Summer vacation, indoor soccer season wind down
Summer vacation is winding down, and that results in a close out for the Anna Maria Island Community Center indoor soccer league. The league is entering the last week or so of regular play and the teams are hoping for a late push to secure the coveted top seed and the bye into the finals that comes with it.
In the 8-10 division, West Coast Air Conditioning has the top seed all but locked up with a 6-0 record. Signarama with one victory and the 0-5 Beach Bums look like they will meet in the first round of playoffs.
It’s more of the same in the 11-13 division with Bark Real Estate holding down the top spot with a 5-0 record. Sugar Beach Digital at 2-4 still has a mathematical chance to overtake Bark, but it will take some help from The Feast which follows at 1-4.
Wash Family Construction controls its destiny in the 14-17 division with a 4-1 record, but 2-4 Salty Printing and 2-3 LaPensee Plumbing could overtake Wash for the division, so stay tuned.
Last week was a light week as far as game action.
West Coast continued its dominance in the 8-10 division with a 4-0 win over Beach Bums July 28 behind a hat trick from Jeremiah Sculco. Peyton Harlan completed the West Coast scoring with one goal in the victory.
Bark Real Estate followed with a hard-fought 4-1 victory over The Feast in an 11-13 division game. The two teams battled to a scoreless first half thanks to a great performance from goalie Thomas Fellowes.
Bark Real Estate finally got things going in the second half behind two goals from Gavin Walker and a goal each from Preston Walker and David Daigle. Conal Cassidy scored the lone goal for The Feast in the loss.
July 29 saw West Coast continue its quest for a perfect season with a 5-2 victory over Signarama. Peyton Harlan and Jeremiah Sculco scored two goals each, while Mikey Bowes added one goal in the victory. Mikey Coleman and Julian Lazzara scored one goal each for Signarama.
The second game of the evening saw Bark Real Estate edge Sugar Beach Digital 7-5 behind four goals from Preston Walker. Brother Gavin Walker added two goals for Bark, which also received one goal from German Riveria in the win.
Brock Soletti’s two goals led Sugar Beach, which also received goals in the loss from Tyler Brewer, Yukio Kuroiwa and James Richards.
The center is at 407 Magnolia Ave., Anna Maria.
Adult football continues
Though the summer adult flag football league at the Anna Maria Island Community Center has completed only its third week of action on the center field, Miller Electric Lions have established themselves as an early favorite.
They won both of their games in the past week, recording a 27-18 victory over Slim’s Place Eagles July 29 before edging Sugar Beach Digital Cowboys 14-12 July 30 to run the Slim’s record to a league-best 5-0. That puts them two games ahead of Anna Maria Vacation Dolphins, Tyler’s Ice Cream Vikings and Poppo’s Taqueria 49ers, all sitting at 3-2. Slim’s Place Eagles, Sugar Beach Digital Cowboys and Sato Real Estate Giants all follow at 2-3, while Jessie’s Island Store Fighting Irish is looking for its first victory.
Other action July 29 saw Sato Real Estate ease past Tyler’s Ice Cream by a 25-14 score. Sugar Beach Digital followed with a 34-19 victory over Jessie’s Island Store, and Poppo’s Taqueria closed out July 29 action with a 23-13 victory over Anna Maria Vacations.
The following night saw Tyler’s emphatically rebound with a 46-18 victory over Poppo’s, while Sato defeated Slim’s 27-8 for a second win on the week. Anna Maria Vacations recorded a 38-26 victory over Jessie’s Island Store for its third win of the season and Miller Electric edged Sugar Beach Digital 14-12 to run its record to a league-best 5-0 behind a great all-around performance from Ray Gardner, the center’s youth sports manager.
Gardner scored two touchdowns and a pair of extra points in a performance that included a game-high 75 yards rushing on four carries, while also completing nine of 15 passes for 105 yards.
Craig Doher had four catches for 26 yards, Alex Hamphill had four for 28, and Eric Gledhill finished with one catch for 30 yards.
Don Purvis completed seven of 13 passes for 115 yards and two touchdown passes, one to Brent Laudicina that went for a 50-yard score. Chris Cicharo added one touchdown reception and finished with three catches for 40 yards in the loss.
Horseshoe news
Horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits saw only five players July 29 due to inclement weather. Tim Sofran was the out-right winner as a walker.
On Aug.1, Hank Huyghe and Tim Sofran were the winners among three competing teams.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. Wednesday and Saturday, barring inclement weather, at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. followed by random team selection. There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.
