Clear waters hide underwater frustrations

Work progresses July 6 on the second, middle pier during construction of a three-pier erosion control project on Cortez Beach, near 10th Street South in Bradenton Beach. Completion of the project, which began March 2015, is again being delayed, this time until August. A report from the Manatee County Parks and Natural Resources Department says difficulties securing foundation pilings for the third pier and setbacks from Tropical Storm Colin caused the delay. Kiosk promotes turtle safety

Holmes Beach code enforcement officer JT Thomas points to a new kiosk at Holmes Beach City Hall, 5801 Marina Drive. The display is on loan from the Sea Turtle Conservancy to demonstrate Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission-approved lighting. Suzi Fox, executive director of Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch and Shorebird Monitoring, said, “The STC is loaning AMITW this display for a year because they are so impressed with the success of our turtle safety program.” Islander Photo: Kathy Prucnell
