A St. Petersburg woman was rescued Sept. 28 from the water near the Sunshine Skyway Bridge and rushed by boat to Galati Yacht Sales in Anna Maria for transportation to the hospital.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, which patrols the north side of the bridge, reported that Dorothe Kadane, 85, jumped from a low section of the southwest side of Sunshine Skyway, falling about 25 feet.
The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, however, reported that Kadane waded in the water near the Sunshine Skyway pier, possibly seeking to drown herself.
The U.S. Coast Guard rescued Kadane from the water at about 10 a.m. Friday morning about three miles from Anna Maria Island.
A Coast Guard crew took Kadane to the Galati dock at about 11 a.m., where Coast Guard and Emergency Medical Services personnel, as well as MCSO deputies, assisted her. Kadane was then taken by ambulance to Blake Medical Center in Bradenton as a precaution, with no visible signs of physical injury, according to HCSO public information officer Debbie Carter.
MCSO deputies took Kadane into custody under the Baker Act, a Florida statute that allows law enforcement personnel to detain for medical evaluation those who may be a threat to themselves or others.
Kadane entered the water at about the same time another woman, in an apparently unrelated incident, jumped from the Skyway Bridge.
Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office deputies received a report at about 7:20 a.m. that a woman jumped 197 feet from the center span to the water. Detectives found a Toyota parked near the center span and inside they found a note.
The body of Maggie Dennis, 44, of Tampa, was found on some rocks under the bridge.
There have been 43 suicides from the Sunshine Skyway Bridge since 2002, and three suicide attempts, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.
