Youth soccer kicks off at the center, Magic sets tryouts
The kids kicked off their spring soccer season at The Center of Anna Maria Island with games in four age divisions.
The season will see games on weeknights throughout May, with playoffs starting the first week of June.
The action got started for the 6-7-year-olds April 25, when Signarama defeated Progressive Energy 4-1 and Truly Nolen rolled past Pink & Navy on a 5-2 score.
The 8-10 division got underway April 25 with Wash Family Construction defeating Damato 5-2 behind a hat trick from Riley Lawson.
April 26 action saw The Feast roll to a 7-0 victory over Lux Golf Carts and Blue Lagoon and Damato battled to a 2-2 tie.
Sugar Beach Digital and Coldwell Banker battled to a 1-1 tie to open the 11-13 division April 26. Sugar Beach Digital was back on the pitch April 27 to hand Beach Bums a 3-0 loss.

Do you have what it takes to take your soccer game to the next level? If your answer is “yes,” you should try out for the area’s competitive soccer club, Manatee Magic.
The Magic fielded eight travel or competitive teams last season, ranging from U15 down to U11, and the club is looking to build on that number.
There is no cost to try out but prospective players are encouraged to register online at mayso.org.
There is some overlap in the age limits for players on high school teams that start play in late August to avoid conflicts with high school soccer.
All levels will try out 6-7:30 p.m. at the G.T. Bray Park soccer fields, 5502 33rd Ave. Drive W., Bradenton:
Tuesday, May 31: Seniors, 2000-2002.
Wednesday, June 1: Juniors, 2002-2006.
Thursday, June 2: Juniors, 2002-2006.
Saturday, June 4: Juniors 10-11:30 a.m.
Saturday, June 4: Seniors 1-2:30 p.m.

Horseshoe news
Two teams managed 3-0 pool-play records during April 27 horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits. The team of Bob Lee and Neil Hennessey earned a 25-20, come-from-behind victory over Dom Livedoti and Bob Rowley. Hennessey’s game-ending double ringer punctuated the victory and gave his team bragging rights for the day.
Tim Sofran and Steve Doyle were the undisputed champs of the April 30 action, as they were the only team to post a 3-0 record during pool-play action.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m., followed by random team selection. There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.
Key Royale golf news
The Key Royale Club men got out on the course for two rounds of golf April 25. The morning saw a low-net-of-partners match over nine holes. The team of Dave Kruger and Jim Lathrop matched the 7-under-par 57 carded by Jim Auch and Chet Hutton to tie for first place. Second place ended in a tie as Jack Roe and Wade LaDue matched the 3-under-par 61 carded by Fred Myer and Tom Bode.
Later in the day, the men were back out for a nine-hole modified-Stableford System match. Herb Claus, John Estok, Tom McDonnell, Ken Rickett and Bob Soos all finished at plus-3 on quota points to finish in a five-way tie for first place.
Estok was part of the top team with Greg Burke, Barry Izzard and Larry Solberg, combining on a plus-7 to win the team competition.
The men were back on the course April 28 for a nine-hole, team scramble. The team of Larry Pippel, Dick Mills, Chuck Patrick and Dan Richardson combined on a 5-under-par 27 to earn clubhouse bragging rights for the day.
Tee up for summer baseball
Summer baseball will begin June 13, with playoff games planned for July 11-16.
Evaluations for team members will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 7, for ages 5-7; 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 8, for ages 8-10; and 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 9, for ages 11-13.
Coach and player clinics will be conducted at the center by the Manatee High School baseball team and coach Rob Viera June 8, June 15 and June 22.
The cost for summer baseball is $5 for members and $90 for non-members. Games will be held Monday-Wednesday and some Friday nights at the center, 407 Magnolia Ave., Anna Maria.
