Swiftmud cites Anna Maria improvements

Anna Maria city engineer Tom Wilcox told the city commission at its Jan. 22 meeting that Phase One of the city’s master stormwater drainage plan is about a week away from completion.

The Southwest Florida Water Management District, which has final approval, has a different outlook.

In a Feb. 3 letter to Mayor Fran Barford and city officials, Swiftmud engineer Steve Lopes said that during a “routine construction inspection” the district staff observed 16 “deviations” in the construction from the Swiftmud permitted plans.

Barford said she has discussed the Swiftmud letter with Wilcox, public works director George McKay and contractor Adkins Construction and its engineer.

“We’re on top of it,” the mayor said. “A lot of these are just minor procedures, but we’re working with Swiftmud on resolving all of them.”

While efforts to reach Lopes for comment were unsuccessful, an official at Swiftmud’s Fort Myers office said such deficiencies are not unusual in drainage projects.
