Center sports: LaPensee wears adult basketball crown
LaPensee Plumbing ground out a 40-38 victory over Gatorman Pools in the championship game of the adult basketball league at The Center of Anna Maria Island.
A week after putting up 85 points in their semifinal win over Miller Electric, LaPensee had to adjust to a more defensive-oriented game against a stronger opponent in No. 2 seed Gatorman Pools. LaPensee had only one player score in double figures, but achieved at least 6 points from five of its seven players.
The championship game was close from start to finish. LaPensee led 22-20 at halftime behind 6 points from Shawn Hubbard and 4 points from Brandon Osmond, while Gatorman stayed close thanks to 7 points from Dale Smith and 6 points from Aaron Dudukes.
LaPensee held on for the 2-point victory thanks in part to Jordan Demers, who scored his 6 points in the decisive second half. Dudukes kept Gatorman close with 7 points, but they fell just short.
Hubbard paced LaPensee with 10 points, while Osmond finished with 8 points. Demers, Jonathan Moss and Ryan Burke finished with 6 points each in the victory. Other members of the champs are Sam Hooker and Mike Scapondra, who finished with 2 points each.
Dudukes led all scorers with 13 points and Smith finished with 11 points to lead Gatorman, which also received 7 points from Scott Elisio in the loss.
Horseshoe news
The team of Ed Bergles and Art Kingstad were the only players to manage a 3-0 pool play record and were the day’s outright champs during Nov. 25 horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits.
The Nov. 28 games saw two teams advance to the knockout stage. The team of Herb Puryear and Dom Livedoti edged the team of Tim Sofran and Neil Hennessey 22-20 to earn bragging rights for the day.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the city pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. followed by random team selection. There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.
Key Royale golf news
The beautiful fall weather of the past week brought out the golfers at the Key Royale Club, except, of course, on Thanksgiving — a quiet day for the club.
The men were out twice Nov. 23, starting with a morning match of two best balls per foursome. The team of Bill Shuman, Dennis Schavey, Ron Pritchard and Pete Weir carded a 9-under-par 55, which was matched by the team of Hank Tremblay, Chet Hutton, Jim Auch and the team of Lance Lindeman, Bill Gallagher, Don LaTorre and Dave Kruger to complete a three-way tie for first place.
The afternoon saw the men out for a nine-hole modified-Stableford System or quota points match.
Barry Izzard posted a plus-4 for best individual score of the day, while Ken Rickett came in second with a plus-2.
Izzard and Rickett teamed up with Bill Lowman and Dick Mills for best team score at plus-2.
The club women took over the course Nov. 23 for a nine hole individual-low-net-in-flights match that included a “turkeys” game — a challenge to card three of the same scores in a row.
A six-way tie for “turkeys” was broken by Roxannce Koche, who had the winning score on three consecutive holes.
Mary Lou Dreier took first place in Flight A with a 1-over-par 33, two strokes ahead of second-place finisher Brenda Solleveld.
Marcia Helgeson’s 5-under-par 27 was the round of the day and put her in first among Flight B players. Sue Little carded a 2-under-par 30 to finish in second place.
Penny Williams fired a 3-under-par 29 to grab the top spot in Flight C, while Beth Lindeman took second place with an even-par 32.
Trish Kruger and Markie Ksiazek both carded 1-over-par 33 to tie for first place in Flight D. Gloria LaTorre was one stroke back in second place.
New flag football season starts
Registration for the 2016 youth flag football season is underway at The Center of Anna Maria Island.
For members, registration is included in the annual fee, although there is a $5 processing fee. The cost for non-members is $120. Fees must be paid at time of registration.
Mandatory player evaluations are at the following dates and times.
• Ages 5-7 and 8-10, 6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 7.
• Ages 11-13 and 14-17, 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 8.
Teams will be formed following the player evaluations and competition will begin the week of Jan. 11. The season ends in mid-March.
The Center is seeking volunteer coaches and team sponsors.
