayak was missing.

Island police blotter – 05-09-2012

Anna Maria

• April 19, residence not listed, lewd and lascivious behavior. A man is under investigation for allegations that he masturbated in front of a minor.

• April 24, 500 block of Pine Avenue, criminal mischief. An unknown suspect broke a gas cap off of a church vehicle. When asked by the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office deputy if any gas was missing, church staff reported they were unsure because the vehicle is not often driven.

• April 27, 500 block of Bayview Place, noise ordinance. A deputy was called to a residence where children were playing basketball outside. According to the report, the children were making excessive noise. The parent was informed of the city’s noise ordinance.

• April 22, 100 block of Crescent Drive, suspicious incident. A deputy responded to a complaint of possible illegal entry into a residence. The complainant reported that someone had entered the home through an unlocked window and exited out of the back door. There was no report of missing property.

• April 30, 700 N. Shore Drive, dogs. A complainant reported that two dogs on the beach had jumped on her, causing a 4-inch scratch to her inner right thigh. Animal services also was called. One dog owner received a written warning because the dog was reported to be a service dog. The second dog owner was cited and animal services took possession of the dog.

• April 28, 400 N. Shore Drive, information. A MSCO deputy responded to a possible hit-and-run call. Upon arriving, the deputy found a female lying on the ground, bleeding from the head and knees. She reported that she had not been hit by a car, but could not recall what happened. She admitted to the deputy she had been at a party where she had “11 or 12 drinks.” She left the party to walk home and apparently fell down. She was transported to the hospital.

• May 1, 800 block of Jacaranda Drive, information. A complainant contacted the sheriff’s office regarding his neighbor, who had run a stop sign. The complainant confronted the neighbor, who allegedly yelled and cursed at him. The complainant began writing down his neighbor’s license plate number, at which time the neighbor again became upset and called the complainant into the street. The complainant became concerned and wanted the incident documented.

Bradenton Beach

• April 29, 400 block of Second Street West, violation of a repeat violence injunction. On April 27, a 39-year-old Bradenton Beach man was arrested on misdemeanor domestic violence charges and issued a temporary injunction to not return to his home without police presence. The initial arrest occurred when his girlfriend was attempting to leave him, and the man physically grabbed the victim in front of a police officer. Two days later, the girlfriend wanted to return to the residence to retrieve some belongings and called police to first check for the presence of her boyfriend. Police located him sleeping in the living room and arrested him for violating the injunction. According to the report, police heard the boyfriend say, “Once I’m out, I’m going to take care of that bitch.”

• April 29, 100 block of 13th Street South, burglary. A complainant reported he had left his computer and iPod on his counter when he left the residence for dinner. Upon his return, both items were missing. The investigation continues.

• April 29, 2400 block of Avenue B, criminal mischief. A female complainant reported the rear passenger door window of her vehicle had been broken out. According to the report, the doors were unlocked and nothing was missing.

Cortez

• April 30, 12118 45th Ave. W., battery. A female complainant reported she had been involved in a verbal argument with a man and it had turned violent. According to the report, the female alleged the male had punched her twice in the face, and thrown her to the ground. She reported that the argument started when she asked the man why he had hit her sister. A female witness who was helping the complainant up from the ground, also was allegedly threatened by the man. According to the report, he said, “I’ll kill you, too.” Deputies reported the two women appeared to be intoxicated and there were no physical marks indicating an altercation. The investigation continues.

• May 2, 4600 124th Ave. W., trespass. A man, who was fired from his employment the previous week, returned to his former workplace intoxicated, yelling and causing a disturbance. He was issued a trespass warning and told not to return to the property.

Holmes Beach

• April 27, 5346 Gulf Drive, disorderly intoxication. Lori Porter, 40, of Bradenton was arrested for disorderly intoxication and giving false information to a law enforcement officer. She was at Hurricane Hank’s restaurant and began yelling profanities at staff and customers. She was asked to leave, but refused. Police made contact with Porter, who initially refused to give her name, and then gave a false name and birth date. Police eventually secured Porter’s identification, which revealed she had lied, according to the report. She was taken to the Manatee County jail and detained on $240 bond.

