11th hole odds?
Tony Webb, left, a 10-year resident of Holmes Beach, spends summers in his home town of North East, Pa., and he and high school buddy Jeff Southwick play golf at the North Hills Golf Club in Corry. Both of them have played golf for 50 years. Three weeks ago, while Webb was back in Holmes Beach, Southwick got his first hole-in-one with a 3-wood on the 11th hole, a 190-yard, par 3. They played North Hills a week later in a fivesome and, at the 11th hole, Tony said, "So this is the hole you aced. One of my buddies in Alaska just had his first ace, and I wonder if I’ll ever get one." Tony stepped up to the tee box, pulled out a 3-wood, struck it solidly, and the ball went over a creek, narrowly missing a tree, landed on the front of the green, and rolled 30 feet to the pin and in the cup. His jaw dropped. What are the odds that two friends would get a hole-in-one at the same hole two weeks apart? |
Island resident Webb Cutting teamed up with son Craig Cutting and Mary
and Gary Rutledge to fire a 14-under-par 57 to capture
first place in the third annual Her-icane Golf Challenge at the Bradenton
Country Club Sept. 8. They won trophies, a Cherry’s gift bag and
a certificate for a foursome to play the Bradenton Country Club again.
Webb,
who is reigning club champion of the Key Royale Club,
and his teammates finished three shots ahead of three teams that carded
60s. Through a tiebreaker, the team of Bob McEnroe, Jamie Brown, Lance
Cowart and Bob Long took second place and won a certificate for a foursome
to play Waterlefe Golf Club. Third place went to the team of Jeff Watts,
Wayne Johnson and Bob Lighters, who took home a certificate for a foursome
to Riverstrand Golf and Country Club.
Most honest golfers award (last place) went
to the team of Scott O’Brien, Ellen Scott, Marcia Rush and Rich Lefevre
with a score of 79. They each received new ball retrievers and a foursome certificate
to Pinebrooke Ironwood.
Former islander Wayne Wood won the straightest-drive
contest, while Greg Koeper and Jim Diedrich won the
closest-to-the-pin contests.
The
tournament was a rousing success for the Manatee Her-icane
soccer program, raising slightly more than $8,000 for tournament travel,
uniforms and much-needed team equipment.
A big thanks to all who participated
in the tournament and all the businesses that sponsored
holes and donated raffle items. A special thanks has to go out to the
Watts, Rice, Bouziane and Rubino families, who went above and beyond
the call of duty to ensure a successful tournament.
