Red tide in Southwest Florida

A bloom of the Florida red tide organism, Karenia brevis, persisted in Southwest Florida the week ending Aug. 17.

  1. brevis was observed at low to high concentrations in samples collected in Manatee County, background to low concentrations in Pinellas County, background to high concentrations in Sarasota County, very low to high concentrations in Charlotte County, background to high concentrations in Lee County, and background to high concentrations in Collier County.

FWC said it continued to receive reports of fish kills from Manatee, Sarasota, Charlotte, Lee and Collier counties.

Respiratory irritation also was reported, including in Manatee Coquina at Coquina Beach.
