Center court: Second season begins in basketball

Despite the financial crisis at the Anna Maria Island Community Center, it’s business as usual for the sports programs, and the regular youth basketball season has come to a close. The league now turns its attention to the second season — playoffs.

The two-team 8-10 division playoffs will be a replay of the season, but Island Real Estate has hopes of putting together a strong performance to upset first place Beach Bums in the championship game at 6 p.m. Friday, June 6.

The 11-13 division playoffs got started May 31 with a second-versus-third-place matchup. BridgeTender Inn easily raced past Sandbar Restaurant 32-16 to advance to the championship game at 7 p.m. June 6. Michael Latimer led the way for BridgeTender with 13 points and nine rebounds, while Daniel Sentman and Jack Groves added 6 points apiece. Leo Tilelli added 4 points and 11 rebounds, while Jasmine Walsh finished with 2 points in the victory.

Joe Rogers paced Sandbar with 8 points and 12 rebounds, while Brooke Caperelli added 4 points and seven rebounds. Alex Rodriguez and Tuna McCracken completed the scoring for Sandbar with 2 points each in the loss.

The 14-17 playoffs also got underway on May 31. No. 5-seed Heritage Paper Co. took on fourth-seed West Coast Air Condition with the winner set to take on top-seed Beach Bistro June 3. Heritage Paper slipped past WCAC 49-44 behind 21 points and five rebounds from Burke Hill, and 14 points and eight rebounds from Sam Cuva.

Cameron Brauner knocked down a pair of three pointers and finished with 8 points, while Josh Parrish finished with 4 points in the victory.

Lucas Paquin led WCAC with 24 points — all coming from behind the 3-point arc — while Neil Carper nailed two 3-pointers of his own on the way to an 8 point scoring output. Andrew Zink added 5 points and six rebounds and Toni Spurduto finished with 4 points for West Coast in the loss.

The second game of the day saw second-seed Dips Ice Cream take on third-seed Walter & Associates with the winner advancing to the finals.

Dips rolled to an easy 56-36 victory over Walter in the semifinal game behind 30 points and nine rebounds from Christian Hampton and 13 points, eight rebounds and five assists from Josh Ruckteshell. Connor Field and Edward Cullinan added 4 points each, while Lucan Heffernan finished with 3 points in the victory.

Phil Rottes scored 9 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, while Seth Walter and Jack Walter scored 8 points each to lead Walter & Associates in the loss. Seth Walter also contributed a game-high 12 rebounds. Chris Lehman added 7 points, while Collin Moore and Lane Burnett completed the scoring with 2 points each.

The Feast earned its first victory on the season during May 27 action, edging Island Gourmet 66-61 behind 23 points and six rebounds from Antwann Jackson and 13 points from Cameron Kawcak. Ricky Tyrell added 10 points for Feast, which also received 9 points from Jonathan Ely and 5 points and 11 rebounds from Zach Scheild in the victory.

Island Gourmet was led by Scott Elisio and Craig Burns, who finished with 23 points each. Justin Jones and Brandon Kerns each added 4 points in the loss.

Duncan remained unbeaten thanks to a 77-74 victory over the Sun behind 24 points and seven rebounds from Jordan Demers, and 19 points, nine rebounds and nine assists from Ray Gardner. Jonathan Moss added 11 points, while Tom Heald finished with 8 points and 10 rebounds.

Sean Hubbard’s 24 points and 11 rebounds led the Sun, which also received 22 points and 7 rebounds from Jason Mican and 14 points and 10 rebounds from Eric Gledhill in the loss.

Brandon Kern made six 3-pointers on the way to a game-high 28 points to lead Bug Guys past Gator Man Pools 47-36 in the final game of the night. Andrew Turman added 9 points and eight rebounds for the Bug Guys, which also received 6 points from Matt Dwyer and 4 points from Alban Gega in the victory.
