Playoff matchups set for youth football
There were no major changes in the standings that determine playoff matchups for the Anna Maria Island Community Center NFL Flag Football League following the final week of the regular season.
The Beach Bums Seahawks look to be the team to beat in the 8-9 division, especially with a bye into the finals. The 10-12 division is complicated by two “conferences” and 10 teams vying for the title, including undefeated Walter & Associates Steelers in the AFC division and NFC division-winner Ross Built Vikings.
The 13-16 division appears to have the ingredients for a mild upset as second-place Barrett, Vita, Vining & Herman Group Raiders come into the playoffs on a hot streak, having just annihilated the first-place Beach Bistro Bears 46-0 Feb. 28. Speaking of the Bears, including the thrashing at the hands of the Raiders and its 23-20 loss to First American Bank Bills March 2, the Bears loss in consecutive season-ending games doesn’t bode well for the playoffs.
The playoffs get started March 21 and the games promise to deliver a ton of flag football action.
The Bills 23-20 victory is The Islander game of the week. Though it wasn’t a pretty victory, it was a good win as it evened the Bills’ record at 6-6 behind a defense that intercepted four passes, including one each by Garrison Clark and Destin Sparkman that they both “took to the house” for touchdowns. Pierce Hogan and Jack Shinn each added interceptions in the victory. Shinn and Hogan also led the team with two flag pulls apiece. Quarterback Shinn also added a touchdown on offense, finishing with 26 rushing yards and 31 passing yards. Jake Parsons completed the scoring with an extra point.
Nick Mello had a huge game for the Bistro Bears in the loss, rushing for 66 yards, including a touchdown and a two-point conversion. Henry Bernet added a touchdown pass to Thomas Pears to round out the Bears offense.
Mello led the defense with an interception return for a touchdown, while Katie Holiday finished with a game-high five flag pulls, including a pair of quarterback sacks.
Key Royale golf news
Jean Holmes outlasted Penny Williams to win the Key Royale Club women’s match-play championship March 4. Holmes and Williams battled it out until the 17th hole, giving Holmes a 2-and-1 victory in the tournament, which started Feb. 1 with 19 challengers.
The women and men of the Key Royale Club played a nine-hole mixed scramble March 4 as well. The team of Mary Kaiser, Tom Warda and Al Guy carded a 12-under-par 20 to take first place. Terry Westby, Sue Martin, Ed Holba and Fred Meyer matched the 11-under-par carded by Joy Nellis, Lynn Daily, Ed Daily and Tony Niewyk to finish in a tie for second place.
The men played a best-ball-of-foursome match March 2 that saw three teams tie for first place. The team of Ron Robinson, Dennis Shavey, Fred Meyer and Charlie Knopp matched the 46 carded by Pieter Thomassen, Dave Kruger, Jim MacVicar and Jim Krumme, and the team of John Sagert, Vince Fanton and Bob Landgren — so nobody was on the hook for drinks in the clubhouse that day.
The women took the course March 1 for a nine-hole, low-net-in-flight game. Flight A saw Lynn Dailey and Sandy Dahl card matching 1-under 31s to finish in a tie for first place. Pam Alvord was two shots back in second place.
Joyce Brown torched the course with a 7-under-par 25 to take first place in Flight B by three shots over second-place finisher Kris Landkammer.
Donna Soos’ 3-under-par 28 was good enough for first place in Flight C. Sue Little was alone in second place, while a trio of players tied for third at 1-under-par 31.
Eunice Warda carded a 6-under-par 26 to edge Jane Winegarden by one shot in Flight D.
Pat Townsend and Kris Landkammer tied for low putts on the day with 13 apiece, which was helped by Landkammer’s chipin birdie on number six. Soos also birdied six, while Townsend chipped in on number five.
The men played a better-ball-of-partners on Feb. 27 that saw Dick Eichorn and Pete Weir take first place with a 10-under-par 22. John Sagert and Bob Landgren were three shots back in a tie for second place with Web Cutting and Tom Warda.
Horseshoe news
Five teams emerged from pool play during March 5 horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits. Leo Hutton and Bob Lee rolled past Gene Bobeldyke and Fritz ? 22-7. The other first-round match saw Rod Bussey and Tom Florey defeat John Johnson and Adin Shenk 21-16. Hutton and Lee drew the bye into the finals and watched as Crawford-Lansaw eliminated Bussey-Florey 21-6. Crawford and Lansaw then blitzed Hutton and Lee 22-8 in the finals.
Only two teams qualified for the knock-out stage during Mar. 2 horseshoe action. Norm Good and Bob Palmer emerged from a back-and-forth battle to take a 23-18 win in the finals over Rod Bussey and Dom Lvedoti.
Play gets under way at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warm ups begin at 8:45 a.m. followed by random team selection. There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.