• April 24, 8300 block of Marina Drive, suspicious incident. Police responded to a call of two teens in a golf cart, carrying what appeared to be a rifle. Upon making contact with the teens, police found an unloaded pellet gun. The owner of the gun said he was transporting it to a friend and that his parents were aware he had it. Police secured the gun and told the teen it was not a smart way to transport a gun. Police contacted the parents, who said their son was only supposed to have it while visiting the country. The pellet gun was returned to the parents.

• April 25, 4000 Gulf Drive, petit theft. A beachgoer at Manatee Public Beach went to the rest room, where he took off four titanium rings at the sink. The man left without his rings and upon returning a few minutes later, discovered they were gone.

Island police blotter – 05-02-2012

Anna Maria

• April 22, 200 block of Archer Way, burglary to a vehicle. Unknown persons entered an unlocked vehicle with several items being reported stolen.

• April 21, Gulf Drive/Palmetto Avenue, habitual traffic offender. A Manatee County Sheriff’s Office deputy observed and stopped a man for unlawfully passing another vehicle. According to the report, the man drove off the road to make the pass. Further investigation revealed the man was driving with license suspended and was a habitual traffic offender.

• April 6, 800 block of South Bay Boulevard, burglary to a conveyance. A complainant reported that someone stole the anchor system, valued at $200, off his boat.

Cortez

• April 6, 12107 45th Ave. W., fraud. A complainant reported that someone had filed federal income taxes in his name.

• April 25, 127th St. W., trespass warning. During construction on the Cortez Bridge, a man living on a boat at the marina near the bridge became upset at the work crew over noise and debris falling near his boat. According to the report, the man entered the work zone, yelled at the workers, and began to approach the workers. The man was asked to leave and refused, causing the crew to stop work for 20 minutes. He eventually left and was contacted by a deputy, who gave the him a trespass warning to keep away from the work area.

Holmes Beach

• April 25, 4000 Gulf Drive, felony petit theft. Jared Caruso, 25, was arrested on a felony charge after allegedly stealing a can of beer from the CVS/Pharmacy. The manager of the store reported he witnessed Caruso take the beer and put it inside a black bag in his possession. The manager confronted Caruso, who kept walking. Police made contact with Caruso and, after an investigation, learned he has multiple petit theft convictions. Caruso was placed in custody on $1,000 bond and was scheduled for a May 25 arraignment.

• April 22, 4101 Gulf Drive, burglary. Police investigated a burglary complaint and learned the suspect is under investigation in at least one other burglary. The suspect’s niece reported the burglary of an apartment complex, listing paintings, tools and TVs stolen, all valued at $17,000.

• April 21, 6300 Flotilla Drive, larceny/theft. A complainant came to the Holmes Beach Police Department to report a kayak, valued at $900, had been stolen.

• April 21, 100 block of 43rd Street, beverage law. Upon receiving a complaint from a citizen, police made contact with a group of juveniles on the beach. When the officer approached, according to the report, he observed the male juveniles attempting to hide containers of beer. There were five female juveniles, three male juveniles and two 18-year-olds in the group. After passing a Breathalyzer test, a female was allowed to drive the remaining females home. The male driver of the group failed a Breathalyzer and his father was contacted to pick him up. The remaining juveniles’ parents also were contacted to pick up the youths.

Island police blotter – 04-25-2012

Anna Maria

• April 3, 402 Pine Ave., theft. A Crime Stoppers tip was provided to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office regarding some items stolen from the Anna Maria Historical Society. A deputy made contact with the museum director and provided her with a list of items to check. After a search for the items, the director confirmed they were missing. The investigation continues.

