With the official start to sea turtle nesting season just weeks away, Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch invites people to support the Suzi L. Fox Adopt a Nest Program.
Named in memory of Suzi L. Fox, the longtime director of AMITW who died in 2022, the program gives turtle lovers a tangible way to support local environmental efforts.
For a tax-deductible donation of $149, adopters receive a certificate of adoption and a wooden plaque that announces the adoption at a nest on the beach.
Nesting season officially opens May 1 and runs through Oct. 31. So now is the time to get an adoption in the queue.
The program also offers a “Special Request” option for $199 — an upgrade for visitors who want their plaque on the beach during a specific trip, or who’d like it placed near a particular stretch of coastline.

In other news, AMITW will hold a nesting season workshop at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 15, at Holmes Beach City Hall, 5801 Marina Drive, as well as Suzi Fox Day 3-6 p.m. Friday, May 1, at the Coquina Beach Cafe in Bradenton Beach.
At the Turtle Season Workshop, AMITW will cover nesting season basics, safe-lighting tips and good beach habits.
Residents, businesses and visitors are all welcome.
At Suzi Fox Day, property owners can pick up free wildlife-friendly PAR20 amber LED bulbs and educational materials, including tips on how to maintain a sea turtle-friendly beach, as well as a complimentary beer from Coquina Beach Cafe with the outreach material pickup.
The event also features turtle-themed games and activities for families and music by Scott Blume and Bill Vinhage.
