The Center of Anna Maria Island planned to reopen July 13 with weekday hours of 7 a.m.-7 p.m. and Saturday hours of 7 a.m.-2 p.m.
The center, 407 Magnolia Ave., Anna Maria, closed for much of the spring due to the coronavirus pandemic, reopened in late May and closed again June 25 after a staff member tested positive for COVID-19.
The center July 9 announced plans to reopen July 13, after press time for The Islander.
In an emailed announcement, the center said staff and guests would adhere to Anna Maria’s order mandating the wearing of face masks in certain situations.
The order states, “Every person working, living, visiting or doing business in the city of Anna Maria shall wear a face covering in any indoor location, other than their home or residence, when not maintaining social distancing from other persons.”
Facial coverings are not required for children under the age of 2 and people with certain health conditions do not need to wear masks.
The center, in its statement, said its members and guests “need to wear a mask when entering the building and leaving the building” but once in a class, fitness area or on a game court “where you can safely social distance, you can remove your mask.”
Anna Maria Mayor Dan Murphy, in an email to The Islander July 10, said he amended the city’s face mask order to include an exception for some indoor fitness activity and the center policy complies with the city mandate.
Murphy said the amendment was not discussed with city commissioners, who previously had authorized him to evaluate, adjust and extend the order.
The center also said everyone who enters the facility would be subject to temperature checks and instructed to stay at least 6 feet “from others whenever possible.”
People who are “feeling sick or vulnerable to illness” should stay home.
With the reopening, the center reinstituted fitness classes and summer youth camps.
Also, there are fitness hours — 2-4 p.m. — for members over 59 years old.
Those enrolled in fitness classes must bring their own towel, mat and water.
