The Rev. Andrew Parker Bateman Allis Sr. 
The Rev. Fr. Dr. Canon Andrew Parker Bateman Allis Sr., known to many as Park, died Sept. 10, at the age of 76.
The Rev. Allis was a caring person and Episcopalian minister who worked hard to make a difference in the lives of many in his community. He ministered to the impoverished, smuggled Bibles into Communist East Berlin, preached to astronauts, trained on Skid Row in Chicago, and in Sheffield’s Pitsmore, enlisted 1,000 volunteers in shadow times following the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.
He was born Feb. 27, 1938, in Mansfield, Pennsylvania, to Leo Allis and Eva Bateman.
He was married to social worker Pauline Ann Middleton Allis of Brighouse, England, for 33 years, from 1979 until her death in May 2012. They met in 1978, while he was studying inner-city ministry at the Urban Theology Unit in Sheffield.
In 1960, he graduated from Mansfield State College with a bachelor’s degree in education. In 1962, he attended U.S. Navy Chaplains School in Newport, Rhode Island. In 1963, he completed seminary at Virginia Theological Seminary and was ordained as a priest in 1964 by the bishop of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. In 1975, he received a master’s in church management from the Graduate Theological Foundation in Indiana.
In 1983, the Rev. Allis received a master’s in liberal studies with a focus on psychology and sociology from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. In 1986, he earned a doctorate in ministry focusing on clergy wellness from the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary.
He was a lifelong learner who advocated for continuing clergy education and women’s rights throughout the world.
He was an Episcopal priest for 50 years, from 1964-14. In 1964, he became the minister at St. James Church in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. In 1967, he became canon pastor at Christ Church Cathedral in Houston. Starting in 1969, he was the minister of St. Marks Church in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, and, 1975-78, he worked in community outreach and urban ministry at the Wilkinsburg Community Ministry. From 1978-1986, he was minister at St. Peters Episcopal Church in Pittsburgh. From 1986-1994, he was the minister at St. James Episcopal Church in Woonsocket, Rhode Island. Finally, he was the chaplain at the State College of Florida from 1994-2000.
The Rev. Allis retired in 2000 and resided in Bradenton and Carrboro, North Carolina. He was a longtime member of the Episcopal Church of the Annunciation and considered the Holmes Beach church, where he spent many afternoons and evenings, to be his home parish.
At the time of his death, the Rev. Allis was planning a visit to Brighouse, England, to see his father-in-law, Donald Middleton, and then planning to move to Berkeley, California, to be closer to his son, Ryan.
A celebration of life service in his honor will be held at 4 p.m. Nov. 23 at the Episcopal Church of the Annunciation, with a reception to follow.

The Rev. Allis is survived by sons Andrew P. B. Allis Jr. of New York City and Ryan P. M. Allis of San Francisco and siblings Joe Allis, Tom Allis and Martha Kiely.
Thelma Estes Bishop
Thelma Estes Bishop, of Anna Maria Island and Cascade, Michigan, died July 23, at the age of 99.
She was a member of Cascade Christian Church.
A service will be held Oct. 11 in the chapel of the Cascade Christian Church in Cascade, Michigan, with visitation one hour before the service.
She is survived by her son, Brian and wife Lynne Estes of Cascade; daughter Karen Franchi of Cascade; Leann Kenney of Bradenton; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Bonny Cloud
Bonny Cloud, 63, of Bradenton and formerly of Anna Maria, died Sept. 18.
She was born June 15, 1951, in Ohio and moved to Florida in 1967. She lived on Anna Maria Island for 10 years and then moved to Bradenton. The water and the beach provided her peace.
A celebration of life service will be held at a later date. Brown & Sons Funeral Homes & Crematory 43rd Street Chapel, Bradenton, is in charge of arrangements.

Richard Gatehouse
Richard Gatehouse, 63, of Bradenton Beach, died Sept. 23.
He was a 23-year resident of Bradenton Beach. He worked for the city of Bradenton Beach as its Web administrator and also served as Ward 3 city commissioner.
He also had been a volunteer member of a city mooring field committee and the board of adjustment.
Mr. Gatehouse was a retired merchant marine, and spent more than two decades working in the dredging industry.
In an interview with The Islander in 2011, he described himself as a “renaissance man,” working as a tugboat master, website designer and junk hauler.
He sought a vacant seat on the commission when no one else from his ward stepped forward to run for the office, saying it was a citizen’s duty to serve.
Mr. Gatehouse also was a member of the Sarasota and St. Petersburg chapters of Harley Owners Group. Riding motorcycles was his hobby, and the charities he for were important to him.
“Mostly I like to do it for the kids,” he said of riding for charities.

The city lowered its U.S. flag Sept. 23-26 to half mast in honor of Mr. Gatehouse’s service to the city.
Hector Mamedrano
Hector Mamedrano, 57, of Holmes Beach, died Sept. 26.
Mr. Mamedrano was employed by Holmes Construction Co. and D.Coy Ducks Tavern, both in Holmes Beach. He served many years as the maintenance man for the Island Shopping Center, where he put up the Christmas lights every year and was well liked by the merchants.
No service was planned at presstime.
Stephen Normand
Stephen Normand, 47, who grew up in Holmes Beach, has died.
Mr. Normand graduated from Manatee High School in 1984 and received a double bachelor’s degree and two master’s certificates at USF in Tampa, where he taught English composition but was unable to complete his doctorate due to illness.
In 2007, Mr. Normand returned to Holmes Beach to manage his mother’s store, Island Mail & More, when she was severely injured and unable to work for several months. He later returned to the Bradenton area to continue to assist in the store and where he made many friends.
Mr. Normand was multi-talented. He spoke seven languages and was a teacher, a singer, a dj/kj (known as sasha), an artist, a twice-retired ballroom dance champion, a computer expert and a devoted son and brother. He also was his family’s expert on ancestry, and kept in touch with family members throughout the country.
A celebration of life will be held at Holmes Beach City Hall, 5801 Marina Drive, Holmes Beach, at 2 pm Oct. 2. The funeral will be held at King David Memorial Cemetery in Falls Church, Virginia, where his grandparents rest.
Mr. Normand is survived by his mother, Sue Normand of Holmes Beach; sister, Lisa Normand of Washington, D.C., his closest aunt Eleanor Grossman of Alexandria, Virginia, and numerous close cousins, aunts and uncles, and many dear friends.
