There’s no doubt from the squeals, applause and smiles that the Lester Holiday Fun Day at the Anna Maria Island Community Center Dec. 4 was a hit.
The kids were squealing, the audience applauded and everyone smiled and shared greetings of “Merry Christmas” as they enjoyed some faux snow, a variety of crafts, a bounce house, a ballet performance, karate demonstration and, of course, a visit from the jolly elf himself, Santa Claus, who was delivered by fire truck to the surprise of many.
The line to visit Santa, and to share a secret wish for a special Christmas gift or two, or 10, was long, but folks visited in line and children ran wild inside the Center gym. Everyone was quite satisfied by burgers prepared by the Duffy’s Tavern folks, as well as hot dogs and drinks at old-fashioned prices — $1 each.
Members of the Anna Maria Island Privateers brought along cheer and shared some beads. And some lucky folks went home with turkeys, having taken chances for the prize foul.
The only thing missing for a truly fun day? Chuck and Joey Lester, who conceived the event years ago, not for a benefit, but for pure family fun at their favorite time of the year, Christmas. Their travel plans from Wisconsin were delayed and they sent along regrets. They were missed by all who enjoy the twinkle and wink they provide, much like Santa.
