Somewhat slow in reporting but no less stellar, on Nov. 19, the links at the Key Royale Club earned another ace when Mike Riddick hit a hole-in-one on the eighth hole at the club. Riddick used a 9 iron to ace the 136-yard hole — his first ever.
Congratulations, Mike.
The weekly action on the par 32 nine-hole private course in Holmes Beach got started Dec. 15 with the men’s weekly modified-Stableford system match. Larry Pippel lapped the field, carding a plus-6 to give him a 3-point victory over Doug Kristensen and Ken Nagengast, who finished in a tie for second at plus-3.
The women played a nine-hole individual-low-net match Dec. 16. Mary Wilke fired a 1-under-par 31 to earn clubhouse bragging rights. Jan Turner was alone in second with an even-par 32, while Jana Samuels finished in third with a 2-over-par 34.
Members played a scramble/shamble combo on a course modified to a par 46 on Dec. 18 to close out the week of organized golf.
The team of Joe Coyne, Larry Davis, Greg Shorten and Warren Stevens combined on a 3-under-par 43 to grab first place. The team of Nicholas Cibel, Scott Mitchell, Tom Nelson and Jana Samuels was a stroke back in second.
Horseshoe action
Before horseshoe play on Dec. 17, Jay Disbrow, on behalf of the AMI Pitchers, presented $800 to Tricia O’Brien from Meals on Wheels Plus of Manatee County, carrying on a longstanding tradition by the group of charitable donations.
Then Bob Hawks made quick work of the competition, posting the only 3-0 record in pool play.
The Dec. 20 games saw Tom Farrington post the only undefeated record in pool play to win the day’s proceedings.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays at the Anna Maria City Hall pits, where everyone is welcome to play.
Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m., followed by random team selection.
