The youth flag football league at the Center of Anna Maria Island has tackled its fifth week.
It appears from the standings that Moss Builders in the 8-10 division and Root Logix in the 11-13 division are top of the class.
The rest of the 8-10 division standings have Cloud Pest Control in second at 3-2 record, closely followed by Tidy MD at 2-1-1. Beach Bums and Coastline Contractors are tied for fourth with 2-2 records, while Rays Ramblings at 1-4 and Shady Lady at 0-3-1 complete the roster.
Poppo’s Taqueria might argue that Root Logix has the 11-13 division sewn up, as they are right on their heels with a 3-1-1 record. Detweiler’s Gas holds down third place at 2-1-1, while Ugly Grouper follows at 2-2. Gulf Drive Cafe at 2-3, The Gitt Team at 1-3 and 0-4 HSH Designs complete the 11-13 division standings.
The standings in the three-team 14-17 division are tight, with Ugly Grouper and Grooms Auto tied at the top with 3-2 records and LaPensee Plumbing at 2-4.
Action on the field in the 11-13 division Feb. 16 saw The Gitt Team earn its first victory of the season when they slipped past Detweiler’s Gas 14-9. Quarterback Tommy Baugher connected with Landon Snyder for one touchdown while Jesse Baker ran for the other TD. Julie Baugher completed the scoring for The Gitt Team with a 2-point conversion.
Victor Albrecht connected with sister Angelina for Detweiler’s lone TD. Emma Raulerson had a flag pull for a safety and Bella Roadman added an extra point in the loss.
The second game of the evening saw Ugly Grouper cruise past Poppo’s Taqueria 21-6 behind two passing touchdowns from Ashton Hovda to brother Peyton. Aidan Gannon added a pick-six and Chase Signor chipped in with a 2-point conversion and an extra point in the victory.
TJ Eckert connected with Colton Shook for the lone TD for Poppo’s in the loss.
The third game of the night saw Gulf Drive Cafe slip past HSH Designs by a 30-26 score behind three TD passes and a touchdown run from TJ Logan. Audery Guess had a touchdown rushing and receiving and Jack McCarthy added a receiving touchdown to the win.
Brennen Gunter threw for a pair of TDs and had a receiving touchdown, while Matthew Hennessy threw for a score, ran for a score and added two receiving TDs in the loss.
Action in the 8-10 division Feb. 16 started with Moss Builders demolishing Beach Bums 33-6 behind Mason Moss, who threw for three TDs and added a rushing TD and a 2-point conversion. Matthew Winsor had two TD catches and Austin Guess finished with a score, while Turner Worth chipped in a rushing TD.
Brandon Sato connected with Duncan Cloutier for a TD and a 2-point conversion to lead Beach Bums in the loss.
Tidy MD and Shady Lady battled to a 6-6 tie in the second 8-10 division matchup. Ronan Robertson connected with Hayden Eurice to account for Tidy MD’s score, while Cayson Travis hit Jackson Kennedy for a TD for Shady Lady.
The last 8-10 division game of the night saw Cloud Pest Control earn a 13-0 shutout over Ray’s Ramblings. Charlie Neri hit Noah Rigney for a touchdown and Leo Foster ran one in for another. Luke Foster completed the scoring with an extra-point catch.
Adult soccer action
The standings are tight in the adult soccer league at the center. Four of the eight teams in the league have three victories, headlined by Burton Brick & Tile and Sato Real Estate with matching 3-0-2 records. Allied is right on their heels with a 3-1-1, followed by fourth-place Servis First Bank at 3-2. Blalock Walters at 2-3 holds down fifth place, just ahead of Jiffy Lube at 1-3-1. The Gitt Team at 1-4 and 0-3-2 Slim’s Place complete the standings.
Action last week kicked off at the center field Feb. 17 with Sato cruising past Slim’s 4-1. Will Kretzman scored two goals to lead Sato, which also received a goal each from Race Arande and David Noval.
Hyun Kim scored the lone goal for Slim’s Place, which received 11 saves from goalie Mark Long.
The second match of the night saw Servis First Bank outscore Jiffy Lube 7-5 behind hat tricks from Ugur Durmaz and Johnny Perusi.
