Flag football season kicks off at Center
The first week of the youth flag football season is in the books after a bevy of games were played in four age divisions at The Center of Anna Maria Island.
In 8-10 division action Jan. 11, Beach Bums edged Heidi Johnston ReMax 16-12, Barke & Co. slipped past Eason Builders by a 27-20 score, LaPensee Plumbing defeated Tyler’s Ice Cream 21-12 and, in the game of the week, Miller Electric edged AMI Vacation Rentals 34-26. Jackson Cruz and Gregory Jordan each scored a pair of touchdowns and a 2-point conversion for Miller, while Tyler Kosmider added one touchdown in the victory.
AMI Vacation Rentals was led in the loss by Brett Balais, Langdon Bell, Matt Spiedel and Gabriel Hoover.
Air & Energy defeated Truly Nolan 13-0, West Coast Air Conditioning rolled past Progressive Cabinetry by a 21-6 score, The Feast devoured Tyler’s Ice Cream 32-12 and Sugar Beach Digital cruised past Signarama 36-6 in 11-13 division action Jan. 12.
Team Snyder edged Team Cuva 19-14 and Team Mannino rolled LPAC 31-12 during 14-17 action on Jan. 15.
Games are played at the center field, 407 Magnolia Ave., Anna Maria.
Horseshoe news
Two teams emerged from pool play and met in the finals during Jan. 13 horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits. The team of Norm Good and Adin Shank edged Bob Palmer and Neil Hennessey by a 22-15 score to earn a trip to the winner’s circle.
Four teams advanced to the knockout stage during Jan. 16 action. Dom Livedoti and Sam Samuels rolled to a 22-4 victory over Adin Shank and Bill Wright, while Bob Palmer and Gene Bobeldyk cruised to a 21-7 victory over Bob Lee and Roger Nigg. Palmer and Bobeldyk stayed hot in the finals with an easy 21-8 victory over Livedoti and Samuels.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. followed by random team selection. There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.
Key Royale golf news
The men got the week started at the Key Royale Club with a pair of golf matches Jan. 11. The action started in the morning with a nine-hole, individual-low-net match. Don LaTorre’s 2-under-par 30 was the round of the day and gave him clubhouse bragging rights. Dave Kruger and Dennis Schavey were both a stroke back in a tie for second place. Bob Dickinson and Bill Shuman tied for third at even-par with matching 32s.
Later in the day, the men were back on the course for a nine-hole, modified-Stableford System match. Frankie Purritano carded a plus-7 for the best individual score, two points ahead of second-place finisher Dave Richardson.
Dean Christenson, Lex Halakan and Jack Lowry won the team competition with a score of plus-7.
The women took a turn on the course Jan. 12 for a nine-hole, individual-low-net golf match with a side game of lowest putts for the round.
Debbie Wohlers rode a pair of birdies to a 5-under-par 27, which was the low round of the day and gave her first place in Flight A. Phyllis Roe was alone in second place with a 1-under-par 31.
Liz Lang’s 2-under-par 30 gave her first place in Flight B by one stroke over second-place finisher Meredith Slavin.
Carol Duncan and Sue Wheeler both carded even-par 32s to finish in a tie for first place in Flight C. Sara Falk, Fran Barford and Terry Westby all finished with matching 1-over-par 33 in a tie for second place.
Markie Ksiazek, Marcia O’Brien and Jane Perkins finished in a three-way tie for first place in Flight D with matching 1-over-par 33s. Willa Barkley and Gloria LaTorre were both two shots back in a tie for second place.
Wohlers, Phyllis Roe and Ann Hitchen each recorded 14 putts to tie for first place in the game of the day.
The men were back on the course Jan. 14 for a nine-hole team scramble. The team of Art McMillan, Mike Pritchett, Dave Richardson and John Purcell combined on a 5-under-par 27 to take first place. The team of Pat Moyna, Gary Risner, Larry Solberg and Quentin Talbert were one shot back in second place.