• April 9, 200 block of Chilson Avenue, ordinance violation. A complainant contacted MSCO about construction noise after 10 p.m. Upon arrival, the deputy made contact with the foreman of a crew working on a seawall and informed him that city ordinance prohibits construction work after 7 p.m. The foreman said Anna Maria public works director George McKay approved the nighttime work due to it having to be done during low tide. The deputy contacted McKay, who confirmed the approval. The deputy gave the complainant an option to file a complaint, but it was declined.

• April 3, intersection of Gulf Drive and Magnolia Avenue, contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Two adults allegedly supplied a 13-year-old female under their supervision with alcohol. The MSCO deputy made contact with the two adult males, who denied the allegations. Two witnesses to the incident swore out affidavits. The girl’s mother was contacted and gave verbal permission for a family member to take the juvenile home. Emergency responders were called to the scene and the girl was medically cleared and allowed to leave with the family member.

Bradenton Beach

• April 14, 1800 Gulf Drive S., found bone. During the Anna Maria Island Privateers Thieves Market event, a vendor discovered what appeared to be a partial jaw bone with three molars intact. The vendor left the area with the bone and contacted MSCO April 18. The bone was secured by deputies and turned over to a crime scene technician for analysis.

• April 18, 100 Highland Ave., DUI. A Bradenton Beach man was charged with driving while license suspended and driving under the influence, according to a MSCO report. James Gallery, 26, was arrested and booked into the Manatee County jail and held on a total of $6,000 in bond.

• April 13, 2500 block of Avenue B, domestic disturbance. Police responded to a domestic disturbance call to find a couple engaged in a verbal dispute. The male was asked to leave the house for the night.

• April 15, 2500 block of Gulf Drive North, vehicle burglary. Several items were reported stolen from an unlocked vehicle.

• April 17, 120 Bridge St., Drift In, trespass warning. A female customer at the bar was issued a trespass warning for creating a disturbance.

• April 14, 400 Gulf Drive S., theft. A group of juveniles went to Cortez Beach and upon arriving home, one of the youths discovered his iPod missing from his vehicle. The complainant reported it stolen and told police that his friends had been in possession of his car keys.

• March 7, 4000 block of Marina Court, theft. A female complainant reported her jewelry stolen. According to the MSCO report, the complainant suspected the cleaning crew.

Holmes Beach

• April 12, 100 block of 31st Street, drugs. A Lake Placid woman was arrested on felony possession of a controlled substance. According to the arrest report, Whitney Bush, 20, was found with one Adderol pill inside another bottle of pills. She also was found to have three small bags of marijuana in her possession. Bush was charged with misdemeanor possession for the marijuana and felony for the Adderol possession. She was scheduled for arraignment May 11.

• April 11, 4000 Gulf Drive S., assist Manatee County Marine Rescue. A Holmes Beach police officer reported he responded to a 9-1-1 hang-up call at Manatee Public Beach in reference to a man in distress in the water. Upon arriving, the officer made contact with lifeguards on the scene. The man was brought safely to shore.

• April 11, 4100 block of Sixth Avenue, suspicious incident. A female reported to police that a suspicious package had arrived to her home. The package, addressed to her son, was from Hong Kong. The mother opened the package in front of the officer and discovered a sealed foil package inside. In the foil were two small, pink, pentagon-shaped pills “with a strange design on them,” according to the report. The pills were secured for identification.

• April 15, 400 block of 75th Street, criminal mischief. A complainant reported a damaged mailbox valued at $100. According to the report, the mailbox appeared to have been pushed over by a vehicle.

Island police blotter – 04-18-2012

Anna Maria

• April 7, 300 block of Palm Avenue, burglary/vandalism. According to a Manatee County Sheriff’s Office incident report, an unknown person entered a duplex under construction. The suspect defecated and stuffed a hand towel in the toilet, causing it to overflow. Water damage occurred to several walls.

