West Coast Air keeps Rotten Ralph's cooled off

Early on, it appeared that the Feb. 9 game between Anna Maria Island Community Center Basketball League Premier Division foes West Coast Air Conditioning and Rotten Ralph's would be a close one. WCAC battled hard for a 5-4 lead with just over 40 seconds left to play in the second quarter. A baseline jumper followed by a steal and a layup by West Coast Air's Matt Bauer changed all of that in a hurry.
The first quarter ended with WCAC holding a 9-4 lead that quickly extended to 16-5 midway through the second quarter on baskets by Chandler Hardy, Whitney Bauer and Matt Bauer, along with one free throw from Michael Kirby.
Rotten Ralph's Cory Stickler scored on an offensive rebound to temporarily stem the 7-point WCAC run, but a baseline drive by Matt Bauer restored West Coast's 11-point lead. Rotten Ralph's last gasp at getting back into the game came when Celia Ware drove the lane for two and followed with a steal and a three-pointer to pull Ralph's to 18-12 with just over a minute to play in the half.
West Coast Air Conditioning closed the half with a 6-0 run on baskets by Kyle Parsons, Kirby and Matt Bauer to take a 24-12 lead into the half.
Rotten Ralph's got no closer than nine points the rest of the way as West Coast Air Conditioning improved to 6-0 on the season with the 47-31 win. Matt Bauer led the way with 18 points and 12 rebounds, while sister Whitney added eight points and seven rebounds. Parsons finished with four points, while Troy Koszewski and Chandler Hardy each added four points to the scoreboard. Kirby completed the scoring for West Coast Air with five points and 10 rebounds.
Ware led the way for Rotten Ralph's with 15 points, while Stickler and Joe Karasiewicz finished with seven and six points respectively. Daniel Janisch added three points and seven rebounds as Rotten Ralph's fell to 1-6 on the season.
On Feb. 6, 14 points from Matt Bauer and 13 from Michael Kirby led West Coast Air Conditioning 39-34 past Connect Cycles. Whitney Bauer added five points and Chandler Hardy scored four points to complete the West Coast scoring in the victory.
Connect Cycles was led by Kyle Aritt's 14 points and 9 points from Tommy Price. Zach Evans completed the Connect Cycles scoring with 4 points.
Rotten Ralph's 33, Island Real Estate 28
On Feb. 4, Celia Ware and Cory Stickler scored 13 points apiece to lead Rotten Ralph's to a 33-28 win over Island Real Estate and their first victory on the season. Olivia Moore and Daniel Janisch completed the Ralph's scoring with six points and one point respectively.
Jamison Urch led Island Real Estate with 17 points, while Nash Thompson hit a pair of three pointers to finish with six points. Blake Rivers completed the IRE scoring with five points in the loss.
Island Lumber drew a game closer to the top of the Division I standings thanks to a 33-19 victory over first-place Sun on Feb. 7. Becca Butler led the way with 13 points, while Joey Garbus added eight points. Dayle Hoffman, Wyatt Hoffman and Chris Pate each finished with four points to complete the Island Lumber scoring.
Julian Botero's 10 points and six points from Connor Field paced the Sun in the loss.
On Feb. 6, Emily White dominated the low post, leading the Sun 31-28 past Air & Energy. Connor Field scored seven points, Patrick Edwards had six points and Julian Botero finished with 4 points to complete the Sun scoring in the victory.
Daniel Pimental's 10 points led the way for Air & Energy, which also received four points apiece from Sarah Asmi, Travis Belsito and Justin Gargett in the loss.
On Feb. 5. Island Lumber rolled over A Paradise Realty 28-16 behind 11 points from Becca Butler and seven points from Chris Pate. Wyatt Hoffman added six points for Island Lumber, which also received two points apiece from Joey Garbus and Zach Guerin in the victory.
Jack Titsworth, Savannah Schield and Max Miller scored four points apiece to lead A Paradise in the loss.
