Tight scores, close games highlight week 4 of flag football
Week 4 in adult flag football at the Center of Anna Maria Island produced some tight scores, including a first vs. last place match up Sept. 15 between Mason Martin and Blake Medical Center.
Mason Martin held on for the victory to improve to 4-0 on the season, a game up on Beach House Realty and Progressive Cabinetry. Moss Builders and Tyler’s Ice Cream follow with 2-2 records, while Coldwell Banker and Anna Maria CrossFit hold down sixth and seventh place with 1-3 records. Blake Medical Center is still in search of a victory.
The action got started Sept. 15 with Beach House Realty rolling to a 25-7 victory over Anna Maria CrossFit behind quarterback Don Purvis, who passed for 170 yards and three touchdown passes. Purvis ran for 50 yards and a touchdown for Beach House, which also received a strong all-around game from Jon Moss. Moss threw for 35 yards and ran for 40 yards, while adding 55 receiving yards, five flag pulls and a quarterback sack on defense. Jesse Griffin made two touchdown grabs and Leah Purvis added a 5-yard touchdown reception to complete the Beach House scoring.
Quarterback Danny Murphy paced CrossFit with 180 passing yards and a 10-yard touchdown run. Alan Conley, Sean Flynn and Sean McCarthy all finished with 60 receiving yards, while Clay Spangler completed the scoring with an extra-point catch.
Progressive Cabinetry rolled to a 25-13 victory over Coldwell Banker behind a strong all-around game from Pat Calvary, who ran for 45 yards and a touchdown while adding a pair of receiving touchdowns and an extra point to go along with a team-high four flag pulls and an interception on defense. Quarterback Tim Shaughnessy threw for 155 yards and three touchdown passes, while adding 50 combined rushing and receiving yards. Caleb Roberts also had a strong game, finishing with 130 receiving yards and a pair of touchdown catches.
Chuck Buky passed for 285 yards and two touchdown passes to lead the Coldwell Banker offense, which also received 90 receiving yards from Matthew Morgan. Taryn Morgan added 55 receiving yards and a touchdown, while Robert Kaston finished with a touchdown and an extra point to complete the Coldwell Banker scoring in the loss.
Tyler’s Ice Cream edged Moss Builders 14-13 to move into a tie for fourth place in the third game of the evening. Jason Sato passed for 140 yards and a touchdown pass. Lexi Sato had a touchdown reception and an extra point to go along with 35 receiving yards and Josh Sato completed the offensive scoring with an extra point. Josh Sato led the defense with a game-high four flag pulls and an interception return for a touchdown.
Moss Builders was led by quarterback Ryan Moss who passed for 200 yards and a touchdown on offense while adding an interception return for a touchdown on defense. Andrew Terman added 130 receiving yards, 40 rushing yards and a touchdown to go with his team-high five flag pulls on defense. Mike Gillum completed the scoring with an extra point and 55 receiving yards.
Mason Martin slipped past Blake Medical Center 20-18 to remain unbeaten in the standings. Quarterback Ray Gardner needed only eight pass completions to throw for 225 yards and two touchdown passes to lead Mason Martin, which also received 70 rushing yards, 45 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns and an extra point from Tyler Lancaster. Frank Agnelli finished with 110 receiving yards and a touchdown to go with a pair of extra-point passes to complete the scoring in the victory.
Chase Bennion passed for 180 yards and a pair of touchdown passes while adding 80 receiving yards and a touchdown to lead Blake Medical Center in the loss. Aaron VanHook also had a strong game, passing for 65 yards, adding a touchdown and 120 receiving yards. Tom Hall and Chris McCorkle both had touchdown receptions to complete the Blake scoring.
Basketball action continues in center gym
Sugar Beach Digital locked up the top seed and improved to 6-0 on the season in the past week’s action at the center. They were set to take on fourth-seed Salty Printing Sept. 20 — after press time — in the first playoff game. Harry’s Grill is second seed at 4-2 and will face off in the second game of the day against third-seed Waterfront Restaurant.
Sugar Beach Digital nailed down its top seed Sept. 13 by defeating Harry’s Grill 10-6 in the last regular-season game. Jack Proctor led Sugar Beach with 10 points in the victory. Kenneth Neiring paced Harry’s Grill with 4 points, while Anthony Nguyen finished with 2 points in the loss.
Waterfront Restaurant rolled to a 10-2 victory over Salty Printing in the second game of the night. Nick Yatros scored 6 points and Jayden Sparks added 4 points in the victory. Kieran Cloutier led Salty Printing with 2 points in the loss.
Key Royale golf news
The Key Royale Club men played a nine-hole, modified-Stableford System or quota-points match Sept. 12. Dave Richardson lapped the field with a plus-5 to earn clubhouse bragging rights for the day.
The men were back on the course Sept. 15 for a nine-hole, team-scramble. The team of Art McMillan, Tom Nelson and Richardson combined on a 5-under-par 27 to earn first place.
Horseshoe news
Dom Livedoti was the big winner during last week’s horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits. Livedoti walked his way to the winner’s circle on Sept. 14 after posting the lone 3-0 record during pool play.
Livedoti then teamed up with Hank Huyghe Sept. 17 for the only 3-0 pool-play record to become the day’s outright championship.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. followed by random team selection. There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.
Cornhole players compete in Holmes Beach
League play continues for cornhole players at the Ugly Grouper, 5704 Marina Drive, Holmes Beach, with games played every Tuesday night.
Week 3 action saw General Store earn a 2-0 victory over Island Coffee Haus, Captain Morgan Charters also took out Island Coffee Haus on a 2-0 score. AMI Car Wash was victorious over the Feast, the Duck and the Corn by 2-0 scores. Toss Me Softly beat Coffee Haus 2-0, while Amateur Corn Stars rolled past Tag em and Bag em 2-0. Corn Dawgs #2 defeated Island Bazaar-Beach Bums 2-0 and Def Con 5 took out Corn Dawgs by a 2-1 score.
After three weeks of action, Captain Morgan Charters, AMI Car Wash and Amateur Corn Stars sport 3-0 records and are tied for first place. Toss Me Softly follows at 2-0.
The league is accepting teams of two players along with an option for subs or free agents.
The competition will result in a league trophy and a first-place prize of $300 Grouper Bucks. Second place also earns a trophy and $200 in Grouper Bucks, while the prize for third place is a trophy and $100 in Grouper Bucks.
