Jackson shoots past Calvary in adult basketball final
Going into the championship game between No. 1 seed Team Jackson and No. 2 Team Calvary, the prevailing thought was to beat Team Jackson, limiting Antwan Jackson’s scoring was essential.
As it turned out, Jackson scored only 2 points, but Team Jackson rolled to a 100-62 victory over Team Calvary to win the adult league trophy July 12 at the Center of Anna Maria Island.
Team Jackson jumped out to a 48-32 halftime lead behind a 3-point barrage led by John Davis, who hit his first six 3-point attempts. Davis finished with eight 3-pointers on the way to a game-high 26 points. Brandon Kern contributed to the 3-point run with four of his own and 23 points. Matthew Smith dominated down low and finished with 25 points, while Teagon Purtill scored 14 points and Tanoan Alexandrea added 10 points to complete the rout.
Pedro Vega scored 23 points to lead Team Calvary, which also received 18 points from Reggie Clemmons and 11 points from James Friedman in the loss.
Finals set for ‘Ace’ Cup
Semifinal action July 14 in the adult soccer league at the center saw a pair of blowout games, but the match is set for the Paul “Ace” Hayward Championship Cup.
The first game saw a red-hot Eason Builders Group roll to a 7-3 victory over No. 1 seed Slim’s Place behind 4 goals and an assist from Anthony Barberio and 3 goals from Nate Talucci. Scott Eason and Scott Dean each added an assist in the victory, while goalie Scott Rudacille finished with 10 saves.
Matt Kretzman scored 2 goals and Zach Shield added 1 goal for Slim’s Place, which also received an assist from PJ Smarjisso and nine saves from goalie Will Case in the loss.
The second semifinal match saw Wash Family Construction demolish Moss Builders by a 7-3 score. Sean Flynn and Kyle Lessig both had 2 goals and an assist to lead WFC, which also received goals from Andre Lewis, Murat Oelfke and James Clifford in the victory.
Ray Gardner scored 3 goals and Josh Sato added an assist to lead Moss Builders in the loss.
The “Ace” Championship game is set for 7 p.m. Thursday, July 21.
Key Royale golf news
The Key Royale Club men got out for a round of golf July 11, playing a modified-Stableford System-match with Sean Purcell earning clubhouse bragging rights on a plus-6, two points ahead of Mark Kimball.
The women played a nine-hole individual low-net golf match July 12 with a side game of low gross for even numbered holes.
Lori Waggoner and Penny Williams matched 5-under-par 27 to tie for first place in Flight A. Waggoner took the top spot in the side game with a 16.
Flight B also produced a tie for first place between Terry Westby, Debbie Richardson and Jana Samuels — all matching 3-under-par 29. Samuels won low gross on even holes with a 16. Phyllis Roe birdied the sixth hole.
The men were back on the course in Holmes Beach July 14 for a nine-hole scramble. The team of Dick Mills, Dave Richardson, Dennis Schavey and Quentin Talbert combined on a 5-under-par 27 to grab first place.
Horseshoe news
Horseshoe action last week at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits produced two outright winners. The team of Tim Sofran and Neil Hennessey posted the only 3-0 pool play record July 13, while Hennessey earned the distinction during July 16 action.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. followed by random team selection. There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.
Register now for fall MAYSO
Registration is open for the 2016 MAYSO fall recreational soccer season.
The cost per player, $120, includes a jersey, shorts and socks to go along with a 10-game season on the pitch at G.T. Bray Park in Bradenton.
Players who register online at www.mayso.org before July 31 will receive a $15 discount.
The last day to register is Aug. 20, which also is the only in-person registration opportunity. It will be held at Dick’s Sporting Goods, 4108 14th St. W., Bradenton, along with coupon day for MAYSO at Dick’s.
