Center to host NFL competition for youngsters
The Anna Maria Island Community Center is hosting a local NFL Pepsi, Punt, Pass and Kick competition for all boys and girls ages 8-15 at the Holmes Beach field on Saturday, July 14.
There is no cost to enter the contest, which will get started at 10 a.m. Participants may register anytime between now and the event date at the Center trailer behind St. Bernard Catholic Church or at the Holmes Beach field at 9:30 a.m. on the day of the contest.
Contestants will test their skills in punting, passing and kicking a football with scores awarded based on distance and accuracy. Winners of the local contest will advance to sectionals at a time and place to be announced. Top finishers from sectionals will advance to the team championship level and compete for a chance for the national title at halftime of an NFL playoff game in January.
For more information, contact athletic director Andy Jonatzke at 778-1908.
The team of Steve Doyle and George McKay joined Phil Findley and Ron Pepka as the only teams to emerge with perfect 3-0 pool play records during the June 30 horseshoe proceedings. Though the two teams played for the title, Findley and Pepka ran roughshod over Doyle and McKay by a 21-0 score.
The July 4, midweek horseshoe competition again saw Pepka in the finals, this time as a walker, or team of one. Pepka took on John Johnson and Ron Slagh in the finals, but came up on the short end of a 21-10 score.
Play gets under way at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. followed by random team selection. There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.