Jiffy Lube received a goal each from Danny Anderson, Hunter West, Sean Flynn, Tim Holly and Shana Weldon in the loss.
Burton Brick & Tile edged Blalock Walters 2-1 behind a goal each from Omar Polar and Sumiko Chipman. Jonathan Aragon, Chris Klotz and Kris Yavalar combined on 16 saves to help preserve the victory.
Nate Welch scored the lone goal for Blalock Walters, which received 16 saves from goalie Kevin Mulcahy in the loss.
The last match of the night saw Allied cruise to a 5-2 victory over The Gitt Team behind three goals from Zach Reda and two goals from Cody Wright.
Jessica Williams and Jamie Hutchinson scored a goal each to lead The Gitt Team in the loss.
Flag football continues
Beach Bums and Ugly Grouper continue to hold onto the top spot in the standings in the center’s adult football league with matching 5-0 records and it’s looking more and more like a two-horse race for the title.
Solid Rock Construction and Moss Builders follow with 3-2 records with Slim’s Pace is a game back at 2-3. Mi-Box and Sandbar Restaurant are 1-4, while Salty Printing is still in search of a victory at 0-5.
Action Feb. 18 saw Moss Builders edge Slim’s Place 26-14 in the first game, while the second game of the evening saw Beach Bums outscore Salty Printing by a 52-38 score.
The third game of the night was a tight one, as Ugly Grouper slipped past Solid Rock Construction by a 26-24 score. The night’s last game was another close one as Mi-Box edged Sandbar Restaurant 39-33.
Horseshoe news
Horseshoe action last week at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits was dominated by the walkers.
The Feb. 17 games saw two teams advance to the knockout stage to battle for the day’s title. In the final, Steve Doyle walked his way to a 21-17 victory over Jerry Disbrow and Bob Lee.
The Feb. 20 games saw four teams advance to the playoffs with 3-0 records in pool play.
The first semifinal match saw Bob Palmer take out Bob Heiger and Bob Lee 22-4 in a battle of the Bobs. The second semifinal match saw Del Reese and Adin Shank advance with a 21-11 win over Disbrow and Tim Sofran.
In the finals, Bob Palmer fell behind 9-0 before going on a 21-3 scoring run to earn a 21-12 come-from-behind victory over Reese and Shank to earn the day’s bragging rights.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. followed by random team selection.
There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.
Key Royale news
There was a full week of action on the links at the Key Royale Club in Holmes Beach, starting with the men’s Feb. 15 modified Stableford match. Gary Alvord took the top spot with a plus-4, a point better than Brian Comer, Nelson Eagle, Jim Hichen and Ron Hulbers, who all finished at plus-3.
Hitchen was part of the team that included Dean Christensen, Jon Holcomb and Bill MacMillan, which took the team title with a score of plus-3.
The women took to the course Feb. 16 for a nine-hole, individual low-net match in three flights.
Flight A saw Jenny Hulbers and Marcia Friessen finish in a tie for first place with matching 1-under-par 31s. The trio of Helen Pollock, Roxanne Koche and Jana Samuels each finished at even-par 32 to tie for second place.
Fran Barford and Kay Neal both carded 3-under-par 29s to finish in a tie for first in Flight B. Mary Lou Dreier was alone in second with a 2-under-par 30, while Pam Alvord and Sue Christenson tied for third at 1-over-par 33.
Lisa Edmonds and Jane Perkins fired matching 3-under-par 29s to share first place in Flight C. Terry Westby held down second with an even-par 32, while Marilyn Niewijk and Sally York were another shot back in third place.
Center registers youth soccer players
The center is registering players for its 2021 spring youth soccer season, offering instruction-only programs for ages 3-5 and 6-7 years in a format with no teams, scores or standings.
The 8-10, 11-13 and 14-17 divisions play competitive soccer, leading to playoffs and championship matches.
All games are held at the center pitch.
Cost to register a child is $10 for members, and $126 for nonmembers with the last date to register is March 29.
Player evaluations will start at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, for the 8-10 division, while the 11-13 and 14-17 division evaluations will begin at 7:30 p.m.
The season will kick off April 6 with Spirit Day and the games begin April 13. Games will be played Tuesdays starting at 6 p.m. and Wednesday nights if needed.
