Anna Maria man dies in boating mishap

Henry W. Hicks, 59, of Anna Maria and Tampa, apparently drowned April 27, in a boating accident near Egmont Key, 3 miles west of Anna Maria Island.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers are investigating the incident, which occurred around 4 p.m.

An FWC press release said Hicks was with other people aboard a 27-foot Black Watch named Bad Habit. He reportedly fell into the water while attempting to raise the anchor. His body was recovered by people on the boat.

The FWC said the incident is being investigated as a “possible drowning.” An autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death.

Hicks was a Tampa attorney who purchased a home on Lakeview Drive in Anna Maria in 2010, Manatee County property records show.

According to the website for his practice, he was admitted to the Florida Bar in 1979 and entered private practice in 1981, forming the Law Office of Henry W. Hicks, P.A. He enjoyed a varied legal career involving business law, corporations, commercial real estate, liens, probate and trusts and more.

He was a member of the Florida Bar Association, Real Estate Trust and Probate Section, Hillsborough County Bar Association and Bay Area Real Estate Council.
