Bradenton Beach man busted for pointing handgun

Ashton J. Stevens

A 21-year-old man who became upset over "degrading" remarks made about him, pulled a handgun and threatened his "friends."

Ashton Stevens of Second Street North, Bradenton Beach, was arrested Thursday, Feb. 7, 2008, after he obtained a handgun from his father's residence and pointed it at his roommate and the roommate's girlfriend. The girlfriend apparently said some hurtful things to Stevens.

Bradenton Beach Police Officer Roy Joslin reported that Stevens became involved in a verbal altercation with his roommate, Jimmy Brainard and Brainard's girlfriend, Jackie Stump. The altercation was over the girl "talking down" to Stevens, "making him feel rejected."

Stevens became angry, went across the street to his father's residence and obtained a .32-caliber handgun, then returned to his apartment. When Brainard exited the bathroom, Stevens removed the gun from his pocket, pointed it at Brainard and asked him why his girlfriend said "those degrading things" to him.

According to the police report, the girl then exited the bathroom and Stevens turned the gun on Stump and asked her the same thing.

Stevens then pointed the gun at the floor, entered his bedroom and the roommate and his girlfriend left the apartment and called police.

When police arrived, Stevens was arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a firearm.