• April 7, 100 block of Palm Avenue, possible cyber bullying. A MSCO deputy responded to an Anna Maria residence regarding a threatening phone call. The deputy learned the call originated from Holmes Beach and HBPD was contacted. However, further investigation revealed the complainant’s daughter was having a hard time with some classmates. The deputy learned the threatening phone call was made by one of the juveniles. One of the classmates is alleged to have posted a degrading comment on Facebook. The post was removed when the mother complained. The deputy documented the investigation and sent the information to the school resource officer where the girls attend school.

Bradenton Beach

• March 31, 304 Church Avenue, burglary. At some point in the afternoon, an unknown person entered the complainant’s boat and stole a pair of rods and reels. Police reviewed a security camera, but could not determine a suspect due to the camera pointing in the opposite direction. The investigation continues.

Holmes Beach

• April 7, 3400 E. Bay Drive, petit theft/resisting arrest. A man entered the Island Publix and left without paying for a bag of rolls, according to a MSCO arrest report. The manager of the store followed the man outside to the parking lot, where the suspect began eating the rolls. The manager escorted the man back inside and asked the suspect to pay. The man refused and became argumentative. When the suspect attempted to leave, the manager tried to stop him and was pushed aside. The suspect was arrested for petit theft and resisting arrest of detention.

• March 15, 200 block of 64th Street, theft. Police contacted a male complainant who reported his 15-year-old daughter’s surfboard had been stolen from the front yard. The white and blue board was valued at $400.

• March 28, 5600 block of Carissa Lane, theft. Police responded to a report of a theft. A male complainant reported his utility trailer, carrying a lawnmower, had been stolen. According to the police report, the trailer hitch was not locked. The stolen items were valued at $4,000.

• March 28, 4000 Gulf Drive, theft. A female complainant reported a stolen Coach wallet from her towel while at Manatee Public Beach. She reported that all of her identification and $17 in cash were taken.

• April 1, 4000 Gulf Drive, theft. A male complainant filed a theft report at the police department regarding a bag that was stolen at Manatee Public Beach. The complainant reported he had left the bag unattended and his wallet was inside the bag. According to the report, there was no money in the man’s wallet, but his identification and food stamp card were taken.

• April 3, 5608 Marina Drive, burglary. A male complainant at Island Auto Repair reported to police that his tools and multiple office scanners had been stolen overnight. Police could find no points of forced entry. The complainant then reported that spare keys to the building are hidden outside. The stolen items were valued at $8,000-$10,000.

• April 4, 4000 Gulf Drive, vehicle burglary. A female complainant reported she left her vehicle unlocked while at Manatee Public Beach. Upon her return, she discovered her wedding ring set and earrings had been stolen. The items were valued at $5,200.

• April 6, 3200 block of Sixth Avenue, theft. A female complainant reported the theft of a girl’s purple bike from the front of her rental home. The bike belongs to Island Scooter.

• April 8, 8300 block of Marina Drive, larceny/theft. A male complainant reported his yellow kayak had been stolen from the dock. The man told police he had tied up the kayak with yellow and black rope. The rope was missing as well. The kayak was valued at $800.

Island police blotter – 04-11-2012

Anna Maria

• March 27, 100 S. Bay Blvd., trespass warning. A Manatee County Sheriff’s Office deputy responded to the Anna Maria Pier restaurant regarding a customer who left the restaurant without paying his bill. En route to the call, the deputy spotted the suspect and initiated a traffic stop. The suspect acted genuinely surprised, according to the report, saying he forgot to pay. The deputy reported the suspect was either under the influence or had a mental impairment, so he believed the suspect genuinely forgot to pay. The suspect was escorted back to the restaurant to pay his bill. The manager agreed with the deputy’s assessment, and did not press charges. However, the manager did not want the customer to return, so he was issued a trespass warning.

• March 29, 800 block of South Bay Boulevard, petit theft. For the second week in a row, a garbage can was stolen from someone’s front yard. The value of the garbage can was listed at $60.

Cortez

• April 2, 127th Street, domestic violence injunction violation. According to a MSCO report, a woman filed a domestic violence injunction against a man, who had moved within 500 feet of her workplace. The suspect had been convicted in 2011 on domestic violence charges and was required to stay more than 500 feet from the victim at all times.

