They defeated the Space Coast Hurricanes 10-0 in their first match and followed that up with a 13-0 win over the Tampa Bay Junior Lightning. The Flames also defeated the Palm Beach Predators 6-0 and the Space Coast Hurricanes 9-0 before winning the title with a 4-0 over the Orlando Stars in the finals.
In addition to winning the state title, the Flames also put together an undefeated regular season. Next up for Facheris and his mates is a chance to win the Southeastern District title in Charleston, S.C., March 13-16. If they win there, they’ll compete for the national title in New Jersey in April.
Congratulations and good luck to Zachary and his teammates!
Island baseball starts up
The Islanders Little League major’s division team got off to a great start in their March 3 Little League game at G.T. Bray Park in Bradenton. They jumped out to a 5-0 lead against Cooney’s Auto that they held onto until the fourth inning, but the final score was Cooney 14, Islanders 5. The Islanders saw some nice pitching from Lee Bergeron, who allowed three runs in three innings of work.
Hunter Parrish got it going for the Islanders when he led off the game with a single and moved to second when Bergeron walked. Max Moneuse singled in Parrish in front of Derek Gargett, who doubled home Bergeron and Moneuse. Gargett and Garrison Clark who reached base when he got plunked by a pitch also came around to score.
But Cooney’s Auto came back - thanks to some big bats - led by Munoz, who went 4-for-5 including a pair of doubles. Grasso was 4-for-4 with three runs, while Butler added a pair of singles and two runs scored in the victory.
