Local golf pro finishes No. 2, youth basketball continues
Timber Creek Golf Club pro Cathy Schmidt finished second in the LPGA Southeast Sectional Championship April 30-May 2 at the Wycliffe Golf and Country Club in Wellington.
Schmidt found herself tied for the lead with five-time LPGA tour-winner Judy Dickenson after shooting a 4-over-par 76 in windy conditions.
Schmidt was in the hunt until some bad luck on a couple of holes on day two that knocked her back into second place. On one hole, her drive rolled into an area marked out of bounds for the tournament. As if that wasn’t bad enough, on another hole Schmidt sprayed a shot that appeared to not be in play. She said later, “I felt ‘Tin Cup’ all over again when I kept having my caddie throw me another ball to try again.”
Turned out her original ball was in play. And had it not been, her tourney would have been over. Schmidt hung in there and kept firing at the flag to eventually finish in second place.
Schmidt is back to her teaching job at Timber Creek on Cortez Road in Bradenton, where she offers a weekly summer camp for junior golfers starting June 13. The camp runs Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to noon for nine weeks. She also offers lessons every weekday.

KRC golf news
The men and women of the Key Royale Club held their fourth-annual “battle of the sexes” May 1. Thirty-six men and women battled to a tie in a match-play event that was followed by a light dinner hosted at the club by Mary Selby and her tourney committee.
The Key Royale women played a nine-hole, individual-low-net game May 3. Jean Holmes captured Flight A with a 3-under-par 29, one shot better than Penny Williams. Selby was alone in third place with an even-par 32.
Sue Little took first place in Flight B with an 8-under-par 24, three shots ahead of Erma McMullen and Markie Ksiazek, who tied for second place.
The Key Royale Club men played an 18-hole, individual-low-net and team-low-net golf game April 30. Dick Eichorn carded a 13-under-par 51 to win the individual game and helped teammates Ed Havlik, Dale Hudson and Earl Ritchie to the team title with a 17-under-par 239.
Center basketball rolls on
Action continues in the Anna Maria Island Community Center Basketball League. Some teams are already establishing themselves at the top of their divisions.
Premier Division for ages 14-17 has LaPensee Plumbing and the Sun sitting atop the standings, each undefeated. Walter & Associates is on top of Division I for ages 12-13 with a 3-0 record with A Paradise Realty and Holy Cow Ice Cream tied for second place with 1-1 records. Ross Built is 2-0 and appears to be the class of Division II for ages 10-11, although Connie’s Landscaping may want to argue the point as it stands only a half game back. There’s no argument about top dog in Division III for ages 8-9 as Cortez Kat Charters has won all its game by double-digit margins.
The schedule is about a third of the way into the season, so teams that are behind need to make their move sooner rather than later.
LaPensee Plumbing rode a 30-point scoring effort from Adam Bujarski to defeat Rotten Ralph’s 43-31 in Premier Division action May 2. Ryan Gillman added 5 points, while JT Goode and Pearce Hogan each finished with 4 points in the victory.
Rotten Ralph’s received 8 points from Daniel Janisch and 7 points from Forrest Schield in the loss. Also scoring for Rotten Ralph’s was Kaitlyn Gibson with 6 points, while Kyle Parsons added 4 points.
Walter & Associates rolled past E Training Solutions 34-19 in Division I action May 2. Nehimiah Goode led all scorers with 21 points while Seth Walter added seven points. Jack Walter finished with four points while Moriah Goode completed the scoring with two points.
Michael Duffman scored 11 points to lead E Training Solutions, which also received 2 points apiece from Ben Connors, Brad Duffman, Mikey Ellsworth and Andrew Zink in the loss.
Sandbar received 4 points each from Ethan Bertrand and Gavin Sentman in a 12-7 victory over Connie’s Landscaping in Division II action May 4. Jean-Paul Russo and Tyler Yavalar completed the Sandbar scoring with 2 points apiece.
Connie’s Landscaping, which was done in by a 1-for-6 shooting performance at the foul line, was led by Leo Rose’s 4 points. Dylan Joseph added 2 points and Brooke Capparelli added 1 point in the loss.
Horseshoe news
Only two teams emerged from pool play during May 7 horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits. Norm Good, who teamed up with John Johnson, and got things going in the right direction for his team when he threw a pair of six packs on the way to a 24-9 victory.
Hank Huyghe and Sam Samuels were the only team to achieve three wins in pool play May 4 and were the day’s outright champions.
Play gets under way at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. followed by random team selection. There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.
