Eyes on the road

The Florida Department of Transportation is working to improve State Road 789/Gulf Drive/East Bay Drive in Holmes Beach.

The contractor, LAS Contracting Corp., is working on the road from 27th Street to State Road 64/Manatee Avenue. Improvements include sidewalk construction, new trolley shelters, drainage work, traffic signals and signage and pavement markings.

Motorists should expect daytime lane closures and flagging operations 9 a.m.-4 p.m. while crews are working through the fall.

The DOT also issued these alerts:

SR 789 from SR 684/Cortez Avenue West northbound to SR 64: Various locations will close 9 a.m.-4 p.m. through Friday, Oct. 2, for crews to connect existing power lines to new power poles.

SR 789 from south of Cortez Road to Third Street North in Bradenton Beach: Crews are reconstructing a driveway. Expect intermittent southbound lane closures 9 a.m.-4 p.m. through Friday, Oct. 2.

SR 64 from 77th Street West to 59th Street West in Bradenton: Crews are installing highway lighting and constructing sidewalks. Expect lane closures 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.-7 a.m. Expected completion is late 2015.

Also, be on alert to the posted speed limits on Anna Maria Island, especially in Holmes Beach, where the police department is testing limits of 25 mph.
