Final results for Island, county primary election

Voters Tuesday once again turned down a proposal by West Manatee Fire & Rescue officials to initiate a property tax to supplement revenue.

And Bradenton Beach electors rejected the concept of having a city manager form of government.

The fire district proposal, which would have allowed up to 1.0 mill property assessment but which officials said would only be about half that amount, failed 3,921 to 3,873.

In Bradenton Beach, the city manager vote was 165 no, 134 yes.

In other Bradenton Beach charter proposals, voters approved a charter change to limit building height to no more than 29 feet above the Federal Emergency Management Agency base for the first floor of living space. The vote was 224 yes, 78 no.

A charter amendment requiring a "supra-majority" of city commissioners - four out of the five, rather than a simple majority of three - to approve comprehensive plan changes, rezonings, variances and other land-use changes, also passed, 187 to 112.

And the final charter proposal, which prohibits the city commission from selling or vacating any water access passed, 247 to 54.

For Manatee County Commission, District 7, an at-large district including Anna Maria Island, incumbent commissioner Joe McClash bested challenger Joe Hampton with nearly 64 percent of the vote, 27,172 to 15,396 votes.

In the race for judge in the 12th Judicial Circuit, including Manatee, Sarasota and Desoto counties, Diana Moreland and Susan Chapman will be in a runoff on the November ballot because Moreland, the vote leader, did not earn 51 percent of the vote. The tallies were Moreland, 44,075, Chapman, 31,426, William G. Salomone, 8,442 votes, and Michael Mosca with 16,283 votes.

In the countywide vote for two school board seats, incumbent Harry Kinnan beat out challenger Dave Miner, with 55 percent of the vote, 23,696 votes to Miner’s 19,076, for the district 2 seat. In district 4, incumbent Frank Brunner won out over challenger  James Ferguson, 24,001 to 17,742 votes.