• April 3, 4400 block of 123rd Street, criminal mischief. A complainant reported that her fence had been partially broken. The woman told deputies her neighbor had been calling code enforcement on her and other neighbors, who had begun to call code enforcement on him. The complainant believed the broken fence was retaliation and told deputies the man had previously come to her workplace to start an argument with her.

Island police blotter – 04-04-2012

Anna Maria

• March 21, 200 block of Gladiolus Street, petit theft. A female complainant discovered a check had been stolen from the middle of her checkbook when a second complainant informed her it also had happened to her. Both checks were cashed for $475. The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office reports a suspect was identified. The case has been turned over to the MSCO fraud unit.

• March 22, 600 block of North Bay Boulevard, noise. A deputy met with a female complainant regarding loud music coming from a house behind hers. The deputy made contact with the occupant, who said he had just arrived home from work and turned on his stereo. He told the deputy he didn’t realize it was loud. He was given a warning and reminded of the city’s noise ordinance.

• March 24, 800 block of North Shore Drive, criminal mischief. A woman complained she was having problems with people crossing her backyard and walking on her seawall. She installed a small gate with plastic chains at each end of the seawall. The complainant reported someone pulled the posts out of the ground and broke the chains.

• March 25, 400 block of Spring Avenue, petit larceny. A woman complainant contacted the sheriff’s office about a stolen garbage can. The woman said she wanted to file the report because the city required it before issuing her a new garbage can.

• March 26, 800 block South Bay Boulevard, disturbance. A male complainant reported to MSCO that a man was driving his vehicle up and down the street with a noisy muffler. The man told the deputy he went out into the street and yelled for the driver to stop making noise. He then reported that the man yelled back at him to get out of the way. The deputy made contact with the vehicle owner, who said he had just purchased it and was working on the muffler. The deputy advised both parties to call the sheriff’s office if there were further issues.

Bradenton Beach

• March 21, 100 block of Seventh Street, grand theft. A female complainant reported her laptop stolen while she was at work. The woman told police she had placed her laptop under her mattress after being told an air conditioner service person would be entering her apartment. The woman named her roommate as a possible suspect, telling police he is a new roommate and is on probation for burglary. As she was signing the complaint, the roommate came home and told police he saw a female in her late 30s mingling with workers. The landlord also was contacted about the incident, and reported he has had problems with the complainant and her friends in the past, telling police, “Maybe she should get better friends to hang around with.” The investigation continues.

• March 25, 107 Seventh St. N., simple battery. An employee at the Gathering Place was told to clock out and leave the restaurant immediately by her employer. The defendant alleged to have placed her hands on the complainant’s shoulders and physically turn her toward the exit. The complainant told police this physical contact was unwanted and wanted to press charges. There were no witnesses to the incident, but a video captured what appeared to be the defendant placing her hands on the complainant, however, police noted that part of the video was blocked by a cash register.

Island police blotter – 03-28-2012

Anna Maria

• March 15, 400 block of Alamanda Road, disturbance. A Manatee County Sheriff’s Office deputy responded to a 911 call in regards to two groups of people arguing over a traffic incident. The deputy made contact with people yelling and cursing at one another, “and accusing each other of reckless driving,” the report stated. The deputy documented the verbal argument and no further action was taken.

• March 17, 300 block of Tarpon Avenue, noise. A MSCO deputy responded to a noise complaint and made contact with the home’s occupants, who were on the back porch listening to music and talking loudly. The deputy informed the men of the city’s noise ordinance and issued a final warning. The occupant said he was not aware of the ordinance, but would comply.

• March 17, 100 S. Bay Blvd., theft. While fishing on the Anna Maria City Pier, a man reported he fell asleep. Upon waking, the angler discovered his three fishing poles and tackle had been stolen. The missing items were valued at $820.

Bradenton Beach

• March 13, 2600 Gulf Drive N., vehicle burglary. A complainant reported someone had entered his unlocked vehicle and ransacked his glove box. Papers from the glove box were scattered and $5 was missing.

