Summer, indoor soccer season come to an end
The Anna Maria Island Community Center’s summer indoor soccer season is over, which to some means summer vacation on AMI is officially over.
Island Dental Spa took the top spot in the 6-9 age division with an impressive 8-1-2 record. Fran Maxon Realty took second place on a 5-4-2 record. Southern Greens dropped two games last week to finish 4-6-1, while Beach Bums notched another win and a tie to finish at 2-8-1 on the season.
Island Dental Spa defeated Fran Maxon Realty 5-3 Aug. 8 to clinch first place on the season. Luke Marvin led the way with five goals. Island Dental received a strong defensive effort from Conal Cassidy (the reporter’s son) and stellar goal-keeping from Charlie Halfacre in the victory.
Fran Maxon bounced back with a 6-0 victory over Southern Greens Aug. 9. Taro de Haan and Daniel Sentman led Maxon with two goals apiece, while Sam Bowers and Emily Sackett notched a goal apiece in the victory.
Beach Bums continued its strong play with a 3-3 tie against Island Dental in the second game of the evening. Tyler Brewer scored all three goals for the Bums, while Dental Spa received a pair of goals from Ryan Joseph and one goal from Charlie Halfacre.
The 10-12 age division had a season-ending tournament, but there were no surprises as Mr. Grout finished the season undefeated and pretty much unchallenged. The Grouts rolled past Sandbar 19-2 in the opening playoff game Aug. 8 before defeating LaPensee Plumbing 16-6 in the finals Aug. 10.
Two goals from Dylan Joseph, along with goals from Michael Latimer, Javiar Salgado and Mychael Depanto gave Mr. Grout a 5-0 lead at just over 10 minutes left to play in the first half.
James Whyte broke the ice for LaPensee Plumbing at the 10:52 mark to make it 5-1. A few uncharacteristically sloppy passes resulted in Stephen Whyte scoring at the 10:02 mark and the 9:10 mark to close to within 5-3. James Whyte then stole the ball and scored with 8:46 left in the half to make the score 5-4 in favor of Mr. Grout. Mr. Grout next received goals from Sydney Cornell and Latimer in the last minute of the half to extend the lead to 7-4 at the break.
Mr. Grout turned it on in the second half, scoring nine more goals to complete an undefeated season with a 16-6 victory. Joseph and Latimer led Mr. Grout with four goals apiece, while Cornell finished with three goals. Salgado added a pair of goals, while Depanto and Ethan Jenkins completed the scoring with one goal apiece.
LaPensee Plumbing was led by Stephen Whyte’s four goals and two goals from brother James in the loss.
The third-place game saw Pink & Navy Boutique roll over the Sandbar by an 11-0 score. Sydney Morrow and Grace Bowers led the way with three goals apiece, while Shelby Morrow and stalwart goalie Emma Monuese scored two goals each. Gillian Cassidy completed the Pink & Navy scoring with one goal.
LaPensee Plumbing edged Pink & Navy in an exciting Aug. 8 playoff game to advance to the finals. A pair of goals by Carlos Cruz and single goals from James Whyte and Robbie Fellowes staked LaPensee Plumbing to a 4-3 halftime lead. Sydney Morrow scored two goals and Brooke McIntosh added one first-half goal.
Ryan Fellowes scored two goals in the second half as LaPensee opened up a 6-3 lead, but Gillian Cassidy scored a pair of goals 30 seconds apart with just under two minutes left in the game to pull to within 6-5, although LaPensee held on for the victory.
Super bowl, toilet bowl on horizon
The Anna Maria Island Community Center’s adult coed NFL flag football league is winding down to the championships. The two best teams will battle it out in the league Super Bowl Aug. 18.
Agnelli Pool & Spa Dolphins continued its impressive offensive display with a 48-22 victory over Island Sun Panthers.
Agnelli’s opponent will be the MartiniVille Saints, which remained undefeated with a 30-15 victory last week over Tyler’s Ice Cream Steelers.
The action will start at 6:30 p.m. Thursday on the community center field when the bottom-ranking teams of Sato Real Estate Browns face Slim’s Place Patriots in the Toilet Bowl. Then, at 7:30 p.m., the battle between the undefeated MartiniVille Saints and the Agnelli Dolphins gets under way.
Key Royale news
The women of the Key Royale Club played a nine-hole, individual-low-net golf match Aug. 9. Fran Barford carded a 5-under-par 27 to take first place by four shots over Sue Wheeler, who birdied the eighth hole to take her to a second-place finish with a 1-under-par 31. Meredith Slavin was alone in third place with a 2-over par 34.
More soccer registration
Manatee Area Youth Soccer Organization is holding registration for its fall recreational soccer season from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 20 and Aug. 27 at the MAYSO clubhouse across from Bradenton’s G.T. Bray Park tennis courts.
Cost is $100 for players in the U6 and U8 divisions, while the U10, U12 and U14 player fee is $125.
