Manatee County was to begin work to remove the foundation of a demolished pier at the Manatee Public Beach Feb. 14, as The Islander went to press.
Much of the pier was demolished last winter, with removal going down 2 feet below the surface.
The foundation was left, and now must be removed because strong waves are breaking away concrete, causing debris to wash ashore.
“It’s a health and safety issue,” said Tom Yarger, county construction services division manager.
The work will continue until April 1.