• March 17, intersection of Gulf Drive and Cortez Road, domestic battery. A female complainant reported she and her boyfriend had argued over him leaving her in a vehicle “for several hours,” according to the report. As the vehicle arrived at the intersection, the complainant said her boyfriend exited, came around to the passenger’s side, opened the door, grabbed her by the arm and forced her to the ground. He then drove away, leaving her by the roadside. Police contacted the boyfriend, who said he was defending himself because she had been hitting him. Both parties asked to press charges.

• March 16, 403 Highland Ave., fraud. A female complainant arrived at the Bradenton Beach Police Department to report a credit card fraud. The woman said she was in possession of her card, but that it had been used to make a $2,000 shoe purchase. Police advised the woman to immediately cancel the card and they are investigating.

• March 14, 403 Highland Ave., theft. A male complainant arrived at BBPD to report a stolen bicycle. The Sun Beach Cruiser with black handle bars is valued at $80. The complainant said he saw other bicycle thefts reported in the local newspapers and wanted to report the theft in case anyone should see his bicycle.

• March 13, 2600 Gulf Drive N., vehicle burglary. A male complainant reported his vehicle was broken into, but he thought all that had been stolen was a pair of prescription glasses. He later received a call from his bank that a man had attempted to cash one of his checks for $700. When he was denied, the man fled, but left behind the ID. A similar description of the man was provided to police as someone who was walking through the beach parking lot, peering into vehicles. Police later made contact with the suspect, but witnesses were not immediately able to positively ID the man. The investigation continues.

Holmes Beach

• March 13, 700 block Manatee Avenue, battery. Holmes Beach police responded to a road-rage incident where officers were advised by a complainant and two witnesses that they had been cut off in traffic by a driver in a white Sierra pickup. A verbal confrontation ensued, at which time the female suspect allegedly slapped the complainant before driving away. The witnesses had recorded the vehicle tag number and another officer located the suspect on the beach. The suspect denied the incident, but was charged with misdemeanor battery.

• March 13, 500 block of 65th Street, theft. Police made contact with a complainant who reported she sold a boat to a man she had advertised on craigslist.com. The suspect met the complainant at her home, but the engine did not start. She then put a battery charger on it. They completed the transaction for the boat, but the buyer left with the battery charger.

• March 17, 200 block of 66th Street, domestic battery. Police responded to a man and his girlfriend who had questions about the woman’s son, and what they could do about his drug abuse. The mother overheard her son on the phone saying he was earning a lot of money by doing something illegal. After overhearing the conversation, the woman asked her boyfriend to take her out for a drink. The boyfriend stated she had three to four glasses of wine and, while driving home, she shifted the vehicle into park three times while it was moving. While attempting to stop her a fourth time, the boyfriend said she bit him on his right and left forearm. Police observed the bite marks and interviewed the girlfriend, who reported the boyfriend threw her to the ground upon arriving home. Police observed she was intoxicated, and had a large bump on her head. Police interviewed the boyfriend again. He said she had attempted to bite him again and he had pushed her away when she lost her balance and fell. Thus far, the female has been charged with misdemeanor domestic battery.

• March 14, 300 block of 60th Street, theft. A complainant came to HBPD to report an unlocked bicycle stolen from the beach access. The complainant valued the bicycle at $100 and provided a detailed description.

• March 17, 4000 Gulf Drive, Manatee Public Beach, larceny/theft. Police received multiple complaints of stolen property, including cell phones. A third complaint provided a description of two males seen stealing the complainant’s bag. The victims gave chase, but lost the suspects near 38th Street. With a description of the suspects and stolen property, police located the suspects and detained them for identification. The stolen property was recovered and it was determined that the two suspects were juveniles. They admitted to the crimes and were placed under arrest for larceny/theft.