Kumon edged Dips 16-13 in Division II basketball action on Feb. 8 to move into first place behind 10 points from Anna Maria Galati. Chris Galati added four points and Mathew Franklin scored two points to complete the scoring for Kumon.
Five points from Daniel Schroaeder and four points from Blaine Jenefsky paced Dips, which also received two points apiece from Josh Zawistoski and JJ DeSouza in the loss.
On Feb. 5, Dips Ice Cream rode a balanced scoring attack to record an easy victory over Jessie's Island Store 28-7. Henry Bernet and Blaine Jenefsky scored eight points apiece to lead Dips, which also received six points apiece from Daniel Schroaeder and Josh Zawistoski in the victory.
Three points from Keegan Murphy and two points apiece from Joely Hernandez and Jake Parsons paced the scoring for Jessie's in the loss.
Chase Lewis poured in eight points to lead Duncan Real Estate past Coastal Orthopedic 16-11 in Feb. 8 Division III basketball action. Joe Class, Mikayla Kane, Brandon Mills and Lauren Sapienza completed the Duncan scoring with two points apiece.
Leo Tilelli scored four points and Mikey Ellsworth added three points to lead Coastal Orthopedic, whcih also received two points apiece from Alexia Yavalar and Alex Salinas in the loss.
On Feb. 7, Chase Lewis scored eight points to lead Duncan Real Estate past Ross Built 13-8. Lauren Sapienza and Mikayla Kane scored two points each and Natasha Kieckoski added one point in the victory.
Ross Built was led by six points from Jake Ross and two points from George Lardas in the loss.
On Feb. 6, Emma Moneuse and Lucas Winstead led a furious second-half rally to cinch LPAC's 8-7 victory over Beach Bistro. The restaurateurs built a 6-0 first-half lead behind four points from Gavin Sentman and two points from Nicole Sewall. Unfortunately, Beach Bistro managed only one more point on a free throw by Seth Walter, while Moneuse and Winstead were scoring four points apiece down the stretch to key the LPAC victory.
Debbie Rhodes partnered with Jay Disbrow to defeat the team of Bob Lee and Vince Bonofiglio 21-16 to win the Feb. 6 horseshoe competition at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Thirty-one hopefuls started the day, with five teams emerging from pool play action. Lee and Bonofiglio advanced to the final by defeating walker Adin Shank by a 22-12 margin. Shank earned his opportunity by defeating Rod Bussey and Herb Puryear 22-20 in the first eliminator. Rhodes and Disbrow advanced to the final on the strength of a 21-14 victory over the team of Leo Hutton and Bob Mason.
The Feb. 2 games saw Norm Good and Jay Disbrow edge Tom Rhodes and John Crawford by a 21-19 score to earn the day's bragging rights.
Play gets under way at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. followed by random team selection. There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.
Key Royale golf news
The Key Royale Club men played an 18-hole, best-ball-of-foursome tourney on Feb. 6 at the Key Royale Club golf course. The team of Dale Hudson, Vince Fanton, Bob Landgren and Ernie Hauser torched the par 64 with a 47. That's 17-under par for the math-challenged. Second place went to the team of Bob Doos, Nub Turner, John Heiselman and Jim Hilgison with 49. Alone in third place with a score of 51 was the team of Danny Williams, John Williamson, Jim Yates and Greg Harris.
The men played nine holes on Feb. 3 in a better-ball-of-foursome contest. This format produced a two-way tie for first place between the team of Bob Lamp, Bob Sayles, Al Gunn and Jerry Micho, which carded the same score of 9-under-par 23 as Hugh Holmes, Dale Hudson, Dick Eichorn and Dick Rowse. Second place went to the team of Joe Dickinson, Charles Krauss, Al Kaiser and Wade LaDue with 8-under 24.
The Feb. 1 mixed scramble saw Mitzi Vikingstad, Barbara Lindhall, Bob Schuetz and Charlie Reed shoot a net 20 to win by .8 of a stroke over the second-place team of Teresa Schutt, Terry Westby, Dave Kruger and Peter Thomassen.