Island police blotter – 03-21-2012

Anna Maria

• March 6, 100 Spring Ave., information. Three employees of the Sandbar Restaurant were working in the kitchen when the kitchen manager ordered another employee to get more plates. The employee left the kitchen without saying anything, at which time the manager is alleged to have thrown a plate at the door where the employee had exited. The plate shattered, but did not strike anyone. A witness reported the incident happened “so fast,” he or she could not verify if it was intentional. The restaurant owner reported the matter was resolved internally. No further action was taken.

• March 13, 100 block of South Bay Boulevard, vehicle burglary. The complainant reported that sometime between March 12 and March 13, someone entered his vehicle through an unlocked door, stealing several items valued at $900.

• March 13, 98 Sycamore Ave., found property. A deputy responded to a call of three kayaks resting unsecured in a bed of sea oats. The responding deputy towed the kayaks to the west end of Pine Avenue, and contacted the Anna Maria public works department. City staff secured the kayaks in storage. The deputy ran the identification numbers of the kayaks, which were neither reported stolen nor registered.

Cortez

• Feb. 27, 12000 block of Yacht Club Place, information. A 15-year-old female was relaxing on her second-floor balcony when she heard one of her dogs begin to bark. Upon looking down, she saw a male suspect fleeing from her garage. The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office was contacted and, according to the report, the juvenile provided the deputy with a possible suspect. The report states the probable suspect was a male, who had verbally threatened the family a week earlier. It did not appear any items were stolen.

• March 8, 12000 block of Cortez Road. A male driver reported he had been driven off the road by another vehicle. He pursued the vehicle to the next stoplight, at which time the suspect put his car in reverse and quickly backed up to the complainant’s vehicle, “as if to hit” him. The suspect then turned off the road and entered the parking lot of the laundromat. The man contacted MSCO to report the incident after taking the suspect’s tag information but, according to the report, the tag number provided did not match the vehicle description. The suspect was not located.

Holmes Beach

• March 10, 4900 Fourth Avenue, drugs. While on patrol, a MSCO deputy observed a red Toyota truck, driven by Phong Dinh of Bradenton, driving aggressively behind other vehicles. Upon attempting a traffic stop, Phong did not immediately stop, according to the report. After several attempts to get Phong to pull over, he finally did, at which time the deputy saw him hunching over the steering wheel, “as if trying to reach under the driver’s seat,” the report said. Backup was called to the scene. The deputy reported on approaching the car that he smelled the odor of burning marijuana. Phong admitted that his license was suspended, and when he reached for his registration in the glove box, the deputy observed a “very large amount of money.” The deputy then observed a knife in the driver’s side door. Phong was asked to exit the vehicle and further investigation revealed that Phong is a habitual traffic offender. The deputy then checked under Phong’s seat and discovered three bags of marijuana and a machete, and a second knife was located in the passenger side door. The deputy also found rolling papers and discovered the license plate on Phong’s vehicle had been reported stolen. The amount of marijuana was determined to be 15.3 grams. Thus far, Phong has been charged with misdemeanor drug and traffic violations.

• March 9, 3600 block of East Bay Drive, petit theft. Police responded to a report of retail theft. A female employee reported a customer had told her he overheard in the parking lot a young man daring his passenger, “take it.” The young man entered the store and ran out with a beer bong in his hand. The store’s video surveillance system captured the theft. A young man wearing a dark tank top, dark shorts and flip-flops was shown entering the store, grabbing the beer bong and running out.

• March 11, 5500 block of Marina Drive, theft. Police responded to a call where the victim reported 70 gallons of fuel had been siphoned from his boat. The estimated value of the fuel was $280. The victim reported he had filled the vessel March 9, left the boat docked, and returned March 11 to discover his fuel gauge was on empty. Fingerprints were secured at the scene.

• March 12, 752 Manatee Ave. W., vehicle burglary. Police responded to a vehicle burglary call at the Kingfish Boat Ramp. The complainant reported that although he had left his vehicle unlocked while out fishing, a rear window had been broken. Several items were reported stolen. Fingerprints were secured at the scene.
